Jonny Evans is a red...

I'll take him as 5th choice CB behind Lindelöf and Shaw.

Sell Maguire and invest the money on a striker and hopefully a cover for Casemiro.

This is a nice story. Should we keep him for the season? It would be heart over head stuff, but its a nice thought.

I mean it is a nice story but he still PL quality and still a good CB. With a limited budget I think he'd a good solid back up if we sell Maguire.

Could be good in the Heaton role of guy who never plays but is a great influence in the locker room. Feels like it was yesterday when he was an up and comer giving Drogba hell, time flies.

I'm shocked. In terms of back-up, he's probably not bad to have!!

Sign him up for the year.

Funnily enough this former Leicester City defender was better for Leicester than the one we purchased for a record fee. He is the typical example of a player that had a tough time somewhere and found his form in a different environment.
Hes miles better than maguire which is fooking mad when you think about how much we sold him for.

As much as I love Jonny this does feel a bit sentimental. My guess would be Fergie had a part to play in this.

It's not necessarily sentimental. There are two things to take into account, maybe he needed a place to train during summer before joining someone and Manchester United were glad to help him which is good for everyone involved, the player and also the club relationship with its former players, it's similar to former players working on their coaching licenses at United, like RVP(?), Fletcher or Fortune did.
The other angle is that Evans is an experienced player, he has experienced success at the highest level. He has generally been described as professional and someone with leadership skills which is always valuable, he doesn't need to play to have value for the club or the staff.

I like Evans, even though I have realised over thr years that he is not quite good as I once thought he is. Great to see him back though, what a surprise!

Do we bet how much we are paying him, I wouldn't be surprised if it's over 60-70k knowing our board?

As experience in the dressing room and a worse case 5th CB who can play 10 games a year, it would be great on a free. Bin Maguire.

Does his wife still work for MUTV?

I love the enthusiasm for this. Unless it’s to help out as fifth choice centre half, it’d be mental for him to stay beyond pre-season, though.

I also kinda love the revisionism. If any player actively played themselves out of the club post-Ferguson then it was Evans. He was genuinely abysmal in the period up to his departure, and ultimately he was responsible for how it ended.

He’s had a great career, mind.

Should never have let him go in the first place, well done LVG. Hopefully he has one last good year in him, a decent back up and a good all round pro.

It's an interesting one. Maybe they have brought him in for the summer months with the view to keeping him on for the season if nobody else is brought in and / or Maguire leaves. Not the worst idea.

I wonder who contacted who here. Did Jonny get in touch with SAF (or Fletch) and ask him for a place to train or did someone at the club find out that he needed a place to keep match fitness ticking over and gave him a call?

Either way, good to see him back. I liked Evans and was sad that we didn't at least get a reasonable fee for him.

I wonder with Henderson and McTominay both linked with moves away. Evans would help us another home grown for our european squad. He'd also be a decent back up option.

With De Gea gone and no more Sir Alex players left, ETH just signs one up instead.

Has anyone actually read what Utd have said?

He's here for two games, one of which is with the academy.

It's not some big news you nobs.

He'll be cheap on wages and won't play much if at all (4th behind Varane, Martinez and Lindelof).

I still think he's good enough to be a regular for a lower table PL team so as a 4th choice he's probably over-qualified.

I’d imagine it happened organically - a text message here or there. United are good to former players; it’s something the club gets right.

Great professional, great experience, can play right or left sided centre back, good on the ball, good in the air, knows the club inside out and would be happy as a back up option.

Obviously our first choice pairing is Varane and Martinez with Lindelof as main back up then Shaw if needed but Evans provides another option and even at this stage of his career is much more an ETH type centre back than Maguire, hopefully Maguire now gets the hint and accepts a move as he may now be sixth choice.

He's here for 2 preseason games, 1 of which is with the youth team.

He is one of the few players for which I regretted the sale. He was struggling but it was clearly out of character and I can't help but think that maybe there was a solution that didn't involve a sale.

She and David May at least used to work in the Man Utd podcast. Haven't listen to it for a while.

Evans is the second-most decorated player in Northern Irish football history

I love the fact that he is back with the club, hopefully a one year deal as a backup. A real fighter and a leader.

If his wage demands are low (30-40k/week), I wouldn't mind getting him as fifth choice CB. I think we can manage just with Varane, Lisandro, Lindeloff (and Shaw there), but having another body to play those 8-12 matches per season would be better.
