Surely that's still at least one player too much, if comes Fletcher's time could be up.

Not really. Blind also covers left back, right back and central defence if injuries occur, and AdM covers either wing and the #10 position in the case of injuries.

Depends. I think if we're going to play with three in the middle, six centre midfielders is adequate, in my opinion. Ideally, you'd probably want to have 3 starters and three capable back up players.

"We go again" in the January window according to Miguel Delaney.

It's amazing that these guys that are paid to talk about football for a living don't have the professionalism to actually read up on the players they are talking about. The ignorance as regards Rojo and Blind's positions is reaching epidemic proportions.

Agreed, the idea is always to have two players for each position and of course Di Maria could be moved to the wing if LvG starts using a front 3.

So all papers seem to be carrying the same tune today. Expect more spending in January with Strootman main target depending on how he recovers.

It's absolutely shocking that the common consensus among any English speaking journalist these days seem to just say blind and rojo are left backs! ignoring that they only fill in there and mainly play in other positions.

Agent quashes rumour
Well of course it's all just talk right now, Van gaal himself said they have to see how he recovers from and injury and then they'll decide what to do. Couldn't make it more clear that we'll go for him as long as he's not crocked permanently.

Key player for Van Gaal. Changing whole system because of Strootman's injury is a sign of massive trust and value.

I just can't see Louie not trying to acquire him, especially with the warchest in possession.

He might be a good player, but I'd be pissed off if we get him.

We could have had him last summer for peanuts. Now if we want him he'll cost 30m+ euros and after he's destroyed his knee. I'd rather bring Pogba back if we're going to be paying more silly money. Not that I care about the money, since it's not MY money and we're fecking loaded... but still.

If we do get strootman it must mean lvg sees ADM as a winger more than cm of three in midfield.

Roma landing in a tough CL group is probably good news for us too. Bayern and City should progress.

I'm sure Roma will sell him to us in January regardless of how they fare in Europe. After all, they managed just fine without him after his injury and by the time he's 100% fit to play, Roma's fate in the group stages probably will already be decided.

Their chiefs are not stupid, they know it's a matter of time, especially with some reliable media outlets reporting that he's very keen on the move. They're already planning for life without him, it's quite clear. The good fee they'll receive for him will allow them to sign a quality replacement or just sign Rabiot on a free next summer.

30m is a lot of money for an italian club, they've signed a lot of midfielders this summer (Rabiot in Januray or next summer), they probably know Strootman wants to play for Van Gaal, that Van Gaal hasn't signed another midfielder because he wants Strootman and Roma are building a new stadium = Strootman will come

Add a Strootman and a top proven defender to our side and we'll be pretty unstoppable (on paper).

That's all we need January/next summer really, no need to go all out again.

Yep. In the end of the day, Roma is a selling club - just like every Italian club nowadays. Benatia's move to Bayern proved it once again. If we were in for Vidal for real, we would have got him.

Let's hope Strootman regains his form after he returns from injury, because he'd be perfect in our midfield. Van Gaal would know how to use him properly and he'd be the midfield general we've been lacking for many years since Keane left.

Obviously LVG coming in will have changed things but based on Strootman's performances for Roma last season it's hard to imagine why we weren't in for him at that price. He'll cost us at least twice the price now if we go for him.

I believe a lot will depend on United's performances and standing in the league table around Christmas time. If United improve to the point that a title challenge is looking likely then i would fully expect Woody (my opinion of him has changed ten-fold after this summer) to deliver Strootman and secure the title.

Can't wait for this to happen as it will solidify the value of all our other transfers.

Nah mate, even if it means we get Strootman, I still don't want City to progress. We can always wait a few more months to get Strootman, and properly assess him. I'd prefer it if Bayern and Roma went through.

One of many in the last five years.
I'm not convinced he's top quality.
I am. He's excellent. Just hope the leg break hasn't fecked him.

Not sure we need him anymore seeing we have Blind and Di Maria.

I would choose someone who can play right midfield over him.

................Front 2....................
...AdM...Herrera.....Player....
................Blind.......................
......Back 4.....

Strootman-Blind-Herrera is a fapworthy midfield in fairness. Add in a top quality CB and ship out the chuckle brothers (Young and Valencia), and our squad is set, IMO.

Let City progress so they have more distractions on their mind. They will get taken out by the likes of Real or Barcelona in the semis, they will never win the thing

This season we won't need that much cover in the squad but as it is the midfield options beyond the first eleven are poor. Fellaini and Anderson will move on and if all goes to plan we'd be in Europe next season, so options in midfield will be crucial. No need to force them all into the team. As above, with him signed up our options in a 3 or at the foot of a diamond could be:

Di Maria, Strootman, Herrera, Blind, Carrick, Fletcher.

Good mix of abilities, experience and promise without needing to fit them all into the squad straight away. Any switch to a system with genuine width would probably shift out Di Maria and another of the above would come in. I really like the idea of a diamond and that would really suit Herrera, Strootman and Di Maria.

Probably the first knockout round
