Music Kanye West

Not that it matters but he's not gay, he's flamboyant to an extent but he's had several high profile relationships and several more rumored interludes with famous females, he's therefore pretty dedicated to making himself look very not gay, if this was all a game. Unless you mean someone other than Ye, in which case ignore this post!

Kanye is everything I hate about modern society. Mediocrity and egotism rewarded with riches to a vulgar extreme. He has some talent musically but is an absolute cnut and definitely not the sharpest pencil in the case. He's certainly not the demi-god or Cultural revolution some would have you believe. He's just a circus clown who sometimes does music. Not surprising he believes his own hype though, the way some go on about him.

I'd wager not many people take him seriously, beyond the music and shoes.

I like Jesus Walks. So there.

Alternate cover generator's been a great fun though.

God, no.
Amongst other things too tedious to list, I don't believe his marriage is a genuine one.

Well, considering how high profile he is and in this day and age, you'd think someone would leak something to the tabloids. I can't see it, personally.

1. MBDTF
2. Yeezus
3. 808's
4. College Dropout
5. Late Registration
6. Graduation

I didn't start really appreciating his stuff 'til 808's came out and it shows. His first three albums sound so basic, straightforward and predictable to me when compared to his last three.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for, my list would have College Dropout and Late Registration as the top 2 without any shred of doubt. In fact both would likely make my "top 10 hip hop albums of the 00s" list. In terms of traditional rap, those two are far far beyond his others.

Bowie is praised for his different periods but Kanye is weirdly hated for switching up, people seem loyal to one or the other period. Kanye had nothing left to prove after Late Registration for that style of music, why would he keep delving into it?

Bowie is praised for switching things up now but I'm sure there were plenty of people at the time saying his old stuff was better. All those complaints about Dylan going electric faded with time too.

Experimentation and deviation from the norm tend to be disliked in hip-hop especially when an established artist does it. There is a large portion of hip-hop fans who simply want everything to be like the 90s. Moreover, people become accustom to a certain sound from an artist and believe this is how they should always make music. I can only speak for changes in the last 10 or so years in hip-hop before that I don't know how people would have reacted to style changes.

Its not just hip-hop though, wasn't there some backlash when Radiohead experimented with a different style on Kid A? I understand it was very polarising at the time but that was before I was really knew anything about Radiohead or music in general.

@sullydnl 's album ranking is exactly the same as mine.

After Graduation Kanye stopped making radio friendly unit shifters which is what most people like. Even on MBDTF there isn't really an obvious single.

Really? Gorgeous, Power, All Of The Lights, Monster and Lost In The World aren't exactly songs without mainstream appeal. I mean All Of The Lights has an obvious hook with Rihanna on it. That statement would apply to Yeezus more so.

All of the Lights and Monster were pretty big singles. The former being very radio friendly.

All of the Lights didn't hit number one in any country. Considering the massive massive success of some of his previous singles and Kanye's huge profile it didn't do that well.

@Striker

I don't think those tracks were as pop as 'Stronger' or ''Gold Digger', for example. They are not obvious pop songs to me.

It was still a fairly big single with a lot of radio play, having Rhianna featured also lends credibility to it being an obvious single from the album. Moreover, All of the Lights was released at a time of decreasing music sales and I don't know if YouTube streams counted at that time. Nonetheless, a single can still be big without hitting number 1.

As an aside, do they count Youtube views now?

I get where you're going with this but Bowie and Mr K have nothing in common.. Bringing them up both at the same time brings shame to Bowie's great name.

My top 6 FWIW

1. College Dropout
2. Late Registration
3. MBDTF
4. Graduation
5. 808's
6. Yeezus

Hard to pick a 'worst' because I'd consider even Yeezus at least an 8/10. The fact that this guy continues to innovate and consistently produce so brilliantly after all these years, astounds me.

Yeezus is up for debate, but MBDTF is a genuinely great album. Took the conventions of hip-hop and buried them.

His producing abilities are unquestionable, and unchallenged; nonethless, he has conjured some great lines, despite his abilities as a rapper being inferior to his production abilities.

He's a gay fish though.

Is his sexuality in question? He's undoubtedly gay, apparently. Goes out with some Givenchy model, allegedly. Has done for a very long time, allegedly.

Never really connected much with MBDTF, I absolutely adore Power though. That King Crimson sample and the drums

Edit: I'd rather not say actually. I'll just say its quite commonly known in certain circles. Maybe wrong to say homosexual, bisexual is accurate.

On Yeezus? All of them.

On MBDTF, there's a few I like. Runaway probably being the best track on there.

Yeesuz is anything but pop both in the soundscape and the lyrical content for the most part. There wasn't a single radio hit on that album. The sound was very industrial and experimental. How can anyone say songs like 'Black skinhead' and 'New slaves' are pop?

This isn't completely true (although the 90s was the golden era of rap, hip hop being a different beast). It's just a shame that today's poster child for rap is so average (in terms of rapping ability and actual content; although an innovative producer, as noted already).

Arguably the most famous rapper alive, but his lyricism is really underwhelming.
