Willian would make a huge difference and bring out the best in current players without having to sign sicknote Bale. At least the board have got their collective fingers out and done two deals now instead of 23.59 on deadline day.

We already signed a RB and CM.

CB
Alderweireld, Koulibaly, De Ligt

LB
Sandro, Tierney, Telles

CM
Draxler, Fekir or Savic

RW
Bale, Griezmann or Dybala

Really?

We already have a lot of midfielders with defensive capabilities like Matic, Fred, Herrera, McTominay and Pereira. IMO Pogba is the only one creative.
If City can play a midfield of Gundogan-Silva-KDB or it seems that Liverpool would play a midfield of Fabinho-Keita-Fekir... I think a versatile creative player could be a good option.

Draxler played as No.8 this season next to Verrati and Rabiot, and he did well. Also, he is able to play behind the striker, on the wings or as a false 9. He's only 24 years old so he can still continue improving. Last season our problem wasn't the defense, it was scoring goals and creating opportunities.

I meant Draxler as a CM

We bought 2 players but from now things will be tricky. Only buying left back is obvious thing that we will do. But the rest, not so much. I wouldn't be surprised if we buy left back only.
We have now 4 midfielders who will want to play every match plus mctominay plus pereira. I doubt that we will buy another mc. Having 7 midfielders would be too much to make them all happy.
We have 5 central defenders. We will buy new only if we sell somebody. But who? Bailly and lindelof are not for sale( i guess), rojo signed new contract, mike and phil are teachers pets.
Right winger? Yes, we need him. But we have alexis and lukaku for two positions. And 4 players fighting for another one. 6 players in attack. Again, only if we sell someone, we will buy new attacker/winger. And don't forget that jose said after alexis transfer, that he is happy with attack.

Yes Jose did say that but if someone like Bale or Griezmann are available (which looks like they possibly are) and would be open to joining us, then no doubt Jose will be on the ringer to Woodward to make sure he gets that deal wrapped up.

Don't think we are buying another fullback. We will utilise dalot in rotation with Valencia and Young probably until January or next year.

Probably have to fall back on Young and Valencia with Dalot as back up. Unless there are movements on some Out.

2 signings wont do it.

We need at least 4, wouldn't complain at 6 with at least 6 leave based on our current squad.

If your happy with 2 signings and keeping the likes of blind/rojo/jones/fellaini then you can kiss any hopes of finishing in the top 4 good bye.

Teams around us will improve. This league is getting harder and we need to stay in that top bracket, to do that we need to sign more than 2 players I'm afraid.

Plus we've already signed 2 and Jose is in for a LB and CB and possibly RW - so your point is invalid anyway

As I said and clarified already. I said two starters.

And you think two are enough to catch City?

I won’t derail the thread but yes. Two starters, with an improvement on our system as the focus should be doable. A team, for example: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Sandro, Matic, Herrera, Pogba, Bale, Sanchez, Lukaku.

Bench of Romero, jones, rojo, young, Dalot, Martial, rashford, lingard, mctominay, mata, and a couple of back ups, is a good enough team and squad (of 24) to win the league. I don’t think anybody could argue that that is a side not good enough to win it.

My point is making 4-5 signings for starters might well improve us but it’s a huge ask at any time to expect a side to have that much upheaval and win the league. It would be a revamp,of both style and personnel. Unless we change our style no matter who we sign won’t make us better.

What about the Swiss midfielder from stoke...seems creative
and a good bargain.

not sure if anyone has posted this on this particular thread but this guy was mentioned in the Transfer Tweets a couple of days ago. He looks electric.

Dennis Man (Steaua Bucuresti)

Probably would be cheap and worth a gamble to fix our RW woes.

We need a right winger, and as long as he can go past players and put in a good cross, I don't really care if he is not a marquee player. There is some really good young talent out there, and not too expensive if we look hard enough.

Didn’t their chairman confirm we have interest? If so, that’s definitely Ribalta at work.

