I thought Evans should be sold in the summer.

I thought Evans wouldn't hold up against Chelsea's attackers.

Glad he proved me wrong on both counts today. He had a great game. Looked confident and passed well under pressure.

I still wonder had Drogba had been healthy, whether things would have been different. I think Evans struggles with powerful, physical strikers.

He really excelled on what was only his second, maybe third, appearance for us against Drogba so I'm not sure he would've got much change out of him when he looked as assured as he did today. He really excels in big games.

He played well individually, but we're having quite a few communication/positioning issues at the back (though that's surely largely down to the inexperience and partial insanity of our defence).

He was caught out with his positioning two times during the whole game, as far as I could tell, and both were in the second half. First where he completely misjudged the trajectory of the ball to let it go to Torres, but Phil Jones did excellent covering him.

The second time was when Torres was clean through and missed the sitter, where I thought he was dragged out a little too easy by Torres to open the space for that pass.

Other than that, I thought he was absolutely brilliant, especially in the first half where he was flawless in my opinion. Very assured and composed with the ball, and showed a passing game I would have thought was above his station.

Also liked how he let Carrick have it when he'd just outsmarted their first line of defence only for Carrick to respond to his pass by giving it back to De Gea with no pressure at all.

Great to see him become the defensive leader in such an inexperienced defence, it's still a concern for me that Evra isn't doing that.

Jones was the vocal one today which looks great for the future, but Evans showed him how it's done. Chelsea play the offside trap better than anyone at times so it was inevitable they would break through once or twice, but a great job on the whole.

Played a stormer. Starting to look really confident carrying the ball out of defence too. Torres was looking back to his best but got very little change out of him. I thought Evans could only defend against 5 foot tall weaklings?
I doubt you'd be saying that if Torres had put away the other three golden chances he had.

Got turned way too much for my liking, was out of position a few times. He did ok, but not as great as some claim

He did well today in my opinion. Fair play to him.

Not perfect but a decent performance.

What are you talking about? Torres did score one of his two really good chances. Both of which involved a really well-time run and a quality pass. That happens, you know. Top strikers beating an off-side trap. As an Arsenal fan, you're more familiar with this than most.

Doesn't take away from Evans' very good performance, mind you.

I would go along with that. He was good on the ball, looked confident and his passing was very good, but that has never been in question with him, that is his strong point. Don't think he was really tested aerially, physically or isolated in a 1 v 1 situation. Away to stoke will be a sterner test for him, and with Rio, Vidic, Smalling and Jones all potentially missing with injury, whether you rate him or not, we will be relying on him. Here's hoping he is up to all the messy shit stoke have to throw at us.

I've been very critical of his distribution of the ball in the past but so far this season it's been far better than in previous seasons. He's doing well at the moment in our re-shaped defence, not perfect by any means but well enough to earn a starting position on merit.

Im not sure about Evans, he has himself admitted that he needs to up his game. Some of his positional awareness hasnt been great. He looks off the pace and needs an experienced head alongside him. He seems to have momentary lapses which get us into trouble.

Evra as the 'senior' player in the backline needs to give him more support and encouragement.

The two things that bothered me was the Ramires open goal chance he did not even attempt to run. He just stopped when Torres got the ball. It was the 27th minute.

And that Torres miss chance too, he had his back to Torres, which I thought was very bad positioning. His pass to Nani was brilliant which ultimately led to the second goal. He is fifth choice center back for us without a question.

Rio/Smalling
Evans.

Giving it large to Carrick for a back pass was unwarranted. Didn't think it was necessary to berate a team mate for retaining the ball and taking the sting from the game. You can't really do that when you produce the form that Evans has over the last twelve months...

I disagree and I am glad to see our youngsters having the confidence to crticise their more senior teammates. With the backpass, carrick wasted what could have been a good opportunity to break and get at Chelsea.

Overall I thought Evans had a good game - the passing was superb and whilst he got caught out once or twice in defence, that happens when you play against a top team. I felt our midfield didn't look anything like as good as it has done with cleverley in - which is both a good and bad thing, but I'm a bit concerned for squad depth in midfield.

It's always difficult to judge a player on a screen but after the second time I watched the game it's obvious that Evans struggled with his position and a couple of times he ended up in no mans land.

To be fair to him he was not the only one who struggled with this. Evra, Anderson and Fletcher where also part of our weak defense. Our midfielders didn't track back the way they should and Ando's passing was sometime's shocking. And it must be notice'd that when Chelsea counter attacked Evra was often out of position and he also tracked back quite lazy and left Evans alone and outnumbered.

Evans is a quality player but there are much to improve. Hopefully he will sort this out sooner or later because we need him at his best.

Easy to forget that Evra aside, we played kids in defence against one of the best teams in the league. We had some luck but restricting Torres and co to only one goal is pretty good.

Thought he was very good yesterday. good to see him getting over his last season. on form, he's a very hand player to have..

Evans.

I've only seen the game once tbf, but I was sure it was Jones and Evra that just stopped in the box and didn't pick up the two players in front of them waiting to just knock it into an open goal.

As for Evans, I thought he controlled our defence yesterday and was the main man in the back 4. Excellent prospect.

United's back 5 have hardly played more than a few matches together so it's hardly surprising we have some nervous moments. The way the game was played Chelsea's high profile defenders also got a run around, conceded 3 goals and should have been more had it not been for some wayward finishing. The game was just too open to be judging any defensive performances.

Never mind the defence not getting any help from our mid-fielders - defenders themselves were wanting a slice of the action further up the pitch...

Honestly I thought our defensive play in general was appalling. But a big part of the blame lies with the midfield for sometimes giving Chelsea a free run into the final third. Evans did as well as could be expected, actually the back four generally did well. The midfield on the other hand was a tad worrying.

No Jones was the one covering Torres and Evra was trying his best to come in from the left wing to cover but it was Evans' duty to cover the middle.

Evans had a decent game. Not particularly commanding, but he did a decent job at centre back, althought it became clear that he was quite content to leave Torres for Jones to handle, which is fine by me cause Jones is by far the better defender in all departments.

Played well yesterday.

Glad he critisised the carrick pass it was warranted and also correct. The pressure it caused led to Chelsea getting the ball back a creating a chance.

Also it was a period of pressure where we finally had created a chance to relieve it yet instead carrick put us back in danger.

Funny, I could've swore that his first few games for us he was criticized for hoofing it up and praised for being dominant in the air.

Of course, I now remember getting furious with him putting his hand up looking for an offside to be called instead of getting back into position.

Still a commanding performance, his tackle on Torres in the first 10 minutes was top class.

He did get caught out of position a couple of times. But he also saved Jones' butt three or four times when Jones let one of the Chelsea attackers get in behind him, only for Evans to swoop across and shut down the opportunity. Did the same for Evra at least once as well.

He was our best player in the 1st half IMO, second best over the course of the match.

What we have to remember is right now evans is the elder statesman with evra at the back. Hard to believe. He's only 23. We need to be patient with him
