Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Evans in the team instantly makes our attack better due to his runs and distribution. However, I don't know if that is enough to make up for the defensive solidarity Vidic and Rio provide.

I don't think he's injured, Moyes doesn't rate him and tbh I don't blame him, we do not defend well when under pressure with Evans in the team. This talk about distribution from the back, it's the players in front of the back 4 that are static. Towards the end of today's game , Rio was looking for an option forward and even put his hands up to say, show me something but nothing was on and had to go backwards. Believe me we do not miss Evans.

Don't worry nobody believes you.

Utter tripe as per usual

He's supposed to be playing for Northern Ireland tomorrow, so not sure about any potential injuries.

I think I'd have him with one of Rio or Vidic now when full fit again. I don't see defence frailty as a problem any more. Perhaps give himself and Vidic another run of games.

He recovered just a week ago or so, he was defintely injured for first two games.

Evans was class. Defended very well. He should be a starter alongside Ferdinand or Vidic IMO.

Evans is total class. This will likely be Ferdinand's last season, so I'd like to see Evans and Jones get as many games as possible this season alongside Vidic (who should be our ever present). I absolutely rate Ferdinand as one of our greatest ever signings but his declining mobility has definitely diminished his ability to move out from the back. Huge influence at the club and in the dressing room, so I am glad he has stuck around for at least another season. Must be inspirational to the likes of Jones too. Smalling is currently 5th choice, but given the talent ahead of him, that is no shame. I rate him highly.

Was he? Didn't see much of him in the highlights. Who was marking Ronnie for the two headers?
For the first headed goal, Evans wasn't marking Ronaldo. For Ronaldo's second goal, it's harsh to blame him because he had to deal with two attackers. It was a 2 v 1 situation because his partner lost his concentration. Harsh to blame him, but also - you could make a case that he should have won the header. Still, it was a very good performance. Last year, he also was outstanding in Portugal with Ireland.

I think he also got the assist for the goal that put them 2-1 up (a header from a corner).
Hope he's in beast mode at corners again for us this season :D

I wasn't blaming him, I honestly didn't know who was marking Ronnie. I'm Jonny's biggest fan on here in all likelihood.

Don't know how someone can still doubt his ability and class?

He's had some mistakes in the past, but that was all part of learning your trade at the very top football level.

I adore Rio, but would rather prefer Evans-Vidić combination at the back.

I'll make a match comp of his performance vs. Portugal if anyone's interested?

One thing I noticed about Moyes is his reluctance to rotate .. I would have been sure SAF would have already put in 3 different set of defense in the last 3 games we had .. Injuries, not knowing the team well could be the reasons ..

Vidic and Ferdinand have been defending very well. There is no reason to rotate. Also there have been adequate gaps between the 3 matches.

Once the European campaign starts I'm sure we will see a lot more rotation.

Same as last year. People always worry about some players not playing early on then eventually those fears are swatted aside. Patience is always key.

The difficulty of the games will have played it's part too. I'm pretty sure Fergie would've went with Rio and Vidic in games against Liverpool and Chelsea.

evans alongside either vidic or rio is fine for us. evans has proven his class over the last couple of seasons now. he had a great start to his united career until that one season where he struggled badly. since then he has bounced back and is getting stronger than ever. he is also at the right age now, being in his mid twenties. i'm sure we will see the best of evans for years to come. he is also without a doubt our best ball playing defender at his moment. his distribution is top class.

Come on, it's just been three games (4 if you wanna add the CS).

By far the best passing and footballing central defender that we have. This becomes even more crucial when teams push up on Carrick and crowd the space in the middle. He should be first choice with Vidic.

Had problems with the footage - second half wasn't displaying on Sony Vegas - so I've only made a match compilation of his first half performance. Apologies all.

Also, look who made the bench:

So much hoofing from both sides. You should make video from one his performances for United.

He did a lot of organising there and everything else seemed done to perfection. I would have liked to have seen the second half when Portugal scored 3 to see how he was though.

Thanks for that MM. Should deffo do a united game sometime.

I'll definitely be making an end of season compilation. I'll also make a number of match comps when he starts playing for the first team again. Still, a very underrated player. Some of the passes he made against Portugal were great. He tends not to submit to pressure and hoof it like Vidic and he certainly doesn't need a lot of time to pick out a pass, unlike Ferdinand.

There was one pass in that video he made from almost a Left Back position, a first time ball over the top which was great. Unfortunately the forwards were all off-side but still a great piece of vision and execution.

Yeah, it was an immense pass. The linesman didn't give the offside - Ireland received a corner, so the beautiful pass counted. :D

Great to see him back. Personally thought Smalling was better, but Jonny was solid.
