La Liga - 2014/15

Window shoppers should note: Villareal have just brought Vietto on at half time.

12 league goals in 13 starts

Atletico start with
Moyá; Juanfran, Gimenez, Godín, Siqueira; Tiago, Gabi; Arda, Koke, Fernando Torres y Raúl Garcia.
Vs
Valencia with
Alves; Gayá, Otamendi, Mustafi, Barragán; Enzo Pérez, Javi Fuego, Parejo; Piatti, Feghouli y; Negredo.

Koke back in action.

Potentially crucial game wrt h2h for that automatic CL spot (or more, who knows however unlikely...), Valencia creamed them 3-1 in the first meeting. A 2-0 win to Atléti effectively means 4.5pts breathing distance. They've been very average of late. No Griezmann either (suspension), who's been their stand-out player this season.

What's the issue with Mandžukić, has he fallen out with Simeone just like he fell out with Guardiola? Seems odd for him to be benched with Griezmann banned.

According to Ballague it's indeed something to do with giving him a signal, but there's also speculation about them wanting to get rid and bringing in Cavani instead ... that would be some coup, loads of money involved in that I'd assume.

I believe that's the best Valencia lineup bar Negredo. Not sure whats going on with Mandzukic.

Mandzukic doesn't seem to like competition, first Lewandowski and now Torres.

Simeone didn't' like Mandžukić's attitude in training. He'll need to improve on that or else things will go sour very fast.

Off the top of my head, that was the problem that Pep had with him too. Either that or his attitude during matches, but either would be problematic.

Yeah, I don't really know why they went for him in the summer. Too error prone.

I think he's had a good season to be fair to him. Much better than the more expensive Oblak anyway. He's not at Courtois' level but the errors haven't been that common as far as I can remember.

Honestly, I think he was meant to be a backup keeper for Oblak. In that sense, he was a good transfer.

Yep, I'd be surprised if that wasn't the plan, guess Oblak being abysmal ruined it. Ideally, Atlético should have a better keeper than him but he's doing as well as anyone could have expected.

It's one of his better seasons, true. I just remember him being terrible at Valencia. He redeemed himself at Getafe, but still made the occassional mistake.

If Atletico drop out of the title race the second last game of the season against Barca will turn into a friendly for Atletico. They'll be professional for sure but no way they will play with the same intensity which they would if they had anything to play for. Could be a slight advantage for Barca in the title race.

Top 3 is their target I think. If their 3rd place is secured, Barca might find the away game to be easier.

At Valencia yeah, but at Getafe he transformed into a very solid shot-stopper. In terms of judging and dealing with high balls he's not any worse than most Spanish keepers IMO (which admittedly isn't ideal). Though I agree with Luis García that he wasn't 100% at fault for the goal, was an incredibly well struck effort from Parejo that dipped so fast at the end.

This has also been his best season ever probably, though he was also great last year.

Overall Moya has been great. There is a reason why he's keeping Oblak on the bench. Moya was initially brought as a back up. Oblak is the most expensive keeper in La Liga history and was supposed to be Curtois replacement. Oblak is still young though so he might well be their future no. 1.

Indeed. From what little I've seen of him at Benfica (mainly last season's Europa League) he seemed a fairly decent all-round keeper (compared to Moyá being the more typical modern Spanish shot-stopper reliant on reflexes and agility), so could definitely see why they'd opt for that profile. So far he hasn't exactly impressed in the Copa games he played, rather the opposite, but indeed as you say he's still incredibly young and there's potential.

Mandža's not lucky, first that stuff with Pep, now he is starting from the bench.
You don't think this has anything to do with his own attitude? I mean first Guardiola and now Simeone, 2 managers with completely opposing styles, but both are / were having issues with him it seems ...

Dont think Simeone has issue with him, just the other day he said he's his most important player, cause of the rumours he'll go for Cavani and sell Mandža. I think Mandža just doesnt like to sit on the bench. I think he's just the player Simeone should like and likes.
As for Pep they just didnt like each other, Pep changed the story later, he just didnt see him in his plans and how he got rid of him was horrible too. Just said in the presser Mandža will leave the club.. It seems they didnt like each other.
Maybe there were problems in training but Pep sabotaged Mandža from the start.

