Kevin Strootman

If we sign him, I think that he'll take Blind's place. I really doubt that we'll play Herrera as 10 and then bench one of our No.10 (Mata or Rooney).
yes I can see this - I think long term (one or two seasons) we will see Rojo as primarily a centre back, Shaw as a left back and Strootman or another player in central midfield with Blind on the bench primarily as back up to shaw but with the ability to cover in midfield or cb if needed during a game - the new sort of john o shea

Signing him makes sense in next summer window imo. Right now, we've got just two competitions and I'm not sure if he or Herrera/Blind/di Maria would be happy with being benched given how little games we have to play. Next season though we'll need depth and quality so we'll have to move away from likes of Fletcher or fecking Anderson and be sure that we don't scream 'oh feck' when Herrera gets injured.

Blind is versatile, I don't think he will have problems getting games, and 6 months as backup is hardly a disaster for him. Strootman would most likely take his place, and a midfield three of Strootman, Herrera and Di Maria would be frightening.

I dont know strootman at all, but what you say is contradicting. If Strootman has to play as #6/DM/holding player, he cant roam forward or he ends up out of position (like Khedira). He could only do that if he plays alongside a holding player.

What kind of player is strootman actually? I dont know it, but reading this thread, he seems to be a b2b CM; similar to Herrera but a bit more defensive.

Read it again. I'm saying he'll be the 6, sitting deepest in that 4 man midfield when we're playing weaker teams, but Blind will play as a DM in a 5 man midfield and Strootman will thus have license to get forward.

exactly. I was surprised we did not buy him when it was obvious our midfield needed strengthening.

There was one fella in the Strootman transfer thread who was on a non-stop Crusade that he was rubbish. Not sure who that was, but would be funny to re-read it.

We could've had this guy for about £17m two summers ago, at a time when we spent 27m on Fellaini.

Does this guy look like he's going to take no for an answer?

I'd rather have Khedira at the price he'll go for and I think Sami is better.

I think Strootman has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the world in the next year or two. His fee, although seemingly high compared to what Roma bought him for, will be well worth it.

I really don't get that feeling from watching him.

He could become an important cog in van Gaal's machine, but I'm unsure he'd become one of the best midfielders in the world. Either way I'd really like us to sign him.

Were you following him at Roma Raoul? I have to admit I wasn't convinced when he was at PSV or playing for the Dutch U21 team.

Wouldn't really say he's done enough in his year at Roma that may suggest he'll be one of the best midfielders in the world soon as he certainly didn't look like he'd reach that level from his days at PSV.

Khedira is at the wrong sort of age, and has been picking up a fair few injuries. I'm not much of a fan of Khedira at all, either. Too brainless at times, and is best in a role that lets him run riot, which I don't think we could allow with just Blind as the CM.

Still would go after Vidal in January, but Strootman looks like a solid midfielder and LVG seems to rate him highly.

It was actually €17m so it would've been around £12-14m which would've been a bargain. If we'd of signed him and Herrera instead of Fellaini we'd of managed top 4 imo.

Moyes' tactics would have nullified them both.

Would signal another step towards the squad being title contenders. Add Strootman and another CB and LVG would be close to completing his rebuilding process.

How is 27, not 35. He's not Xavi or Vidal but he's a fantastic player, massively underrated here. He's class and Strootman is definitely not better, not on the back of one decent season anywya and has had a very serious injury, no guarantees that he'll ever be back to his best either.

In fairness Khadera has been fairly injury prone with lots of niggles, although nothing major as far as i remember, Strootman would be a better fit in our system though in my opinion.

Missed most of last season after doing his ACL (same injury as Strootman).

Didn't we and Arsenal show interest in him, but he preferred Roma? Something along those lines?

Only Roma actually put a bid in. So there was not much choosing to do for Strootman. I firmly believe that if we went for him then, we would have gotten him. Roma probably wants around 50million pounds for him, but let's first see if he can get to his old level before his knee injury.

There's a reason he only went for that amount.....cause he was only a good player and not a great one. Strootman improves our midfield but only cause it was soooo poor. Blind is the same. Good players but not the Jewel we are looking for.

To be fair a lot of people on here weren't very keen on him back when we were linked. He would be a perfect player to compliment our midfield right now, next to Herrera, Blind with Di Maria in front of them.

On a side note, I was calmly reading the article then I heard some voice spouting shite about LVB. Then I saw it's Craig Burley spouting some utter nonsense, attacking LVG cause he said Giggs may one day replace him.. So much nonsense in so short video. Astonishing.

Also, no transfer related but good video :) :

Don't Khedira and Strootman offer the same things? Run up and down the field to offer passing options to defensive and attacking players in crowded areas and recycle possession?
