John Stones | Done Deal

True, we have several potentially good/great defenders on the books already, what we really need is a reliable, solid and experianced centre back. Who is also a bit of a thug when required.
I hate Pepe for all his previous antics but I think we all have to admit this season and during Euro he was a beastly defender. Moreso than before I think. Was he bought by Mou when he was at Real? Probably reunion is due.

Stones reminds me of Gary Pallister when we bought him ( for what was an astronomical fee back then ) .
Most pundits thought we had massively overpaid for this young centre back who liked to pay the ball out from the back ,looked prone to mistakes and a little lightweight when up against physical strikers .
He had a very difficult 1st season for us but once he settled he became a fantastic servant to the club and alongside Steve Bruce became one half of one of our best ever centr back partnerships
( close to that of Rio and Vidic ).I think stones is in the same mould and played with the right CB partner I think he will become 1 st choice for England for many years to come.
Alongside a physical presence like Bailey I think he would be a great fit for us ( far better than Smalling ) but looks like he is off to City , think he will be a great buy for them .

Yep, and you could easily be talking about Rio in this section - substitute the name and it pretty much works!

Pepe has been really good lately indeed.

He was exactly who I was thinking of. Considering the likes of Ramos/Bonnuci are unobtainable Pepe would be a great fit.

Plus if the rumour circulating around Alaba is true that Bayern ask for Pepe plus cash we can all assume Carlo is having similar opinion of Pepe too. Not to mention he fits the Vidic mold more than Bonucci and play more games in the traditional setup of 2 CBs instead of 3 that Juve and Italy is currently employing.

No chance of us getting him so, Madrid would be much happier shipping him off to Bayern than entertain any notion of dealing with United.

I wish we were in for him.
He has talent. He may have had a bad season, but I fancy hmain to become at least 'very good'.

IMO, last Summer when Jose was interested, he was the flavour of the month. But since then, his form has dipped (for a long period of time) and maybe he just isn't as good a some people thought he was.
J.Stones may or may not become a top defender.
Last season he was pretty average, so £50M is far too much money.

I think the best thing he can do is spend a season under Koeman.

Can't believe it's talking this long to find a resolution over £10m difference in valuation.

Pepe and Mourinho clashed in 12/13 don't think it could happen.

Winning is exhausting?

It could be, but I'm not talking about winning, because you can also win with people like Carlo. My point is that their methods and their obsession with tactics aren't pleasant if you see them from another perspective. Probably, both have different philosophies, but in some way, their very specific way of thinking and their perfectionism could be problematic for the player and their development.

Comparisons with Ferdinand at the same age wind me up no end. It's no exaggeration at all, Rio was miles ahead of Stones from a defensive standpoint at that stage in his career. Stones struggles with the very basics of defending.

Here's a question, Bailly vs Stones.

Who's better now?
Who has a higher ceiling?
Crazy to think that in 2015 Bailly was signed for €5.7m and Stones had a bid rejected for £30m, and now they're being compared. And people wonder why English teams turn to the rest of Europe. Stones had a poor year but it's easy to forget he didn't actually want to be there.

I'm in the minority view on here that I think he'll be a great signing and I really want it to happen. So if Bailly is as good then he'll turn into a fine player; just difficult to compare the two until they both play in good sides in the same league (next year hopefully!).

Pretty much this. It's not even a lazy comparison, it's an utterly stupid one.

His playing style gets him a lot of credit kinda like how Pepe being a cnut means a lot of people dont rate his defending much. But as a defender I really dont think he will ever be an outstanding defender.

Last season happened.
Oh, I know that much. :D I just thought something happened recently in preseason or on social media by your comment. Is Williams still most likely to replace? Ayew jumping ship could be a big plus for a deal.

I read they are in for Kone from Sunderland. No idea if there's any truth to the interest, but think he'd be a decent signing

Nah I've just felt he clearly doesn't want to be here ever since that transfer request last season. His lack of responsibility and general arrogance in his play has grated on me to the point where I just wish he would just go. Lukaku is the same but he can be forgiven at the time being because he scores goals.

I really do hope we get Williams , him and Jagielka could make a fine partnership under Koeman. The central midfield needs 2 big signings and a creative left midfielder if we want to fight for European places this season though.

Hasn't Mirallas been quite good in that position in pre-season?

Looks like he plays for City now, he's on their Champions League squad. Pretty low key move if true
