Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Evans has, at the very least, proven he is worthy of a long-term future with us. I'm not sure if he has necessarily reached a level where he has guaranteed himself to be a long-term regular though, but he has a chance.

If young central defenders were some on sort of stock-market though, I'd be buying shares in Chris Smalling.

Of course it does, most clubs in the world play in lower divisions in countries far inferior to England in footballing terms. Unless it's qualified with something like "Most CL Clubs" or "Most clubs in the world's top Leagues" then it's completely meaningless praise.

By most clubs, I do mean that. Hardly any of the top CL clubs has 2 centre backs better than him currently.

really......My god he isnt not that good.

Go ahead and name centrebacks who have played better than him this season. There won't be many.

I got some flak when I suggested Evans would be a starter for most clubs around the world a month or two back. I still hold the same opinion, his performance this season so far is as good as any other defender in the world right now.

Dortmund no, Real Madrid no, Barcelona no, Bayern no, Juventus no. There are five big clubs that Evans would not start for.

There are a few arguable ones, if you know what I mean. He's developing into a fine defender but statements like yours aggravate the credibility of this thread from time to time. United have been defending poorly as a team all season with only a slight improvement recently (spoiled partially by today.)
Jonny has been impressive on the ball and has improved his goals tally, but for me he isn't defending as well as he was during the second half of last season. Mind you neither is anyone else so he isn't isolated there.

Pique & Hummels have been terrific this season. Barzagli & Chiellini have also been outstanding for Juventus. The pair at Bayern, Badstuber & Dante have been solid....I think Bayern have only conceded 7 goals in the league. They have all been better than Evans.

Anyone else surprised he was dropped today?

Yeah. This is our standard now when we want to drop players we say they are injured. Same thing happened with Nani who hasn't been injured, just Fergie not wanting people to know he drops players.

That's a different Jonny Evans. They have the same name though which explains your confusion.

Amazing boss like performance. Some of the blocks in the second half were mental stuff. In him and Smalling we have an oustanding CB pairing for the futur

He took a big risk in the first half by holding Rodallega, should stop that, could with a ref like Mike Dean have been sent off.

Apart from that, top class.

The way he plucked that Rodellaga pass out the air whilst running back was magnificent.

He was shocking the first 10mins but second half he was brilliant. Saved us on a couple of occassions but looked like a hamstring at the end

Very good performance but he looked to be hobbling at the end. Hopefully nothing serious.

Can't agree at all.
His runs forward got us into dangerous situations more than once. He's too optimistic with his game at times leaving a big gap at the back.

Not a bad peformance as he did well aerially and played some good passes but he really has to keep it more simple at the back at times

Bossed it. I think that was the best game by any of our center backs this season.

That's massive exaggeration, it wasn't even his best performance. Was ok at best in the first half but had a good second half. Ferdinand was better

Yeah he was. Still by the end of the game he proved to me why Jones can't start ahead of him yet.

If someone was to blamed for dangerous forward runs, it definitely was Rio.

Not an exaggeration at all. He made I think 3 sloppy passes in first 10 minutes other than that everything he did was to perfection. Positionally was sensational, attacked and won the headers and distributed the ball excellently. What would you have expected him to do better, honestly ?

To suggest it was the best game by any of our Cb's this season is just not true.

Nah Evans got caught in position numerous times from what I saw. Don't think it was Rio but if so then I stand corrected.
His blocks were very good but still, if it was him with those runs forward, he really should have done better there.

I hope more of us realise how vital Evans is to how we play. Because he's comfortable on the ball and has good vision, he's another outlet to use when the opposition push up on our midfield. How he handled himself in tight situations was phenomenal. We really missed a player with those qualities when he was out. Means we are less prone to hoofing the ball.

Defensively, superb. Someone get a gif of him plucking out that pass to Rodallega. It was a class performance and I hope he'll be alright.

I don't know man, I gotta admit that I'm a bit biased here since I'm a big Evans fan.Maybe another viewing of the match with absolutely zero nail biting would help me see things better

Always my first choice CB personally, he's had a very good season and hopefully he gets the run in the team he deserves even with Vidic back.

He was fantastic.

Bit worried that he was limping at the end.
Fantastic..... not the game I saw. He did well but was as shaky as the rest in the end. Can't see him as a future rock of our defense, good but not as Rio and Vidic.

Great performance from him. Brought the ball out of defence very well at times. Plus plenty of key tackles, intersections and clearances from him. Was right up there for best on ground
