Juan Mata

Neville said it was the way he took it that made it top drawer, it was almost behind him and he took it on in that mannor. It was classy but you would expect that, if he missed it would have been a bad miss considering the space he had which says it all. It's not astonishing if you're expected to score...

Saying that i think there is a real difficulty in making a great connection in this mannor when the ball has came such a distance, but again it was classy not "astonishing".

In a big game, on Sky HD/3D, it's astonishing.

Read somewhere that he created most chances in the league. Is that true?

Personally, I was impressed with his performance. Scored a cracker and was close to scoring an even better goal at the end.

Well, a newbie sent me a pm that sort of confirms it:

Since I'm a newbie and can't respond in the mains, I'll send the answer via PM:

Yes, he's created most chances in the Premier League so far. Statistics so far:

Total key passes:

1. Juan Mata: 71
2. David Silva: 68
3. Samir Nasri: 49

If true, that's a quite impressive stat. Obviously, Mata and Aguero enjoy great first seasons in the Prem.

Just seen that he made the most key passes per game in the league last season at 3 per game. Thats only .1 more than Silva made (2.9) and Modric (2.7). And Silva obviously had the better season. But still, it shows how creative a player Mata is

He averaged 87% pass accuracy, this time .1 behind Silva (87.1%)

Strange one this, because whenever I've watched him he doesn't scare me. I never feel that he's as threatening as Silva or Modric. Psychological I suppose...or the players around him aren't good enough to do anything with his intelligence.

Did Silva really have a better season? Mata for me was more consistent over the whole season and not to mention Silva was playing in a much better team. Mata pretty much had to bare all of Chelseas creative burden and dealt with some strikers who were pretty out of form for large parts of the season.

And he was played out of position by AVB, so much better now he has come central.

I dont think theres really a question that Silva had a better season. Looking at the numbers the biggest difference is that Silva averaged around 10 more passes per game. More involved in setting the tempo and dictating play

How good is he for the current Spain team? He he as effective as the likes of Xavi/Iniesta in the of the work he does for Spain that he performs at Chavski.

Point being .... is he worth having in my Euro fantasy league team over Xavi an Inniesta?!

Is that Ekeke saying something good about Silva? The Mayans were right!

Edit - this is my 6666th post, we're all doomed.

I'd be surprised if he even gets on the pitch, with the ludicrous amount of talent they have in that midfield area.

Same number of goals as Silva, only two less assists, same pass completion %, whilst playing in a far weaker team... Can't be much in it.

Think how many assists he'd have had if Torres was on form.

So exactly how is Hazard going to play as the "number 10". Either Chelsea are going to feck Mata over and shove him out wide, Hazard won't get what he wants or they'll try and shoe horn them both into the middle and ruin the team.

They'll probably just end up swapping. Silva doesn't always play as a number 10, neither does nasri, they have license to move across the front. If chelsea line up with Mata Hazard and Marin behind a striker I can see them all having license to drift and swap. Maybe Hazard will spend the most time as a number 10 but I doubt they'll have set roles.

Hazard plays plenty of key passes too and had the most dribbles in ligue 1 last season as well as all his assists and goals. I think its fair to say whoever they play behind the front man is going to be a great option and whoever is employed on the left will also do really well for them

I'm the same. Never quite got the fuss. He's certainly got an eye for a pass, but he seems to be contained quite easily, doesn't quite have the pace to get away from players, weak physically and tires very easily. Maybe i just havn't seen enough of him but i've never seen him boss a game, just impress in flashes.

I'd play Hazard on the left no question. He's more natural there than Mata IMO, better at dribbling whilst I think Mata has a better eye for the pass.

Mata's a good player but he wasn't great last season. Mind you he was adjusting to the PL and playing in an unsettled side.

He was excellent at times last season and I only expect him to get even better this season.

I don't think his contribution was fully appreciated.

How he wasn't nominated for POTY I'll never know.

You're joking, he was nowhere near POTY with Silva, Rooney and RvP in the mix.

For a first season in a new league/team/country, Mata has done very well.Sometimes people are too harsh and expect big things from relatively young players too quickly.
He's done much better than Silva has in his first season (not saying he'll end up being a better player obviously)

Joe Hart was the best keeper in the PL last season so why not. Parker won it last season, feck knows how.

Joe Hart and Scott Parker were nominated so I don't see why not.

As much as I can see why you'd think Mata should've been considered, even if I'm not sure of it myself, that's flawed logic. You can't really look at players who shouldn't have been nominated and justify it by that.

I'll have to wash my mouth out with soap but Bale was better than Mata last season even if he disappeared for the last 3 months.

Been excellent ever in the past month or so. 4 goals and 5 assists in the last 5 matches.
