Has anyone else even been linked to him? For a player with seemly so much attributes and potential, i would be have thought there would be load of clubs in for him but have heard anyone other then us?

*he says, before he signs for (insert any team other then United)*

It's like that old adage; 'If Chelsea aren't in for him then he must be shit.'

If you ignore the countless exceptions to the rule you'll find it an extraordinarily accurate maxim.

Arsenal and Spurs were linked with him.

This will happen. Personally, this is the "De Gea" or the "Kagawa" deal of this Summer. I see this as a nailed on move. This has been going on since December really. It's been quiet, but consistent mummerings.

Kagawa we were warned off of a year before by Dortmund officials. We also had Sir Alex say there was someone they'd try to get if its possible at that time. He got injured for a lenghtly time and the summer after he returned from injury, we went through and signed him

De Gea we were linked to in his first season and we saw our scouts watching him multiple times.

Kevin Strootman? Twitter. Youtube.

The other signings had an air of inevitability because of facts, perhaps Fellaini does too based on him being a player Moyes bought for a lot of money in the past. This guy has the power of rumour behind him and an inflated reputation based on very few people here actually watching him play a football match. That doesn't mean he isnt good or that we wont sign him, but this thread seems like the last place to look for assurances of either one.

The worry is that those who have watched him play a football match haven't been greatly impressed.

Yep. And I would be one of them. But its only 1 match that I've seen him so obviously my opinion isnt cast in stone. But I saw him Vs. Ajax this season, Ajax were all over them including in midfield and Mark Van Bommel clearly outshone him. Strootman was very very quiet, but holding next to Van Bommel who was clearly taking charge. A dissappointing watch but again, just one game.

If im not missing something, despite us having several dutch posters, they arent the ones coming on here calling him class and a midfielder that would improve and make it at United. I might have just missed those posts, but it has to mean something when those who watch him the most arent the ones going nuts over rumours of him signing for us

If this has legs, then it's unlikely we are looking for midfielders in the Zidane mould. We probably just want someone like Strootman to play alongside someone like Carrick in our unspectacular (at least to casual fans) midfield which will simply be the engine room behind a fantastic and scintillating attack involving the likes of Kagawa, Welbeck (who I think will be on fire next season, especially if Roo goes) and RvP.

I am also one of those that watches the dutch league nearly every week, and I AM going nuts over these rumours of Strootman to United. Just not in a positive way. [Repeat] I'd be surprised if he ever makes it at a higher level than let's say Fulham. [/Repeat]

As Sonny just mentioned.. Maher is indeed a good player. Isn't he poised to sign for Ajax or PSV though?

I said it before and i say it again , United should buy Adam Maher instead of Strootman. I'm Dutch i see both play every week .
Yep I've been very impressed with Maher, although he's been playing a lot more offensively than I thought he normally did. In terms of deeper players, Jordy Clasie looks to be a good player.

Strootman has the build of the player we need; tall, athletic, relatively strong and has a good eye for a pass. But whenever I've seen him he's failed to impose himself majorly on the game. If we see something in him that means he can in future perform the Carrick role of screening the defence, whilst becoming a partner of Carrick's in the immediate future then I'm happy to sign him. I think he'd flourish in a midfield 3, although I don't like the thought of him alongside Carrick in a 2 man midfield.

He scores and assists a lot for a midfielder and is only 19. Sign him up.

I think it's all set up for him to really perform at U21 Euros. Expect him to be the talk of the scouts if Holland do well.

What is your take on the Icelandic players in the league?

Namely Alfreð Finnbogason (Heerenveen), Kolbeinn Sigþórsson (Ajax), Aron Jóhannsson and Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (AZ).

So our dutch posters are saying he's not as good as another midfielder in Holland and that they'd be surprised if hes above Fulham's level

Can we be sensible now about how good he might be? Thought not

95% of the caf thought Gareth Bale was shit until not long ago though. There's little to suggest that the (two?) Dutch posters here have an accurate insight into Strootman's ability. It's not difficult to find articles praising Strootman; what reason do we have to value the opinion of two members of the caf over that of those elsewhere tipping him as being a future star?

Because we know for a fact that those dutch posters have actually watched him? I guess it depends on who actually writes these articles.

Bale was a bad defender, when he moved to midfield only the most pig headed of posters couldnt see he was a good player

Another thing that he as is strong leadership skills. Already Hollands vice captain at 23.

“Strootman is an example, on and off the pitch, especially inside the lines. On the pitch you see that he stands up for his team, outside the pitch this can improve. The fact that [Wesley] Sneijder is from the new generation and [Dirk] Kuyt is from the old generation made this decision. I needed someone from the youngest generation. You can see it as an education to become a captain”, Van Gaal was quoted as saying to Goal.com.

Plenty of them though. How do you know how good these few Dutch posters are at talent spotting?

I've seen Strootman's name pop up in various Eredivisie team of the season lists; I think it reasonably safe to assume these lists are drawn up by people who watch the Dutch league. My question is, why are you deferring to the apparent expertise of two members of the caf in favour of all those who rate Strootman very highly?

I think that a lot of this thread is based on a reputation that has been given to Strootman because he's been in Holland's NT setup and Holland has a big reputation as a national team. However Holland is going through a lot of changes currently with a lot of young new players coming through. They are currently not as strong as they were in 2010 and the young players will need time to devellop. So Strootman being in Holland's setup doesn't automatically make him a great player at this point.

Just crossed this article (of today) in AD (dutch newspaper). It's an interview with Wim Van Hanegem (former Holland and Feyenoord legend) who talks about the Dutch U21 squad Eurosquad:

http://www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1050/Jong-Oranje/article/detail/3451697/2013/06/03/Ik-ben-echt-geschrokken-van-de-laatste-weken-van-Strootman.dhtml

I translated the part about Strootman:

Willem van Hanegem: "I like all midfielders that Pot (coach) has taken. But I am very concerned. I continuously read that Pot is so lyrical about Strootman. I'm reading that the boy is a born leader, a strong personality, compliments all over. Pot should be careful with that. I also had a high opinion of Strootman, but the way he played in the last few weeks at PSV, I'm really shocked. Sometimes I did not know what I saw. One minute he just let his opponent get away from him, the next his positioning is all wrong. Especially in the decisive games, I wanted to see him. "

By the way, I'm not Dutch as some seem to suggest. I just watch a lot of the Dutch league because I have a strong link with Holland, with my business being based there and all.

 That doesn't sound too good.

He's also the captain of PSV

What seems obvious is that the player divides opinion. My advice to those who're yet to see him play would be to reserve judgment until such a time at which you have seen enough of him to form your own opinion; until then, how do you have any way of knowing which of those who don't rate him or those who see him as potentially world class are in the right?

That doesn't make it unreasonable to be excited about his potential transfer though; afterall, there are countless examples of young players proving their doubters wrong. If Strootman is to be a Manchester United midfielder then why not allow yourself to be excited by the prospect?

I'm just not able to get my inner muppet aroused about a player called Kevin. :(

Dont mention the match man, still gettin over it... again...

3 feckin yrs in a row man & by those cnuts aswell :(

Nail on the head there Cider. I've seen him and don't think he's all that good, however there's a lack of real available potential talent out there and if our scouts see something in him that they can work with then I've no opposition to us buying him.

Spot on.

Totally agree Cider.... HARRUMPH... HARRUMPH.....

He looks like a decent prospect, I'm sure he'll be a good player.. My concern is, from what I've seen he is very similar to Cleverley.

He keeps the ball well, he keeps things tidy, he's always moving and making himself free for the ball, he works hard - he's very similar. I don't see why we would want two players so similar in style.
