Defending now means 'actually completing a tackle and winning the ball with the least force possible and the least position available for the oponent to milk a free kick and/or dive'.

Side note - saw a documentary on the Liverpool vs Wimbeldon final on the weekend. Hilarious Jones tackle in the first 3 minutes that is just a straight red 10 match ban thse days.

But basically yeah, is he known as an excellent defender? If so then bring it on. Carrick needs this as he begins the twilight of his career.

Most ball these days is won from interceptions and opposition mistakes which are forced by pressure. A far smaller number of balls won today come from taking the ball off an opposition player with a tackle.

He's going to be a very exciting signing IMO. Just what we need in the middle of the park.

A lot of the time this season we were getting smoked on the counter due to Carrick being left isolated 1 on 1 with opponents in dangerous positions and the majority of the time on the counter.

If we were to deploy someone in a similar zone to Carrick that mirrored his range and ability but to shoulder more of the defensive role and allow him to basically be the 'quarterback' type player that suits his role nicely then it will go a long way to tightening us up this season. That for me is what we missed with the absence of Fletcher and watching a bit of 07/08/09 reruns this year our shape and style when defending counters and in defense in general was so much tighter stricter and cleaner and it was down to Fletcher's ability to press opponents so closely. In Carrick's game it is the total opposite. He'll let a man run 90 yards if he doesn't think he can make a tackle and in the hope that he can intercept Which is why we got chomped on the counter a LOT last season.

I realize that Fergie has/had moved away from limited ball winners and such but I feel with the new manager who favours tighter ball winning in defense it will be the perfect foil for Carrick to have a renaissance in the next 3 years and build on the great form from last season.

Let's hope it happens soon, really looks like an ideal fit to play alongside Carrick and would give us a very solid foundation for our attacking players to flourish.

What an inspiring signing. All I know of him is from Dutch friends, who all tell me that he's nothing special. Perhaps they're wrong. If we're signing him, I hope so, but they warned me about Buttner too.

...?

Odds drop and it's indicative of it happening to "We have signed a midfielder." ?

Bizarre.

It's not that bizarre, we all pretty much knew Moyes was going to be announced as manager even before the news of Fergie retiring was announced because the odds of Moyes being appointed manager were slashed the day before.

It is bizarre to take the odds being slashed as 'We have signed the player'. Usually I take 'Club has announced we have signed the player' as 'we have signed the player'...

But each to their own I guess.

Shut up ghaliboy, he's an honest to god central midfielder. Just fecking go with it.

Oh don't worry, I am in that picture marveling at the sandal. But I'm not calling it a sandal yet.. It's still 'possible footwear..' to me.

There's a reason we knew Moyes would be manager. Its because he was the obvious candidate from the premier league

How does that have anything to do with this player?

We might sign Strootman, but it'll have nothing to do with betting odds. Thats ridiculous

Speaking of bets, it's a safe bet that we really don't know whether Strootman is coming to OT. He may, he may not. We just don't know yet, regardless what the bookies think.

Fair enough, it's obviously not guaranteed but odds are obviously a decent indicator of the likelihood of a rumour being true.

Moyes wasn't the obvious candidate considering even the majority of people on the Caf thought Mourinho and Klopp were better candidates. Even if we thought he was the obvious candidate, the slashing of the odds helped confirm his signing.

As for your last statement, I'm not sure if you're being intentionally dense or what, but I'll explain: betting odds can, at times, be a good indicator as to the truthfulness of a rumour, no one is saying that the club will sign a player because the of the odds being slashed.

The odds have nothing to do with the truth of a rumour. They have everything to do with "punters" getting excited by a rumour

There aren't enough stupid 'punters' in the world who will drop enough cash to move the odds on the mere fact that they are excited by a rumour.

The bookies don't think anything. They responded to an inflow of money on Strootman by shortening the odds, and then suspended betting when the shorter odds didn't deter punters.

The question is what information prompted the betting surge? Most likely an image of Strootman's face was seen in a cloud hanging over Old Trafford.

Exactly, although hopefully it's not something that frivolous!

Some people obviously think they have some good information, and we'll find out whether they are correct soon enough.

Twitter, I'd assume. There's been next to nothing about him in the newspapers in recent times, nothing that I've seen anyway. But every few days you've got someone making a claim (yesterday it was that he signed a gentleman's agreement or whatever with us) and it spreads quickly.

Would be a very safe move for Moyes but a quality player nevertheless - not a headline player

I wasn't in the Caf when we signed Carrick, but were people excited at all for him? And look how he's turned out.
