I swear if we manage to get both of these guys we will be pretty unstopable in the league. We're a formidable side as it is, but with the addition of two genuine midfielders and if Kagawa and Clev can progress we should be amazing. So excited about it.

Yeah the midfield would be sorted with genuine competition for places and potential for different combinations. Nani signing on and Rooney getting his head sorted and aside from something crazy like getting Ronaldo, fabregas etc, it would be a perfect summer for united imo.

A player like this guy appears to be has been a necessity, in my opinion. Someone who can fill in if Carrick is unavailable. Or inevitably ends up having to play centre back.

Please, never again

We were even being linked with a 6th centre-back just to ensure that this didn't happen.

We CANNOT be as unlucky again this year at central defense. We have essentially 5 players fighting for two positions. Surely we will manage to have two fit all season for once.

I wouldn't bet on it. Either way, this kind of player has been something we've needed. An injury to Carrick last season that caused him to be unavailable for any length of time and we'd have been royally fecked.

Thiago is a dream signing, and I'll be delighted if we get him, but for me, back-up and cover for Carrick will be the most important move we make this summer.

As long as it isn't Felliani.

I agree with TN about Strootman's importance but Thiago's signing is just as crucial if not more. We've desperately lacked a creative driving force in the middle of the park and it doesn't look like Ando/Clevs are ready to take full responsibility of that position just yet. With Anderson seemingly gone and Cleverley not really up to the scratch, Thiago has the potential to take our midfield to the next level.

I'm not underrating how good a signing Thiago would be, I'm just saying that, for me, we've lacked a strong defensive option for when Carrick is unavailable. Put Carrick in our midfield and we'll get by in most games no matter who is alongside him. Take him out and we're fecked.

And I'm not necessarily talking about Strootman, I've no idea how good the guy is, I just mean the type of player he is.

Yeah I agree, cover for carrick, regardless of who else we sign is essential. Plus it would be good to start thinking of an understudy to carrick now anyway, whether its someone like strootman, wanyama, mccarthy etc, it's really important imo we get someone who can provide an alternative there.

So calm in here. Are we supposed to be signing this guy as well?

Ah back in the nice roomier, classier Strootman thread. I have to say we have never been let down by PSV signings before..that is until they let us down by leaving abruptly :nervous:

There is something strange about people from Holland - brilliant players but there is something rebellious about them.

It would definitely be good to have the option of both and I've gone on record as saying I think we actually need to looking at bringing in 3 CM's and getting rid of Anderson, I'd love one of those CM's to be a Thiago or Gundogan however I don't think that type of player is as essential as a ball winner with technical ability.

I also think that having a deep lying playmaker alongside a mobile ball winner with technical ability (Strootman looks pretty mobile and has good ability on the ball) would work just fine in Europe as well as domestically. As mentioned above Carrick managed the role of DLP just fine against Real away last season as well as at home (before the sending off) If you consider he was also playing alongside Phil Jones in the away game whos' technical ability is not as good as Strootman's then I think we'd be just fine with him as an upgrade in a similar role.
Why three? We'd have Thiago, Strootman, Carrick, Cleverley and games for Powell, Jones and Giggs.

We've clicked 'Delay this transfer for a week?', to see what happens with Thiago first.

Just trying to be a good pimp and keep the options open.
