John Stones

my favorite player to watch in the league, its unreal how good he is under pressure.
We should pay what they want for him, we will overpay but id rather overpay for a top talent(Shaw, Martial) then buy some average clown(Fellaini, Rojo) that will also be overpaid and based on our transfer policy you just know that will happen....

Has he ever been caught out doing those stupid turns in his own box? There's being a ball playing defender and there's being a bit silly in the 90th minute.

That turn isn't that good though really.A quicker attacker would have robbed that.

Not a bad idea. We could still get our man whilst not disrupting Everton's season that much. Hope we don't start pissing about over the fee too much, he is gonna cost £50m, so just offer that and show our intent, and get it done.
Stones for 50m pounds (or 70m euros) would be incredible, and not in a good way.

If you can play with too much confidence, that was an example of it.

I'm surprised to hear that. You have an exciting and dynamic young team, wouldn't he be a huge asset over the next decade to help you break into the top tier of the league? That's worth more than money.
I agree with Dunc. Both Stones and Lukaku don't want to be at Everton for the long term and though they're a freescoring team, they concede too many goals and can't see them finishing close to the top four for a while unless maybe Martinez gets some help with the defensive side of things.

Everton want to move to a new stadium at some point and are notorious for struggling with money as it is. A lot of the money they get from the increased TV deals will probably go towards that or to pay any debts they owe.

I think long term they'd be best selling Stones for £50M if they do get an offer of that much, and use the money towards a replacement CB, a quality DM and maybe some towards a good young goalkeeper. There are a few out there. Think that'd help them more than keeping him.

Wake up mate. No one will join Liverpool when City or Chelsea also make an offer. Players don't really care which team has great history but rather where they can be the most successful right now

I think for players from these shores, it does matter. Some players do not want to be playing their football in Spain or Italy. I would agree about foreign players though.

Not for guys like Stones who grew up as a kid watching Chelsea/Arsenal/United win. Liverpool are less relevant now bar the old guys not playing constantly and obnoxiously shoving things that happened 30 years a go in your face.

Looked like he snapped back at the crowd there too. Actually love the confidence.

Yeah, he looked genuinely pissed off with the crowd, sometimes we think we know best as fans but a pro knows keeping possession of the ball is the key.

I think he is fast outgrowing Everton in the same way Lukaku is. I've noticed he's started throwing his arms around in frustration a lot, that's usually a sign a player doesn't appreciate a teammate. Funny thing is, Cleverley seems to be on the receiving end, more than others. Surprise, surprise.

Outgrowing Everton, if he carried on with his form of late he would of looked on being benched once Jags was fit, he played well today though.

He like Rio will make mistakes it's how he learns. His defending is suspect at times but again hopefully he learns!

What's your view on Lukaku?

Has he always behaved toward his teammates like that?

Lukaku on the other hand has clearly outgrown Everton and sadly not even the huge we receive will be enough to replace him.

The kids a winner, he can be a bit stroppy at times but it's because he wants to win football matches, I don't really have a issue plus if we are going to pander to anyone it's him

Lukaku outgrew Everton the minute he hired Raiola.

Though Barkley's class it must be a bit frustrating for Lukaku having him as a CAM sometimes.
It can be like today at the end when a better pass to Lukaku and he was in. He has really improved a lot in that regard this season though and I expect him to carry on improving.

As much as I would welcome John Stones at United I really need convincing that he would gel with Smalling, both like to play on the right of a centre back partnership and I would worry that they would'nt compliment each other. For me Stones is a must buy, but it may mean we still need another (left sided) CB.

Must buy.

It's simple as that.

I think all of the big PL teams will be sniffing for him this summer.

Fair point.

Can anyone recall, have Smalling and Stones played together for England? If so how did they do?

Didn't Vidic play both sides of the CB partnership and do well? I recall him playing on the left with Rio and on the right with Evans without looking out of place on either occasion.

We aren't signing Vidic though, I think that is why someone is asking if him and Smalling have played together for England and who played on the left.

I was under the impression that Stones is a bit more technically accomplished on the ball than Vidic so that should be a bit easier for him. Its not like someone is going to sit on his right foot and press him to use his left all the time.

With 50 million and a good scouting system you can retool the entire spine of a side.
this isnt a gareth bale calibre matchwinning machine he's an extremely talented centre back, who at a club like everton is replaceable.

I would argue Lukaku is the one everton will struggle to replace.

Agree.

Totally agree, as good as I think he will become the fact is 50m will be a record fee for a defender or there abouts for a reason. Lukakus importance to this team is on another level, Everton would be worse of with accepting 70 million for Lukaku because we simply won't attract a player as good as him for long time.

Have'nt seen too much of him, watched the game today, seen him turn towards his own goal with the ball late on where he should have launched it, cringe moment.

At the present moment, Stones is overrated as feck because people seem to think he's at the level of 30m player already which he simply isn't. Without Everton's best defender (Phil Jagielka) they are liable to ship upwards of 2-3 goals a game. That said, I'm certain he will develop into a top class player. He needs to work on his defending first and foremost. And I think he has a future as a defensive midfielder, personally. He is quality on the ball, just needs to learn how to use those assets in a way that benefits the team.

didnt smalling play on the left when jones started?

This. That's not good ball control, that's just Stones being plain stupid.

Didn't he get abuse from the fans when he did that, the look he gave them, hes a bit of a prick aint he.

He looks like he is more naturally gifted on the ball than Rio, who I thought was sometimes overrated in this respect because English defenders tended to be a bit mediocre on the ball. Stones from the little I've seen him looks genuinely brilliant on the ball. He's impressed me defensively as well, but I haven't seen enough to judge him for sure.

If he's got as much potential as people think he has, then I hope we sign him this summer. His class, and Smalling's brutal dominance could make a mockery of premier league attacks in a year or two.

I like him and I think he'll probably turn out to be class in a few years.

But he's massively overrated at the moment. He's not as much of a sure thing as the likes of Shaw and Smalling were when they came here - both of them basically had everything key nailed down, and it was just about adding to it. At worst they were always going to end up as fairly decent supporting casts in a starting line up.

He's more in the Jones category, where there's still a lot of work to be done (Jones is a better defender too). You won't make it as a top level premier league defender, if you can't defend exceptionally well and he's too suspect at the moment.

Smalling didn't have everything nailed down. That is nonsense. People were like who the hell is this when we signed him. He wasn't even a regular for Fulham the time and they signed him like only a year ago from non league.

Smallings nailed everything down the last 12 months. But there were definitely more question marks about him before that.
