Koke

Isn't that article saying we went for him in the summer when his release clause was lower? I think he may still be an option for the summer.

The article is also saying the release clause is 60million.

The stories are coming from an article in Marca. Marca say his contract was renegotiated in September, placing the clause at 24m. United made a bid at the clause price (in November/December maybe?) but neither Koke nor the club were ready for a sale.

Instead they renegotiated again, and gave him another new contract "a few weeks ago" - giving him another payrise and setting the clause to €60m.

Which I think pretty much should end our interest in him.

Don't know how to read this one: he obviously didn't want to join United and signed a new deal? He's showing some deference to Atletico and ensuring they get a good pay day when he joins Barca by increasing his release clause? Or he's staying with Atletico?

I dunno...

The same thing happened before Aguero and Torres were sold. They renewed their contract with a higher release clause so the club makes more money.

Aguero let his contract run down and renewed with a lower release clause.

However the general principle is true. Release clauses aren't the normal way to do business in Spain but they are often used by in-demand players as part of contract negotiations. Some young players have clauses and wages that go up as they play more games for example.

Sevilla gave Navas and Negredo new contracts with reasonable release clauses, because the players wanted to know they could leave when the right bid came in. For Sevilla it set a fair price and avoided the players running their contracts down. It's also believed to be what's happening now with Rakitic.

Some players have clauses that start high and go down each year. In effect the player guaranteeing he'll stay for the first year or so in reward for re-signing. But the player still has the release clause argument to get his contract improved if he's doing well a year or so later. Atletico have used contracts like that before - it may be that Koke's another one.

This doesn't bother me much, while Koke is good, i'm not convinced he is good or talented enough. When I watch him I can't help thinking I'm watching a Spanish Cleverley to some degree. I mean the Cleverley when Clev was cooler of course. He seems to be another of those good at a lot of things but not really outstanding at any kind of players to me.

Fancy a bit of chilled koke myself. Did someone mention Cleverley?

He was whizzing around the place against Milan. Class A player

Milan are struggling this season, 10th in Serie A, where-as Simeone has players giving 110% every game, pressing, harassing opponents into making mistakes, then very composed on the ball, some real star performers in that squad too, Koke and Turan will be highly sought after, and Diego Costa will probably be chelsea bound.

He's like the Spanish Cleverley... who can actually pass, shoot, dribble and has bottle to go with it.

The weight and curl on the pass reminds me of Carrick's ball to Chicharito last season against Newcastle. Sublime.

It still amazes me that people thought he would join United, let alone during that January window.

I've heard that Moyes didn't pick him up in January because he was still growing his pinky fingernail. Hopefully it'll be ready the Summer.

At least there will be no soul crushing protracted saga in the summer. Koke would have left some fans in need of rehab after that.

Would love to see the peoples thoughts now who thought he was going to join United

I still believe we have chance, probably not this summer, but if he eventually moves, I hope we are in for him. It's not the most outlandish claim either, just because you don't believe in it or choose to feel miserable about future United targets doesn't mean others need to feel that way too.

I'm actually very positive about some potential targets. However, people thought a young player wanting to go to the World Cup with Spain would leave a title race in Spain, leave Champions League football to play for a United team in transition. I am not miserable about our future targets, I was just realistic about this specific rumour.

Fair enough. That sounds a lot more reasonable than laughing at people, who are just optimistic, maybe unrealistically so, about this rumour.

Apparently has run twice of what Messi did tonight. Great performance by him and his team. Deservedly kicked us out of the CL.
