Julian Draxler

I can see you guys signing him either in the summer or next year. Hope United snatches up Shaqiri though, he'd be an improvement on what we have.
Robben will get a new contract, which means we already have Ribery, Robben and Müller as better wide players than him in the team, I can't see Draxler being first choice ahead of any of them in the next 2 or 3 years and he doesn't fit in a central role in Guardiola's style, imo. He'd be a new record signing for us and he's not the key to our success now and most likely also not in the future. I really can't see us paying that much money for him. Just like we weren't interested in Özil at all in the summer.

I was wrong before when I said I can't see us going for Thiago, but he was significantly less expensive and basically a welcome gift for the new manager. (Also I find Draxler annoying and Shaqiri is a bit of a fan favorite despite being only a role player, so I really hope he stays a bit longer).

Why is Draxler annoying and why do fans like Shaqiri if you don't mind me asking ?

Draxler extended his contract until 2018 around easter 2013, followed by a marketing campaign with the slogan 'with pride and passion till 2018' launched by Schalke, however a few days later someone 'leaked' his €45m exit clause turning the whole thing into a farce. Since he now has an official price tag the media have linked him with literally every top club in Europe and all of them are supposedly eager to buy him out of his contract.
Even though you can hardly blame Draxler for Schalke's slogans or the usual media BS it looks like he got a bit carried away with all the talk about him. His development seems to be stagnating at best (compared to last season) but despite that he still talks moving to a top5 club in the (very) near future like once a month and criticized his club in the press for not playing him in the center (during a time of crisis). In contrast to that most of the other German talents seem more humble and focused.

Shaqiri seems like that typical cheerful player who works very hard and always has a smile on his lips despite being second choice.

ofc I can not speak for Balu, so his perspective might be completely different

Because one talks about himself all the time while the other is just a funny, likeable guy who's highly entertaining in interviews. I also agree with everything do.ob has written above.

Cheers guys. Will Shaqiri replace Ribery then?

Ribery doesn't need to be replaced, he just turned 30, why shouldn't he play at least 2 or 3 more years on this level? There's nothing that suggests otherwise so far. And even then, with Lewandowski coming in, we could play:

----- Lewandowski ------
Götze Kroos Thiago Müller
------- Martinez --------

All only 25 years or younger, so no need to think too much about replacements for Schweinsteiger, Ribery, Robben yet.

I don't mind Draxler going somewhere else, Max Meyer is at least equally talented if not more, so we can snap him up in 2 or 3 years if we need another young German AM ;) .

Should we do this to ourselves? Draxler's buyout clause is reported by the telegraph to be active next summer and Shalke are saying they have no control of some factors about his future. Will this become another 200+ pages thread next summer only for Draxler to end up at Arsenal? :(

A few of my Arsenal mates seem to be pretty confident of him joining them.

Talented though he is, it would seem to be a superfluous signing. Mind you Arsene does like to collect technical AMs.

If he signs for Arsenal, they'll be up there with Real, Barca, City, Chelsea and Bayern.

Sorry but are you being sarcastic? Please say you are. I genuinely don't know.

No they won't, he's another AM/winger, something they've an abundance of. Very talented lad but certainly not the finished article and certainly not enough to make only the 2nd/3rd best team in the PL up there with one of the best squads ever assembled (Bayern).

Is he really that good?. I have seen him on a few occasion's and I must admit he never stood out to me as a potential world beater. I feel the fact Schalke are trying to cash in on him now as much as possible, they are just taking advantage of the flavour of the month.

Perhaps he will prove me wrong, but I feel he is on the verge of games too much.

Well, they won't better, but they'll certainly compete with them. They've been in the fringes up to this year, but with another added talent they'll be able to seriously compete in more than one competition.

Because of one talented young player? No way.

Anyway, they can theoretically already compete them, they've a good enough team to upset anyone in Europe on their day, it doesn't mean they're close to being as good.

They're not trying to cash in, they can't control the fact that his buyout clause is active next summer.

Yes but they are trying to offload him this summer, rather than wait.

I think they know people are reluctant to pay close to £50M for him, as he genuinely is not really worth that.

Wenger quite rightly paid that amount for Ozil who has done it at the top level, to me Draxler still need's to perform in the big games.

They market him in a way that is a bit strange for a homegrown talent, not sure if they want someone to trigger the release clause or if they just try to look as great as Dortmund. Probably a bit of both. They signed Sam, who clearly outperformed Draxler this season so far, for peanuts already and could strengthen the team a lot with €45m. Draxler won't stay longterm anyway and they won't get more for him next year, so why waste a year developing him into a great player who won't be here anyway when he finally performs consistently. They have more than enough brilliant young talents in the team even without him.

From what I can gather we are following him very closely but I don't think we will buy him at the £37.5mill price. Can't see us signing him in January but I think we'll make a move in the summer. This January there don't seem to be many viable options for us to strengthen up top hence why some are speculating we'll move now.

Balu, any idea if he is injured or not? Some conflicting reports here about him being out for 3 months.

Raptured a muscle fiber (at least I hope it's called that in English) at the beginning of December, not sure how long he'll be out in total. Afaik he's still in recovery and the club hasn't said when he will return.

Why would Arsenal want Draxler? Don't they have enough attacking midfielders?

They'd be better off splashing the cash on a world class striker or strengthening their defense.

Would be insane not to bid for this bloke if he was available....you can see him going to arse in summer time though

It's annoying but this is the type of deal that I can't envisage us getting involved in. Even though we spent big on the likes of Fellaini, we've seemed reluctant over the last 4 or 5 years to spend big money anywhere other than the premier league. I used to have some confidence on deals such as this but now I've none at all.

All the top clubs want Draxler. He'll most likely end up Real Madrid or Bayern.
