Jonny Evans is a red...

Great player, my estimation of him as a man has skyrocketed. Well in son!

I think the majority will concede Evans was lucky to escape punishment but that shouldn't stop us from praising other parts of his game where he was fantastic tonight. Go away.

... or revelling in the fact that such a nice chap like Drogba was on the receiving end. Was a horrible tackle but its still hilarious that he was on the end of it. Only John Terry being on the end of it could have made it feel any better.

Evans didn't need to do Terry, Ashley Cole took care of that.

Nah I reckon Vida was laughing and thinking 'Silly amateur, forget just studs into the chest, I'd have cut the cnut in half'

Superb performance from Jonny today. Lucky to escape that, but the lad has passion in bundles and I love him. He's fantastic.

once again, you speak sense. Lad was great but lucky. Very excited to see him in the first team for the next number of years

Just flicked through the BBC channels I'm aware of and its not on. Racist is this.

Saw it on BBC website a few days ago, suppose it's worth a watch.

With all the Evans thoughts/posts in Vidic thread, thought I'd post my thoughts on him in his own thread.

I think Evans is going to be termed World Class very soon. SAF said it's a term that's misused a lot but, I think within a couple of years, we'll see this guy being linked for ridiculous amounts of money to other clubs.

This season so far Evans has had his ups and downs which I attribute to a few things:

1) Carrying a knock - I don't know how it is affecting mentally on the pitch but, if you are carrying a knock, am sure it has effect.

2) Inconsistency in defensive partners. Central Defenders need consistency - am sure can be said of any kinds of partnerships. Particularly for Evans, it depends who is partnered with - if it's with Rio then he needs to play with a "brute" central defender mindset. If it is with Vida or Brown then he is more of the ball playing type. At the San Siro a few times I think he got caught not sure what he was supposed to be doing. Along side Brown also this season, I think there is more uncertainty.

3) He is young. He still getting experience and there will be days/times when he doesn't remain calm under pressure or make the right decisions.

All that said - he is a fantastic defender. That clearance off the line against Pompey ... if that was JT, people would be talking about it being a world class defenders ability. What I see in him is that he is going to be like few others. He is going to have the ability to get absolutely stuck in, be the brute type defender but, also have the class to be a ball playing defender. Along side Rio and Vidic, he'll continue to master both sides of the game.

And the Kung Fu kick in my view has already made him a legend ;)

That clearance off the line against Pompey was class, it's great to see he has the awareness to drop away from the keepers line to cover that angle. It's not the first time he's done it either.

Young and learning, but doing a damn fine job of it.

when he's on the field i don't give him a thought. i worry more with rio and vid on the pitch with their form/injury history of late. defense-wise, raf's youth and evra's attacking cause me more worry than evans ever will.

Good post.

Read some utter nonsense especially from one tard "fan" who reckons he has been poor this season? :wenger:

future captain material in my eyes. Fantastic prospect.

How the feck did he get away with that? I'd forgotten that one haha.

I think Evans has a better partnership with Vidic than with Rio. The Rio - Vidic combination is unstoppable, though.

I think the injury issue is something that does play a part and is dismissed by many as reason for poor form - lets look at Rio when he was playing with his injury/recovering he looked out of form and seemed like he had lost a yard of pace, fast forward a few months and in his recent games he looks like the Rio of old (im not saying his injuries are a thing of the past but you feel he must have benefited from the improved condition to his back).

I think much is expected from the lad and rightly so, i do honestly believe he is going to develop to be something special

Evans is too similar to Ferdinand, which is why he suits Vidic better. It boggles my mind as to why people think that Evans suits Ferdinand better, in fact its doing him a disservice, because he's a ball playing defender, rather than a ball winner, although he does have the best of both worlds.

This why I am surprised that people are ok with losing Vida. Evans does well playing the ball winning role when paired with Rio but, his natural game is a ball playing CB. Even Smalling is, which is why I am really against losing Vida any time soon. Maybe in time Evans will become a more Vida type defender but, right now he is too similar to Rio. His best performances are when he is along side a Vidic or Brown.

Am still also waiting for his first goal - recall one that seemed legitimate that was disallowed and he's come close a few times. He needs to get one soon. Maybe it will be on Saturday.

That was at home against Chelsea last season. They ref and the linesman fecked up royally. It didn't really matter though as Vidic scored 30 secs after.

I think it was against Aston Villa or Spurs, could be wrong though.

That was Ronaldo...?

Yeah that was Ronaldo against Chelski on the short corner trickery. The one I am remembering is he got called for a foul and there wasn't anything in it, bugging me now.

Always thought Pique > him and it's turning out that way now, but long-term the additions to Evans' game is nearly peakless, as for Pique, maybe he's peaked (Read that out loud )

Vidic is World Class, Rio (Now) and Pique is the level below World Class, Evans the level below that, I have no name for it.

Evans is gonna be fecking quality in a couple of years. Despite his age he's a regular starter for one of the biggest teams in the world - and he's there purely on merit.

His reading of the game is exceptional for his age. He's not the quickest defender but you very rarely see him beaten for pace as he usually anticipates the play and takes up a solid position. And he's really assured on the ball... the variety of his passing is good and he looks as comfortable using his left foot as he does his right. Look at the amount of time he plays the ball with his left if you've never noticed it before, it's genuinely impressive.

Obviously he's gonna be prone to inconsistency here and there - name me a young player that doesn't suffer from the same thing - but for every performance like the one we saw against Milan, there's one like the one at the San Siro against Inter.

Like I said, in a couple of years he's gonna be one of the best centre backs around.

I completely agree. I think Evans and Pique are the two best defenders of their generation.

I've never seen a defender as good as him at his age. His awareness and ability at only 22 for a CB is superb. Even at 20 years old he was reading the game like a veteran at times.

I said 2 years ago that he was going to be worth £30m+. I was laughed away by other posters.

I remember talking about the Pique/Evans debate when he was sold I still think Evans a better defender then Pique for the Premier League.

I don't blame them though. Two years ago if you said that to Evans himself and he would have laughed at you.

wrong

the lad is a gem and still getting better. Rio and Vidic feck up more than is generally admitted but when Evans does it his ability is questioned. He's already proved himself for me. It's just a case of him getting even better.
