This thread is further proof to me that, whilst it may well be true that us English fans overhype some of our players, we also massively downplay quite a few others.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that Pickford is the best solution to our goalkeeper problem right now. How he'd transition from a side in which he's evidently under tactical instruction to predominantly go long with his kicks to one where he'd need to demonstrate more range and judgement with his choice of passes is, in my view, an entirely reasonable concern.
Furthermore, I'm also not a massive fan of the idea of having both Pickford and De Gea on the roster. I can somewhat see the logic behind keeping De Gea around to ease the pressure on a younger goalkeeper like Diogo Costa or Bart Verbruggen, or even just a goalkeeper who isn't used to the pressure that comes with being United's first choice keeper like David Raya. That logic somewhat falls apart if the keeper you're signing is a 29 year old who has been England's number one for the best part of the last decade. It seems inevitable in that scenario that one of the two would end up being a needlessly expensive back-up.
With all that said, I don't understand the sentiment shared by many fans that Pickford just outright isn't a good goalkeeper. This is strange to me given that the overwhelming consensus among Everton fans, who whilst having obvious biases are also the fans who watch him the most, is entirely the opposite. His shot stopping does raise question marks (although this season it's actually been very strong), and he doesn't have massively high numbers for stopping crosses either, but he has consistently shown himself to be a proactive goalkeeper for Everton and considering that he's asked to launch so many of his passes, he is also very accurate when doing so which plays a part in him earning a reputation for being good with the ball.
Overall, as I've said, Pickford isn't my number one choice for the goalkeeper position this summer. However, IF he were to be available for the reported £30 million, I do also think the deal would represent fairly reasonable value and that he'd be quite a considerable upgrade on De Gea.
