Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

His calmness on the ball really adds something imo. In recent times I think Vidic and Rio haven't seemed as comfortable on the ball as we've seen before from them. Hopefully gets more times.

We definately need his calmness on the ball and pass it out from the defense. As many have said, Rio hoofs it up too much.

If people on here say him and smalling where close I know Evans must have been amazing to get people over his prejudice. Not any of you like! ;)

Very rusty and performance was a mixed bag, some good and not so good defending. Needs to be more aggressive at times.

 Nah the caf in general loves Evans now. Back in 2011/12 it was bad but he's rated highly now I think.

He was really bad in 2010/2011, never looked back since then. He's a big game player, and he'll replace Rio for in the coming weeks hopefully.

Yeah definitely, the thing with 11/12 is that's when he had the City game when we lost 6-1 and he got sent off.

Evans's best ever season with us was 11/12 IMO (remember voting him Player of the Season in the Caf thread) but that City game took ages to be forgiven by plenty on here.

Massive performance by Evans. Moyes really has a tough decision at CB.

I don't think he was that great today tbf, he can do play much better than this, Smalling was much better IMO. It wasn't poor performance though, he was good, but nothing more than you would expect from player in his first start of season.
Great to have him back.

Overall I think he's our best CB. Not as commanding as Vidic but his composure and passing is miles better.

Had some dodgy moments tonight, was good attacking the ball in the air in Vidic's absence. Overall I stopped wondering why Rio was being picked

He was solid and deadly today. Immense at the bank and defended his territory very well. Kind of like a snake. Johnny Ekans!

I actually thought both him and Smalling had some dodgy moments - poor clearances from the latter, some dubious timing from the former. To be expected, of course - bit rusty, haven't played together for a while, nothing to worry about. Evans is already a very good CB and he will get even better. Rio should be used sparingly now, I think Moyes would be wise to go for Evans and Vidic as the main pair.

I thought both of them were brilliant considering the protection they had in front of them until Carrick came on.

What impressed me the most and doesn't seem to have been mentioned is how much of a leader he was at the back. He was very vocal and screaming his orders across to the other defenders and that's an important quality to have at the back.

I think Smalling had a bit of luck with one or two of his connections on crosses but other than that coped better defensively, by a fair bit too. Evans was good in the air but he had several individual mistakes like losing the confrontation with Suarez

That was a foul.

Love how he is such a composed, technical defender. But at the same time can really tough it up. Saw one corner, he just made a direct run for Toure and went through him. Takes no shit from anyone.

Yeah, that was the one which stood out - but then again it's the sort of situation that does stand out, ain't it? And it's attributable to being a bit off the pace - nothing too severe.

Expectedly a bit rusty, but he definitely grew in confidence as the game went on. Love to see him get a run in the team now.

Delighted to have him back. Has been my personal favorite at CB for some reason ever since I saw him against Inter away in 2008/09 season. Wasn't his best self today but still a very good performance. Smalling was huge as well, we are probably the best in Europe in terms of centre back position's depth.

It's not too long ago that twats on here were complaining that he had the audacity to be shouting at other players.

Good to hear he played well, I would like to see him partner Vidic in the next game, allowing Rio to get a decent rest.
