Gotta ask, did you watch the Euro 2004 tournament?

Because it sounds a lot like something someone who wasn't watching his performances back then would say. He was the star of the tournament. The most exceptional teenager to play the game. As the question asked, he was already, by that time, far more accomplished than Mbappe in his career, and he was playing against bigger talents.

I watched Euro 2004. Rooney was brilliant. We have no Euros to compare for Mbappé. From the games Mbappé HAS played - we are looking the same level of talent Rooney showed as an 18 year old. Mbappé scored almost 30 goals this season, and no opposition he has faced has proven a step too far for him. I see little reason to think he'd have struggled against the Swiss or Croatian defence of 2004 either. He frightened the crap out of Juventus' defence, as he did against everyone else.

Rooney had yet to have the type of performances Mbappe had in the CL.

When you're playing against a team like France in 2004 and stand out the way he did, it's more than enough.

Mbappe is at the end of the fulcrum of a well-oiled machine, Rooney was the offensive engine of England at the tournament. He already had 1.5 years of top level football on his cv at the time as well.

Lol, why would Mbappe move to PSG now while RM are interested? It's almost a step down, from the Ligue 1 winners.

I'd guess PSG (with the addition of Neymar) are likely to be better than Monaco (without several players) this season.

It could be worthwhile for Monaco, if PSG pay them well to invest for the future.

And if he goes to PSG he could well play for Real Madrid in the future, as he'd reportedly like to. If he goes to Barcelona that's pretty unlikely.

Marca are just breaking a story that Mbappe is signing for PSG for 160m EUR.

Done deal they say.

Would be good to see Real get rejected anyway.

He struggled in Europe at the start. But so did Ronaldo.

Rooney scored that hat-trick on his debut and then didn't do much in Europe until 2007.

That would be 400 million on 2 players if they get Mbappe, FFP is coming down hard on them, no way do they have legit funds for this.

I don't know what to say if this deal happens. Neymar and Mbappe in 1 transfer window, just like that. I still doubt it though. I think Mbappe will wait till after the 2018 WC with regards to making a move.

Buying 2 of the best talents in the world.

No fecking around. Incredible.

Incredible that it's really just Qatar FC? Don't really get people who are somehow impressed by any of this. Should be illegal. Less bothered about him going there than Real though, he'll regret the move.

The incredible part will be justifying it as financial fair play.
Be interesting to see. FFP doesn't look at the books as is, there's plenty of expenses they don't consider and others they count even if they don't go on the books

400 million on two players and PSG have the cheek to say they have the sponsorship and everything in place to succeed FFP?

Absolute joke, there's only so many clubs who can achieve it without oil/Arab money and PSG aren't one of them

I can actually stomach (sort of) €220m for Neymar as he had a release clause, he's probably the 3rd best player in the world, he's proven himself over 4/5 years, he's the face of Brazil with insane marketability etc.
But €200m for Mbappe after 1 good season is absolutely insane!

6 months of playing well and worth this kind of money, be great for Mbappe, it's a win-win he can flop and still be earning £200k a week for 5 years (at least according to reports). Pretty poor planning from PSG though, you really want your players to have to work to earn that money otherwise they could lose their drive.

This is crazy if it happens. Still shocked that the kid would choose PSG over Madrid..

The good thing is that their league is not that competitive so not much pressure there unlike the CL, but still, it's a crazy amount of money for an 18 year old. The money involved in transfers this season just make me feel completely disconnected from football.

Good luck to the kid, I hope he does well and that he has good people around to help him with the extra scrutiny he'll now experience with this huge transfer fee.

Jesus guys. Spare yourself the heartache and stop thinking about FFP

The tl;dr of the status of FFP is: It is good for stopping smaller teams from gambling too much to take the next step (Portsmouth) but it is too limited to stop or limit the transfer activities of financial giants like City/PSG.

I don't think I have ever wanted a football club (including City and Liverpool) to fail as much as I want PSG to. Such a shit club who were founded by Qatar and are now a "toy" for owners with unlimited money.

I hope we never go down this road since we have morals as a football club to develop the best players, not throw 400 million on two players.

I agree with the first part, I absolutely can't stand them their owners are worse than City. However, in the long to actually be able to keep up we may need an investor like this. We'd certainly be absolutely unstoppable with one.

So in the end it came down to who could pay him the most? Smdh

Asking for that much money as an 18 year old kid with 6 months of good form is absolutely embarrassing. Not certain he won't flop massively in the long run.

Surely not? PSG aren't actually going to get him, are they? Fecking hell..

I think it's great if true. La Liga have had it all their own way for far too long.

You know its gone too far when Real are saying "no thanks".
Glad they did. There's got to be some kind of limit. Have a feeling some of the top clubs will be getting together to have a talk about what can be done to put a brake on PSG.
