Joao Miranda

Didnt I make it obvious enough?

Sadly, "wooosh" moments in the transfer forum are easy to miss. :D

I have the opposite problem: I assumed JefferiesTube was being sarcastic at first.

You can be forgiven for that. He's had a stinker in this thread. We all have our blind spots then I guess.

Reported as a done deal for United in Spain according to Sport Witness.

I hope we don't sign him for 30million... It's breaking our previously successful preference of buying guys in their early to mid twenties and letting them flourish here.

I think an older, more experienced centre back is exactly what we need, and he's an upgrade on Vermaelen, but there's no way we're spending 24m on a centre back who is 30 in three months, and unless his contract runs out soon I don't understand why Atletico would sell him for considerably less.

It's a bit different with a center-back, as they usually peak later than other players (bar goalkeepers). But it is a lot of money. Then again, if he can have four or five seasons as a top-CB for us, it will be vindicated. The main thing for me is that he is a very good player, unlike Vermaelen. I would prefer the younger Godin, though, I'd say they're at the same level.

Unfortunately we could give younger players time then because CL was guaranteed. Now we need to get back to our best almost instantaneously. Yes we can get a couple of kids, but we also need experience to help out at the back.

Not kids but guys in their early to mid twenties like Mangala, Hummels, Moreno or even Garay at a stretch... They all have experience and a good 7/8 years left in the game. Miranda, at 30, will prob only have 3 or 4 years with us.

Agreed. The policy is clearly "quick fix." Get back amongst it, then worry about the long term.

Agree. Also, Van Gaal is quite old himself so he may not be too worried beyond the next few years

That's not his style, his ego force him to try to create a legacy, and we are supposed to have the long term fixed with Jones and Smalling, what we lack is a reliable CB, for the now.

Funny how it's being reported as a done deal by AS, but barely seen a mention of Miranda in the English press.

So what do we do with Jones Smalling and Evans. Have faith in their quality.. Like someone said we are not in champions league we can't rely on a Mangala and hope they come good if anythin thats what we are doing now and people are saying we require more quality at the back. None of the names you've said except Hummels is better than what we have and to me with Hummels we have an issue with his pace that would give us the same problems we had last year with Rio and Vid's.

That's a good thing or a bad thing, depending which side of this signing you are on.

Better than Vermaelen, at least.
i agree, Vermaelen would be nothing more than another overpayed inconsistent squad player, at least Miranda would make an instant impact on the quality of our first team.

and while i really don't like the idea of signing a near 30 year old player for round the 30 million mark, at least it wouldn't be like signing robben, who is a 30 year old winger whose whole game is based around pace, and at 30 one injury could pretty much end his uslefulness.

so while it not a great bit of buiness, it not awful either.

i'll definitely will take him over vermaelen but certainly not for 30million, whether it is in euros, pound sterling or even dollar america.

I love how there's so much pressure on us to make signings yet so much objection to every name mentioned:smirk:

I find it bizarre that he's not in the Brazil team let alone the squad and someone like David Luiz is a first choice, madness. Best defender in La Liga last season.

He looks good but not at the prices being quoted - 24m for a 29 year old defender who is not a full international looks a bit steep

The not a full international bit isn't as much a thing when the nation is Brazil though!
If it was 24m for a 29year old uncapped English player it'd be more worrying!

When i read that, don t know why the name "lescott" came to my mind :)

Or he is smart enough to understand that in today's game you have to do enough in the present inorder to earn the right to think about tomorrow.
Agreed. Number one priority is to get back into the Champions League, not to build a side that can do so in a few years time. And if that makes me sound like an Arsenal or Liverpool fan, well so be it.

AS are saying that "Miranda has almost tied up a deal with United" on their website, not that there's a deal.

Atletico have said that if he goes, it will be for the full release clause amount - the €30m. So I don't think this is cut and dried. He's interested and so are we, I can believe that. Whether we're interested enough to buy him isn't quite the same thing.

i would really like him to sign for us. (or any experienced central defender)

that would free Jones to play as a DM where he play his best football.

one things for sure, we can't go into next season with our current 3 as our only centre backs.
All three seem to miss large swathes of the season, and none of the three make a quality double act.

Evans has been here ages, yet still there's doubts against certain types of opponents. The other two seem to have all the attributes to be a dream combination, but whether it's simply lack of chances to get a consolidated string of starts, you wouldn't be that confident with them

I cannot believe that when people are crying out for new signings and we are linked with a player like Miranda, they are all negative about it. I mean age doesn't matter right now for us. We need instant success and Miranda was part of one of the most defensively grilled team in Europe last season. Who cares he didn't make the Brazil team, he won La Liga with Atleti and came minutes away from winning CL, something neither Hummels or Benatia came close to achieving last season. Is that not vindication enough? Him being 30 by the time the season starts mean he still has at least 4 season of top class performance left in him which is good enough for me. Right now, we cannot get Hummels or Benatia and other than these guys, I think Miranda is the best we can get. People here are so contradictory here. We need a CB and would be delighted to get him.
