Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Good to hear he played well, I would like to see him partner Vidic in the next game, allowing Rio to get a decent rest.
After this performance and Rio's previous two performances, I think that is a good chance, especially against Albion at home. In saying that, Smalling didn't do his chances any harm either, he was great too.

One thing which is becoming more and more apparent is that there's no central defender in the United's first team squad right now which comes close to Evans distribution. He's just very good with the ball distribution.

Very good on the ball but Smalling had the better game. Thought Smalling was outstanding. Evans looked a bit lacking in match fitness which is to be expected.

I'd agree with that.

After watching Rio's horror show against City, it was reassuring to see both of them play very well.

Yeah I agree, and he's so calm on the ball as well, Rio and Vidic just don't seem as comfortable on the ball as they used to.

Evans better for me - Smalling has these 2-3 moments in each game. Like when he passed the ball straight to Liverpool 25 yards from his own goal - or when let Suarez glide past him and ran next to him for like 25-30 yards rather than pushing him to the ground preventing a dangerous counter-attack.

And I trust Evans on the ball - with Smalling anything can happen

It's true I forgot about the Smalling horror pass.

I felt Evans had one or two moments himself though, like when he was fooled by the Enrique pass to Suarez, or when he let Suarez take him out towards the end. Both instances led to huge chances.

I felt Smalling had several absolutely excellent pieces of defending - even more so than Evans.

, he was pretty ordinary and let him and Sturridge in a few times. He has proven he needs 5-6 games to get going in the past.

glad he has return, and did well too.

with rio's form at the moment, to have evans back is great news. smalling was superb at CB as well.

maybe rio needs a bit of a break now, for a few matches just to get his usual game back.

Rio definitely needs a rest. Just look at how much sharper Giggs looked after a couple of weeks off. Rio needs that care these days - Moyes should have known that.

That was a very good performance and highlighted a lot of what his fans have been saying about him for a long time. Only misplaced one pass that I could count and only hit the long ball when it was needed. Bossed the defence nicely and for a man that hasn't played football yet this season he didn't really make many mistakes. The shot Toure had could maybe be classed as a mistake but if he wasn't able to get himself in that position in the first place they would have easily scored. The one on the sideline was a foul from Suarez too but he could maybe have been stronger.

The moment at 1.45 highlights how exceptional his movement and reading of the game has gotten.

Thanks MM.

I remembered the performance more favourably than that comp! Still deserves a run in the first team now imo.

Moyes has made some errors in his team selections early on and Evans is certainly one of them

its difficult to think of a game (for me anyway) where he has had a poor game in the last year or so

I also think he is a big game player and seems to perform well in the games vrs Liverpool/Chelsea

Really? I thought that comp showed how well he played so you must have thought he was completely amazballs if that's lessened your opinion of him.

Weird how this attribute can appear/ disappear from a centre-half's repetoire. Jonny used to be pretty shite with the ball at his feet. Used to delay and delay till everything closed up. So comfortable now and even incisive at times. Rio, on the other hand, for a man so happy in possession in the past, can't seem to consistently find a red shirt. Makes all the difference, doesn't it? If you have a centre-half who keeps possession, I mean.

Ferdinand has made major mistakes vs Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen, Crystal Palace, and Manchester City.
Yes, he has made mistakes. Has he been dreadful over the whole period of those games this season? No.

That's not the point. He was awful vs. Manchester City, which is arguably his worst game in 2013. When a player makes major mistakes that result to clear-cut chances, then you simply can't overlook this. Added to this is the weak and slow lateral movement of Ferdinand these days. Evans is the better defender and has been since the beginning of the 11/12 season. Ferdinand had the better season last season, but had Evans played more - he would have been on par. Playing with Evans also allows us to play a high line, there are many positives really that overpower Ferdinand.

Well, it was the point in reference to the point I was referring to that someone else made.

I never overlooked anything. I never said don't play Evans, if you read my posts in here, you would find that I am a huge fan and was one of his backers when he came through the system. I just think it's harsh to label Rio dreadful this season. Young, yes, Rio, no.

He's cost us points moreso than anyone else in the back four. I think a lot of that may have to do with him being over played though.
The ball has to get there first. I'm not hiding away from the fact that he has been poor at times and made errors, I'm just not going to label him dreadful.

Keeps possession and is happy to way for the right pass. Yeah guess it's one of those things, once you get the confidence, plus guess we dunno if he's really been working on it. It's sort of like getting a goal, it just wasn't happening for him for a while and now he looks a big threat each time he goes up for one. I suppose with Rio it's more than doubt that creeps in to your mind about being able to play your way out of trouble after a loss in pace etc.

Has to be loss of pace for Rio. Evans reminds me of Rio at his peak (in terms of comfort on the ball and spraying the passes). I think Evans might be even better with the long passes.

Yeah he could be, and seems more comfortable with both feet.

He's a classy defender but he really struggles against these 'back-to-goal' strikers.