I dont know if i am the only one but i still believe that young and valencia are wing players rather than full backs and would have contributed more.

Eagerly awaiting the first person to come along and act like they have extensive knowledge of the performances of a player from the Romanian league.

What literally every outlet has left out (apart from Sport Witness, who do better fact checking than any newspaper), is that he said we asked about Man *2 months* ago

“I do not know why Mourinho came to Romania, but I know that Manchester, two months ago, was interested in Man and we asked about €30m. That’s what I ask. When they’re not for sale, I ask very much. I want to take a lot more money, not €30m. I do not want to sell him for 3, 5, 10. I want 30 to make his price, so I could get 60, 100, million.”

Yeah, apparently so. Although I did not verify who that guy was or if was even an agent so don't quote me. I am a little intrigued as to why it never went further than that tweet in terms of media hype.

I will have you know my good man that I studiously monitor the Romanian league and therefore have the authority in terms of opinions on whats what. :wenger: I think we have some Romanian caf members but they may not even follow that league either. Would love a run down from them.

We already signed a RB and CM.

The RB is a teenager, who, knowing Jose, will not get more than a few minutes of game time this season or the next.
He is one for the future..maybe.

What we need are players who can elevate us to a higher level, such that we can win the league, this season. Dalot is not that sort of player (at age 19).
My guess is that Darmian is a better RB than Dalot. Of course, when Dalot reaches his mid-20s, I hope he'll be better than Darmian. In other words, by replacing Darmian with Dalot, I think we have down graded (for this season).

Fred is the only player we have signed, capable of improving us (improving our depth).

Javier Ribalta is definitely having an influence with our transfer policy this summer but Jose and Woodward are looking for the following;

Marquee Right Winger/SS : G Bale, A Griezmann, Ronaldo( yes I know this is a muppet signing) - Cost 85-125M

Ball Playing CB/ Leader :
T Auderweireld, P Boatang, R Varanne, L Bonucci - Cost 45-60M

AM/ Box to Box:
Sergej Milinokovic, Arturo Vidal, T Kross- Cost 40- 100M

ALL the other players are alternative options if at least 2 signings from the above 3 categories are not made, the problem is one of D De Gea, Pogba and Martial may have to leave to make that sort of investment on top of the £65M already made.

Jose knows nothing but a premier league challenge will save him from the chop and I'm sure has going for broke this summer.
United Fans just need to be patient and not worry to much about what other premier league teams are doing.

We are still Manchester United, the biggest club in the UK and one of the top 3 in World Football and that means an awful lot to most footballers in World football!

I hope it wont be one more signing and that's it,done and dusted before the WC.

You'll be pretty lucky to see one more transfer in the 5 days before the world cup! No chance we're getting two done - we've done well to get two others done before.

There are plenty of players we're (allegedly) targeting who aren't even at the WC (Lenglet, Tierney, Sandro, Bale, for example)

I suspect the Times article from the OP is a load of bollocks and we’re all going to be unsatisfied this summer

2 Midfielders
We signed Fred to play next to Matic and Pogba, we have Herrera, Pereira, McTominay and Fellaini to rotate with them. So, I woudn't buy another CM this summer because we have other priorities. Also, I would sell Fellaini and use Fosu-Mensah to rest Matic. Next summer, I would go for a young CM.

LB
Sandro seems like the most logic choice, but I wouldn't be surprised if he stays at Juventus. If Mourinho wants to play Young, then a young LB like Tierney would be my choice.

RB
We just signed Dalot. Looking forward to see him play.

RW
There are a lot of young wingers and some experienced ones. Bale is the best RW we can get, If Barca signs Griezmann, then, Dembele could be a good option. Mahrez would be an obvious choice but it seems he is off to City.

CB
We should sign Alderweireld but not this summer, I would sign him next year for 25m because Levy will ask crazy money for him. If we decide to spend a lot of money on a defender, Koulibaly would be my choice, or even a younger CB like De Ligt.

