La Liga - 2014/15

You do realise that Xavi has declined due to ageing right and has nothing to do with coaching? Busquets is playing through injury and has been for quite some time so that should perhaps he has not quite been himself for a while. Not everything is Enriques fault. If you win again today (which I think you will) then you will still only be two points behind the leaders Madrid.

We have more than just Xavi and Busquets in the midfield. I'm not expecting creativity from Busi anyway, he's a DM. I'm expecting from the rest, who are a lot.

Pretty average one at that.

Álvaro and especially Eric defending very well all game for Espanyol. Lucas Vázquez and Sergio García in the attacking compartiment did excellent to create the chances they have, but should've finished more than the one.

i'm talking only for what i've seen today, i havent follow him at all

Ah but he has done alright. I've been following him since he left. He did alright for Lokomotiv Moscow and he's playing in the spanish league now, so he can't be as bad as some people at Sporting thought

Suarez might not be scoring much but he's racking up assists.

Yep. Don't think he's settled into his role yet (and I'm not even sure what his role is supposed to be) but he's set up a few nicely. Overall pretty underwhelming, but Barcelona are a hard team to fit into.

World's best midfielder alongside Schweini according to Heynckes.

Surprising quote. Technically he's a decent player, but a defensive midfielder he isn't. In the Barcelona side between 2009-2012 he was largely protected due to the large amounts of possession the team had and the team ethic of closing down and winning the ball back. Since then both he and Pique have been badly exposed. Fact is, he doesn't offer any protection to the back four whatsoever, and it's worrying just how many times the opposition have the freedom of the pitch once they bypass Xavi and co. IMO, he's the most overrated player in the world right now.

He had his best season back in 2010/11 with Levante which "earned" him the move to Lokomotiv, when he scored 13 in 27 league games. Hasn't come close to such numbers since.

Is there one Barca player apart from Messi who hasn't been absolutely useless today? I guess Rakitic has been decent and Pique scored but that's it. People said they were depended on Messi in 08-12. What is this now then?

So with those two goals Messi is now undisputably Spain's all-time highest league goalscorer (some sources have Zarra at 253 league goals instead of 251).

Máximos goleadores de cada una de las 5 grandes ligas:
GER: Müller (365)
ENG: Greaves (357)
FRA: Onnis (299)
ITA: Piola (274)
ESP: MESSI (254)

Oh yeah, you are right. That was the season that made me follow him.

Claudio Bravo and Mascherano have been decent, but hardly tested too. Piqué poor despite the goal, I'd say.

Nice, could pass that within the next three seasons.

If you need a replacement for Mikel, you're free to yank Busi. I will have no complaints for sure.

Yesterday he made me realise just how important Matic is to us. The number of times Newcastle broke through with space to run into was frustrating and Mikel was no where to be seen. Matic would never have given them that kind of room. Mikel's a stroller, just like Busquets. Lots of square passes, not much running, poor positional sense, technically decent.

so messi only needs what? three or four years to surpass Muller?

doable

Poor Espanyol. Unselfish by Pedro and nice finishing by Messi

Messi gets his hattrick to cap off what has been an all-round brilliant performance. He has been excellent tonight.

Why? He's always been a good finisher and has a good goalscoring record all things considered

He was a good finisher. He's been poor for a few seasons straight now. That chance used to be his bread and butter but he usually wastes them now.

I think you're doing a huge disservice to Busquets here... likely coloured in by the typical British view on what a DM is supposed to be or be capable of. As a holding mid his positioning and anticipation was already of the highest level, but it's his technical prowess that made him so highly rated because he was a very important cog in Guardiola's machine. He'll never be as good as Mascherano at the physical stuff, he doesn't have that tenacity or aggressiveness, but he looks more for "intelligent" or constructive solutions. It's clear that in the current system he can't keep up with the physical demands (as Xavi, Iniesta and even Messi have all been affected by as well by the way) under first Martino's and now Lucho's templates where they have to cover more ground.

He's a no. 10 who runs a game and a no. 9 who is deadly in front of goal. Not bad, this Messi lad.
