That's because they're past it (or don't fit in Mata's case) and people won't realise it.
I am not sure they are past it as in still not very good players tbh. They definitely still are but Their qualities have changed and they were never that kind of very fluid players to begin with.
Mainly, They just don't fit as a Combination of 3 especially in this formation unless we can get 2 top wingbacks attacking wise out wide and dominate midfield completely. And to be fair Rooney RVP as a front 2 has not worked under 3 managers in any formation so far barring 1/2 games here and there.
Out of current personnel somehow fitting Januzaj in that roaming role in front 3 or Di Maria pushing closer to there seems our best bet. People say Welbeck and he helps in a way adding pace and workrate but i am not sure he creates anything much himself.