I think we are not going to sign a lot of players like Griezmann, Umtiti, Bale, Alderweireld, Sandro, etc because they will stay/sign new contract with their current club. Or their club will ask crazy money for them.

Our priority should be a RW and a LB. Next summer, we can sign another CM and Alderweireld for 25m (even if we sign a cheaper CB this transfer window).

RW, LB and LCB to finish off the squad.

In attack, we need some pace and quality on the right.

I don't think we need a CM that badly even if Fellaini leaves, since we have Pogba, Fred and Matic to start, Herrera to cover all 3 and then a few good options as a 10 (Lingard and Mata primarily) and then McTominay or maybe one of Tuanzebe or Fosu-Mensah or Blind to play as a 6 if Matic and Herrera are both gone.

Young isn't strong enough defensively off the ball to be 1st choice and Shaw has the talent but seems like he can't be relied on to produce as 1st choice.

CB is the 3rd priority but it's tough to see any of Bailly's partners having a great season next year as Lindelof seems to have a ways to develop despite playing so well for Benfica, Smalling can't pass, Jones is always confused and Rojo has injury and until last year at least, Bramble-esque moments of insanity. Mourinho's style protects them, but it would be nice to sell one off and bring in an LCB who can pass like Koulibaly and hopefully years of a great partnership with Bailly, who has his pace but not his vision.

Good job we got 2 signings wrapped up before the World Cup.

There would have been a meltdown on here if we got to this stage with no signings!

I think a RW and CB are certainties which will amount to 4 signings. I don't expect more than 5. The 5th could be a backup striker, a young left back or another CM.

I'd love to see Bale at United. It would be a massive, massive upgrade on RW.

DDG / Romero

Tony / Dalot .... Smalling / Jones .... New CB / Bailly .... Young / Shaw

Matic / Hererra

Fred / McTomminay .... Pogba / Fellaini

Bale / Lingard ...... Sanchez / Rashford

Lukaku / Martial

Shaping up to be a very nice squad. It's not complete yet, I'd say next summer's transfer window will be the completed re-build by adding a world class LB, CB and CM.

Bravo to Mourinho for transforming the squad he took over, it was fecking awful.

Right now would be a great time for us to sign a hot prospect centre midfielder that has a chance at becoming a future playmaker, not straight into the side but will be given a lot of opportunities throughout the season. Our new head scout Ribalta will no doubt deliver if given the challenge :smirk:

Periera was signed for this exact reason.

What will happen is we'll sell periera, sign a young player, not play him, loan him out deem him not good enough without giving him a chance and repeat the process.

I love all this "we need to sign youngsters and bed them in" logic when we have been signing youngsters for the future for years and not playing them!

Lets sign a LB = we have Shaw
Lets sign a back up striker = we have Rashford/Martial
Lets sign a young CB = we have Tuanzebe/Lindelof/TFM
Lets sign a young CM = we have periera

What we need is an experienced CB and a top level RW.

We can solve a lot of our problems by using what we have in the squad already.

Yes, some players need moving on and upgrading. But we have good prospects here already.

Talk of whether a loan for Rashford is better for him is crazy, he's top draw and needs to stay and play here. They could all be good enough if given a chance and integrated into the 1st team

If hes looking for 6 then i only reckon we'll end up with 5. We'll miss out an a second midfielder I reckon.

IF those sporting players get to walk for free, then we should look at Martins for RW & maybe William Carvalho to rotate with Matic. Admittedly I haven’t seen much of him this season though

IIRC Carvalho is not very mobile. He's good on the ball but not excellent.
He's a big guy who can tackle but I would like a DM who is a bit more mobile and better on the ball.
Martins would be a good buy

Martins has always looked like a bit of a headless chicken on the odd occasion I've seen him. Might be a decent option from the bench to terrify tired defenders late on, but not sure he really has the quality to start games at the top level.

I would obviously cede authority to any regular watchers/our resident Portuguese posters, though.
