Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Anybody else think he'd be a brilliant fit at Barcelona? His composure on the ball and his ability to read the game aren't any worse than Pique's, in my opinion.

You won't find much neutrals who've recognized his abilities as of yet. He's still got that not a foreign United squad player so must be quite average -stigma attached.

I asked a few mates earlier who would ya prefer, Johnny boy or Piqué.

They all opted for Pique, am I being mental saying I'd rather Johnny Boy?

I don't think so, it's hard to judge who is the best because I do believe Pique is very talented but let's be honest how often is he tested in that Barca team? And Spain is very similar, I don't think he would do any better in another side than Evans does for us and Evans would have no trouble slotting into that Barca team.

Carrick, Rooney, Fletcher, Evans. A long line cos that's just naming a few.

Hard to judge at the moment because Pique can't seem to get out of this long spell of poor form for more than a couple of games at a time. Right now I'd take Evans, but over their careers Pique has obviously been better. A key figure in one of the best club sides of all time.

Fair play to Jonny this season, absolutely delighted for him, as one of his biggest critics during his inconsistent spell I take my hat off to him, I can only remember one instance where he looked vulnerable this season, he was superb, "manned up" big time, scored some goals (always a bonus) and looked confident, vocal on the pitch too. Well done fella.

Did anyone see Welbeck and Evans commentating on the official site. Bit of a laugh him takin the piss out of Danny .

He is ridiculously good with the ball at his feet, he doesn't care if anyone is pressing him, he always has a good option.

Evans is getting married today to Helen McDonell. Congratulations to him, and I hope he'll kick on after a good season.

Good luck Jonny

well in Jonny... you look as good on your wedding day as the day you drop kicked Drogba

Poor Jonny's probably thinking where's them feckin' potatoes.

Don't you hate it when you turn up at the restaurant and all your mates are wearing the same polo shirt as you.

JONNY EVANS PUTTING IN THE HARD YARDS AS NEW MAN UTD ERA DAWNS

Jonny Evans has become a football obsessive in order to make sure he does not get left behind in the battle for a first-team spot at Manchester United.

Since the severity of Rio Ferdinand's muscular complaints first began to surface in 2008, Evans has gradually edged further up the Red Devils hierarchy.

By last season, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he regarded Evans as a first-choice member of his side, with Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic his partner depending upon the opponent.
Yet, with Phil Jones also earmarked for a central defensive slot and Chris Smalling good enough to play for England in that position, Evans accepts he can take nothing for granted.

And, speaking during United's current tour of the Far East and Australia, the Northern Ireland international outlined the work that has to be done to remain in contention at Old Trafford.
"For me, the last couple of years has been about learning how to live right off the pitch," he said. "My focus has been solely about football. When I wake up in the morning it is the first thing I think about.
"I take time and think about how I am going to improve. "It becomes an obsession. I get up two hours earlier than I used to. I get into training earlier and go to the gym.
"I understand there is a fine line. I like to play golf. I like to spend time with my wife. I don't overkill it. As soon as I have finished training I try and relax. "But I have a routine which I have worked hard at and which works for me."

Evans recoils slightly when it is mentioned such focus is similar to that of former team-mate Gary Neville. Yet single-mindedness and dedication are traits to be admired in an era where so many players are prepared to settle for something less than their best because the trappings of stardom have already arrived.

"The way I look at it is if I didn't do that stuff I might not still be at Manchester United," he said. "When I see people working hard and putting the effort in I think 'fair play'. Others might think it is being busy or you are doing stupid work but it gives you a mental edge."
Never has that approach been needed more than this season, when United's squad are having to adjust to seismic change. Prior to this summer there had never been a point in Evans' entire life when Ferguson was not United manager.

As a fan of the game it has taken some getting used to. As a player it brings an element of the unknown. For instance, Ferguson's way of managing his squad was not only to ensure everyone got games, but those matches were meaningful, so, with the odd exception, a team selection could not be predicted.

"Unless it was Robin van Persie or Cristiano Ronaldo when he was here, there was never a first choice in any position," said Evans. "If you didn't perform he would have you out of the team, but then if one of the other players had a game or two when they weren't at their best the manager would have no problem putting you back in.

"The key thing was whenever he picked a team you always thought he was doing it for a reason, not because of any personal vendetta or that he didn't rate you. Now we don't know how the new manager will work. That is why everyone is so desperate to impress."

Life after Fergie
Reports from a number of sources that the players are enjoying their work under Moyes are significant. For, as Evans testifies, it will take the entire group to manage the transition, not one part of it.
"It all has to come together," said Evans. "The players have to buy into what the manager is doing. The players didn't just go out and win the league last season. We had the coaching staff, the manager, the masseurs, everyone. You are literally spending every single day together. You have that bond."

The start of Moyes' reign could not be much tougher, with those fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City looming straight after an opening-day trip to Swansea.
It has been openly debated outside the club what pressure would be exerted on Moyes should those results go badly. Evans offers a different perspective. "Whenever we have had a batch of tough fixtures in the past we have done really well and come out of them in strong positions," he said.
"At Manchester United, you have to win every game, no matter what the opponent. That is the way it is here. Even if things don't go as planned it is still early in the season. "We have been there before. We lost our first game against Everton last year and still won the league by 11 points."

One of the things I noticed when I see training pics of United is that Rio and Jonny are always at the front in the runs. Always. It's a telling thing actually as that is usually the guys who train the best and the hardest and the guys who set an example. Delighted he has this attitude.

Thought I would bump this.

I think we missed Evans's ability to bring the ball out of defence today and his passing as well as the fact that he is more mobile than both Rio and Vida. Rio and Vidic are solid defenders but due to their age they really are reluctant to go to far with the ball and both go long very often. Fergie was selecting one of them with Evans last season and I think for the cohesion of our play that is the better way to go. For all the criticism, Carrick and Cleverley got today, they are not helped by Vida and Rio as a pairing, despite how solid both are.

Is he injured? Not heard anything about him since the pre-season games.

I don't think he's injured, Moyes doesn't rate him and tbh I don't blame him, we do not defend well when under pressure with Evans in the team. This talk about distribution from the back, it's the players in front of the back 4 that are static. Towards the end of today's game , Rio was looking for an option forward and even put his hands up to say, show me something but nothing was on and had to go backwards. Believe me we do not miss Evans.

Evans has been injured, from the last game of pre-season. There is no way he wouldn't be on the team, considering that Smalling is there.

And Evans has been brilliant in the last two seasons, as good as Rio. His passing is on another level to Rio/Vidic.

Moyes himself said everybody was fit other than rafael on Thursday (pre Rooney injury).

I prefer a jones and Smalling to Evans at the defending part of being a defender!

He hasn't featured at all yet has he under Moyes?

Has he been injured?
