Box-to-box, he was the key component in transitioning defence into attack and vice versa. It was like;

De Jong
----------- Strootman
Sneijder/VdV

Exactly, and the solidity he offered meant LVG was happy to play a flat back four even though he didn't have great defensive options.

Went back a couple of pages but can't find anything so does anyone know when Stroots is due back playing?

I think it is safe to assume that Strootman is the CM that LvG wants, and he is probably prepared to wait rather than shell out 35-40m on Vidal who is a couple of years older.

With each passing day more likely that's the real deal. We wouldn't be even invested in this whole Vidal farce now if Strootman's health was okay.

LVG already know who he wants but he's probably gonna investigate for few days more who are the weakest links in our team.

How are Roma financially? Some of the other Italian clubs are in the shit but not so much Roma, is that fair to say? Have they been taken over by someone with deep pockets? If so Strootman may be a tough nut to crack.

Earned over €100m on departures last year, out to spend it this year.

Hmm interesting, with a stadium build in the offing nett. profit will be a factor. If we double what they paid for him £18????? the we might get a player three years younger than Vidal for around the same money. Not getting into who is better as I don't have a clue but I do know LVG rates Strootman as good enough to play 433 so I reckon he might break the bank to get him.

Why are people so obsessed with age? who cares if he's 3 years younger than Vidal, the fact is he's nowhere near Vidal's level right now. 27 isn't even old for a footballer. Strootman has some very good qualities too though, very good tackler with a great engine, also very familiar with Van Gaal's system.

End of the day, in an ideal world we sign both of them, but if it came down to one, then Vidal all day every day.

Because box to box all action types can have a shorter shelf life than other players so it should be taken into consideration. I will be overjoyed if we sign either player though no doubt about that.

This is true, but the very best can adapt with age. Schweinsteiger is a good example, he is now what - 30/31(?) and has reverted to more of a defensive, holding #6 utilising his tactical side of the game and good passing abilities. A few years back he was very much, as you say, an 'all action' #8.

But Vidal is 27, that's not old at all. I like Strootman, but I don't think he will ever be on Vidal's level, still a very good player. And I don't see a reason why we can't sign both, our midfield is that poor and we won't sign Strootman before next summer anyway.

We'd need a proper rundown, but you look at guys like Essien, Khedira and Schweinsteiger in recent years and that seems like it might be true, in terms of getting more injury-free production from 23-26 or 27 in that spot than 27-30/31 (assuming Khedira's injury troubles aren't gone forever).

It does make sense that box to box CM would be a demanding as hell position.

I'm no doubt reading too much into it but could this quote today be relating to Strootman in that he won't be available immediately.

"Sometimes you have to take measures that are not good for the short term, but it is better for the long term of the club."

I still think it's very unlikely we'll sign him this window, however. But the quote did make me consider if he was talking about him, or possibly De Jong.

Roma agreed a deal today with PSG for Rabiot according to Di Marzio i think. Could this mean something?

If this is a manageable risk and we can get him at a reduced price possibly then i can totally see this happening.

LVG seems to love him.

I was thinking the same, although there's talk about that Rabot guy being similar to Pjanić on the internet.

They now have in the midfield: De Rossi, Strootman, Ucan, Keita, Nainggolan, Pjanić, Rabiot.
Maybe I forgot someone but that's 7 players, maybe someone is going but I doubt it and even more doubt it we'll get Strootman somehow.

I'd be shocked if went that route before he's fully fit and playing again. Especially after all the talk about Vidal's knee and the Hargreaves story.

I'm convinced we'll get him whether this Summer, in January or next Summer. LVG just adores him.

The only smart option at this point regard Strootman is a season loan with fixed buying price. An outright purchase off the back on an injury would make no sense. We should also be looking at other options.

It's a risk because he's coming off a nasty injury. He might not be the same player prior to the injury.

We will not be able to really move for him until next summer. If Roma are still in the CL there is no way they sell in January and there is no guarantee he would even be fit then.

Not sure where, but i recently heard he was well ahead of his rehab schedule and about to beginning light training.

Think it was an Ogden article, saw some discussion on it in the twitter thread not long ago.
