The point is not that. The point is why would he accept being a 5th choice when he could go to another decent club(Villa, Everton) and be first choice for them.
Saw it in a couple of forums but no stating of source yet, probably wind ups though
But if you lot have a choice of Gibson or Barton, who will you rather have?
Barton's a far better player than Gibson.
FFS This comparison again. Gibson was our 5th choice midfielder, Barton will not come here to be a 5th choice midfielder. This "isn't he better than Gibson" argument used for average-decent midfielders(Adam, Barton) are really annoying as there is no comparison.
Why did Michael Owen accept the role of fourth striker?
I don't want Barton, I hasten to add.

Exactly, when did being better than Gibson become the primary criteria when looking for players?
Can you imagine him coming here and playing 20 games a season, being comsistently overlooked for big games and settling for it? Because thats where Gibson is, and theres no way Barton is better than Fletcher or Carrick.
Or rather; theres no way Barton should be higher than 5th choice - which I don't think he would be IF he joined. Anderson, Fletcher (get well soon xx), Carrick and Cleverley would all be ahead of him as I see it. Giggs probably as well. It's tough to say who's the better player of Gibson and Barton. I'm not a big fan of Gibson, but I think he's very underrated by many United supporters simply because we expect every United player to perform exceptionally. Players like Barton (and Adam too) are often praised on here for doing well in smaller teams although many of their performances would not have been praised if they were playing for United. Grass is greener etc.
I'm not saying Gibson is better because I really don't know. In my book they're pretty equal. I'd much rather keep Gibson instead of signing Barton and selling Gibson though. Gibson is younger and can still improve (need I refer to Fletcher?) and he's been at the club for a long time. Although Barton didn't do anything stupid last year from what I remember I still don't trust him and I wouldn't want a 5th/6th choice player to potentially upset the great spirit within our squad.
When you get comments like Gibson is as good as Barton, you wonder whether people actually watch non-United games. But that's besides the point, it's not a Gibson thread.
Barton's done a lot of bad things in his life, but he's never been bad at football. He's a top 8 player - ie, could start for anyone 6-8 but only would be a sub for a 1-5 team. As I say, I'd have no problem with him in the Arsenal squad, he'd be useful to have around, as long as he keeps up the good behaviour that he's shown over the last couple of years.
Skysports.com understands Arsenal, Tottenham and Stoke have made enquiries about Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton.
In 2004 Joey Barton famously stubbed out his cigar at then Manchester City youth player Jamie Tandy.
Tandy was subsequently released by the club and late battled alcoholism and depression. In an interivew with the Mirror Tandy revealed:
“When I was in rehab at Sporting Chance part of the therapy helps you to discover where your alcohol addiction comes from,” said Tandy.
“Alcoholism often runs in the family, but there was none of that in my background and, when I looked back at when the drinking took over, it all stemmed back to that f***ing Christmas party.
“At the time Barton hadn’t been in trouble before. People thought it must have been my fault because he didn’t have a reputation back then.
“Well people know the truth now, don’t they? He was fined 60 grand and I kept quiet. In the end it didn’t matter because City decided that I was the one they had to get rid of.”
We're already taking a chance with an unproven dickhead.......

.
Wouldn't have imagined Michael Owen doing that but you've summed up his United career right there.
If Fergie wants rid of gibson - and he obviously does - I don't see the problem with replacing him with a player who is far better, so long as he is willing to follow Owen's lead and accept that reputation doesn't guarantee games when you sign for Manchester United.

One was a striker entering his 30s his best days behind him, the others at the peak of his career.
Owen was 29 when you signed him. Batron turns 29 on 2nd September. Not a huge difference.
joey barton would be cancer in the locker room while owen is a positive influence.
Its not a signing I want but saying that he is apparently very popular with his Newcastle teammates. Perhaps he really has turned a corner.
It's well known among psychologists that psychopaths can be superficially charming.
Fixed (the bolding part, not the spelling mistake you muppet)So you've made the leap from him being a bit of a thug to a psychpath?