Didnt watch the game yesterday, was Mandža nervous or sthing? he's sometimes too eager, doesnt like to see his team loosing or drawing and always gives his 100 percent. :)

I didn't really notice him much after he came on apart from when he got booked. I think once he saw the great reception Torres got (45.000 fans welcoming him) and Torres starting the Madrid derby ahead of him affected his confidence a bit, which it really shouldn't, because if he was at any other top club the competition upfront would even be more intense.
Edit: Did Simeone say he was his most important player? Do you have a link for these quotes? Doesn't seem something he would usually say and no disrespect to Mandzukic, but if he indeed needed to Name his most important player I am sure it would be Godin or Koke. Indeed the German commentator on the stream I was watching the game yesterday said that Simeone didn't like that Mandzukic tried to put himself above the team recently (whatever he meant with it) because for Simoene the team comes before any individual. That's why in his presers he hardly praises individuals but instead focuses on the whole team's Performance.

It's not true that Pep sabotaged him from the start. He started 21 out of 29 games in the first half of the season and came on as a sub in most of the remaining 8 games. Pretty sure he was one of the players with the most playing time in the squad. There weren't any problems at all until the Lewandowkski transfer became official during the winterbreak and Mandzukic starting sulking. It was a shit situation and handled badly by everyone involved from that moment on. I hope, he continues to play successfully at Atletico, I still like him and his attitude on the pitch. He was fantastic for us in our treble winning year.

Of course Croatian media spin it like that, he in fact said he is very important for them :)

Dont know how Mandža tried to put himself above the team. Maybe just one of the rumours. Maybe it seems he's sulking or sthing which would be stupid. He cant play every game but will play most of them.

Maybe not from the start but there were rumours and talk about them not having a good relationship. Pep didnt like him, didnt see him in his plans and Mandža didnt like that.
And you're right, everything from Leva rumours to Pep just saying goodbye to him in the presser was very badly handled. Esp after he was very good for Bayern the previous year as you said.

Guy is an idiot, I'm positive. There are few people I know that met him or know him and they all say the same thing. He can't control his ego and it's surfacing. Just wait for when he gets dropped from the national team first 11 for a big game and we'll get a confirmation on this theory.

As for Pep, he's also an idiot, but while Mandzukic is just a stupid guy with an attitude, the other one is neurotic. That was never going to work out.

Yeah, he had problems with his ego while in Croatian league too. I thought he has dealed with it in Bayern and although its better that ego is still there. :)
He should control it cause his head is the only thing that can ruin his career imo.

I dont know what's happening in Atletico now, there are reports he's sulking or whatever.

I don't know about his attitude and relationship with his coaches off the pitch but on it, he's really committed and works his socks off for the team whenever I manage to catch him playing. Has a good goalscoring record too but never really comes across as being selfish or anything but rather, to the contrary, as a team player.

So I'm really surprised to hear about him allegedly sulking and falling out with Simeone. If anything I expected him to be his cup of tea with his industrious, physical and in your face brash gameplay. Falling out with Guardiola was understandable as he was never going to be his ideal striker and the impending public arrival of Lewa was only going to make the fall out inevitable like Balu stated.

Anyway could you expand on his ego problems in the Croatian league @Mali_Zeus ? Just curious.

I think he awalys thought he's entitled to play every game and was nervous when he didnt play. Nothing special. Thought of himself a big star even when he was just beginning at Zagreb and Dinamo.
I remember seeing him at one presser with his agent acting all 'I'm a big star' and such.
He had problems with Magath at Wolfrsburg too.
I though it was all settled at Bayern but with Pep coming problems occured instantly.

As you said I thought he will feel great at Atletico cause Simeone loves players like him who always run themselves to the ground and give their 100 percent on the pitch. Maybe all this sulking stuff or whatever is just media inventing a story out of nothing. If it isnt so Mandža should just play and not act like a kid. But I'm leaning more to the media blowing the whole thing up story.

Yeah that's most likely the case. Cheers for the reply.

Neither do I, but when a few days after Cholo comes out saying Mandzu is their most important player, you know something's up. :D
Then when you see Cholo leaving him on the bench after that statement, it pretty much says to me "feck of journos, this is staying in house".

Atletico should sigh hernandez. His mentality and price tag will suit them.
