This early timing is just plain wrong.
Barça look incapable of taking advantage of all that space because Suárez' and Pedro's touches are too inconsistent and Messi is letting the game pass him by completely at the moment. Iniesta and especially Xavi doing very well in setting them up, but they can only do so much. Rayo pressing very intensely, so it's likely if/when they start to tire Barça will rack up the goals.

They have 20 outfield players (only 19 before Lucas Silva's arrival). Modric's injured. Khedira's been injured (off and on) for most of the season. James is now injured. Illarra is deemed (just about) good enough to partner Kroos but Illarra/Isco at the heart of the midfield isn't a strong midfield.
They might have got away with it if the front three were playing well, because they still do get chances and Benzema/Ronaldo/Bale do stretch teams around when they're playing well. It's questions like why hasn't he shifted to 442 or done more to take the pressure off Kroos and why hasn't he rotated/dropped Bale and/or Ronaldo that have to come back to Ancelotti.
