Him and Hummels are similar in their calmness and poise. Classy touch there. Very few CBs can pull off a touch like that. Seems like you have to be a fully accomplished defender to be appreciated for something like that. As if it makes for a better narrative.

Just a question now of whether Smalling or Jones becomes his main CB partner in a couple of years time as I think he's established himself as the next main CB.

Thats quite a comparison.

Fantastic to see him so composed and utterly confident. He will take the reins without any problems at all. He is the perfect example of why North and South habe got to be one in the footy at long last.

Make it happen Jonny lol

Johnny Evans could be compared to De Gea as everyone hasnt given him chance. Yet Evans has kept his head down and worked hard on his game and when he has been in the team he looks very composed on the ball and makes intelligent decisions.

I see him as a future CB for many years to come at Manchester United.

keep your sodding politics out of the United forum. Go and look up this topic in the Football forum, its been done to death

oh and Jonny wouldnt be the one to make it happen either, hes an NI man through and through

Sheesh - Evans has been excellent this season. I wouldn't say he's completely filled in for Vida but, to say he has failed is just poor journalism. Guess he had to fill that section up some how. Anyone watching United this season has to say Tony V. performances have been the most disappointing given what a beast he has been.

I wonder who has been the biggest disappointment though? Valencia, probably.

Whoever it is, it's definitely not Evans.

I threw him under the bus after the City red card and now he has made me look silly.

Well done Evans.

I'd argue Welbeck as a second place.

Not because he has necessarily been bad, he's put in some rather good performances, especially recently, but I guess after his last season this would be the one where we would have hoped he'd really have pushed on and (mostly for reasons outside of his control, but also because of some that are within his) it hasn't panned out that way.

Yep. Would be very harsh on him if he's dropped for the Madrid game.

Picking 2 out of Rio, Vidic, Evans and Smalling. Picking 2 out of Wayne, RVP, Hernandez and Welbeck. Are we spoilt for choice or what ?

On current form and taking into account this season, Evans has been our best defender.

For the Real game i would play Evans/Vidic as my centre back pairing, also it would be a kick in the teeth for him to be rested in a big game as such as this.

It could be Evans and Rio for the Real game.

I'm basing this on 2 reasons, firstly Vidic played on Sunday and secondly his lack of pace as i suspect Benzema and Ronaldo will be playing and both are very quick.

Who'll be on Ronaldo at Corners and when he makes those Diagonal runs cutting in with Di Maria crossing ?

There are pro and cons either way.

At one point yesterday, he managed a beautiful cross field pass after a small burst out of defence, towards Valencia I think (or could've been RvP hogging the touchline), it was superb. He's been very very good this season, really matured as a player.

Rios still our best defender in big games, the fact we rested him Sunday is testament to this. I think Evans will get a start too, Vidic is amazing at backs to the walls defending but unless we plan on playing a deep line I don't see him starting as he's not back to what he was pre-injury just yet.

Yesterday was so far one of his best games. Finally he looks naturally confident and plays with a senior players authority. Sometimes a confident approach can be the difference and yesterday I saw a future starter in him.

Rio will surely play due on his form and experience. Still, I wouldnt have a problem with Evans at all if he starts

Playing against Madrid would be the next test for him to see what level hes at. Come through it impressively and I'm sure he'd secure his first team spot

Harsh on Evans if he's dropped, but it's a tough one. Chicharito goes through it all the time though.

Whoever SAF deems our best XI is against Madrid should start.

Most of our players, defenders especially, are coming into form at this moment.

Want him in. Himself and Vidic look infinitely more convincing as a partnership than they did 2 years ago.

I just can't see Vidic not starting. I know some of you think it'll be Rio and evans but I can't see it. IMO it'll be Vidic ***. The fact Rio got a rest probably means it'll be him and I wouldn't have a problem with that especially over there. In OT Evans may get his chance.

I think the fact that SAF subbed Evans would suggest that he was the CB he wanted to save for the Madrid game midweek, the defence played so well on sunday though that I would be happy for us to stick with the same back 5.

Evans I feel is good enough to play the Madrid game, and him being subbed did point to that being a possibility. Though Rio being rested and Vidic playing like a beast in the last game may push SAF to select them and leave Evans out in this game.

It really is good to have this sort of issue at the moment. All three can come in and do a very good job, then we have smalling as well pushing them for a spot. At a guess I can see Rio/Vidic starting away against Madird, but evans being one of the CB for the home leg.
