On ADM you're probably right. Nani was a lazy feck though. Dier is a decent defender but hardly one of the EPL best defenders

He's mostly played in midfield. I'd rather have him than Rojo or Jones currently.

Correct but you also have other players coming from less glamourous leagues like Vertonghen or Fonte doing well. Like i said things aren't as linear. I understand the relutancy not to overpay but that's how the market works, specially when dealing with english clubs

Fonte has been here since 2008 or so though. And he moved to championship or league one. Even now he is at best a Southampton level player.

Err so? My point is that he came from a lesser league and still did well. Whether he is at best a Southampton level player, Fonte has still been widely praised in the last seasons as one of the best defenders in the league. Better than anything United has bar Smalling.

Nah, overrating him in a big way here. Balancing out his good spells and his bad this season he's only really been average. Blind's probably been better this season and he's not even really a CB.

In the last two years (besides this season) there were people voting him for the team of the year. And it's your opinion, i don't think Blind has been better than him at all. Fonte has been solid for our national team as well.

Not really. He will be found out if he goes to a bigger club. There are lots of defenders like him (Reid, Williams and all who look class at smaller clubs but would look average at a higher level club). Fonte is a decent CB but he wouldn't be better than a fit Jones. Jones would probably look like a top player for a lesser club like how Evans is doing for WBA.

Well it's your opinion and i have a different one. It's all speculation. You can't say that he will get found out if he goes to a bigger club. There's no proof besides a hunch from your behalf. What i do know is that he had very good last two years (minus this season where there was a drop in his production) and he's an integral part of our national team. Agree about Evans since i actually liked him as a player but not in relation to Jones since i think he is absolutely useless and lacks footballing IQ. We will have to agree to disagree.

Looks great on YT, but critics could argue that five goals and eleven assist for a winger at Sporting is not "all that". Dominant team, poor league etc. Payet had seven goals and 16 assist for a rather popr Marseille-team in 2014. But thats just from a statistical point of view.

It's good numbers. And in our system it's not like our wingers get huge numbers. We play in 4-4-2 and our strikers are the main references. Besides Nani last year, our wingers usually get this type of statistics. And he hasn't played just as RW. He has played as MC and AMC as well. And when a player comes second in the best player in the league category (in front of many quality players), it's a better testament of his impact. But like you said you were just analyzing the statistical pov. Anyways the rumours will probably die down a bit since our President said that he will only leave for his clause (60 million) and i doubt clubs will get close to that value. Jorge Jesus also says that he is the most important player in our squad and will remain unless someone pays the clause. I think it will be Slimani who leaves, newspapers today are saying that Leicester have informed Sporting that they will pay the 30 million of his clause. Let's see if it's true in the next days after our last game this weekend.

I agree its decent. But given the price one could expect something more spectacular. But he is an interesting player.

It will be hard for him to move this year mate. Our President's asking price is close to his clause and i dunno if clubs are willing to pay that. Also Slimani will move to England for a big fee and if Jorge Jesus loses João Mário as well he will be pissed. My fear is that if he has a strong Euro, clubs won't give up as easily. I hope he stays another year with us.

Unsurprising. I mantain that it's very hard for him to leave. Only a very big offer will do. If our President sells João Mário, Jorge Jesus will be pissed and that will destabilize the club. Only an offer close to his clause will make it understandable. After an excellent league campaign, i´m looking forward to seeing him at the Euros.

I noticed he was playing as an AM yesterday and played a part in the first goal. What role do you see him playing at the Euros?

He was playing AM because Adrien was suspended so Jorge Jesus moved him to AM and put Gelson Martins as RW since Gelson had a super game against Setúbal. In the Euro i think he will play either MC or AMC since Nani and Ronaldo will probably take the wings. I'd bet on him playing alongside with Moutinho or behind the striker. I´m almost certain Nani will be the RW.

The kind of signing we should be making. I reckon 45 million euro could do the trick.

I saw the game against Setubal, Martins looks like another good prospect, he's rapid and pretty composed in the final 3rd for a young player. Jorge Jesus has also gotten a lot out of Bryan Ruiz. So Joao Mario can definitely operate in essentially a 2 man midfield with an AM/SS/#10 type in front?

Iam I correct in saying his best position is on the right wing but he is talented enough to also play as a central midfielder or nr 10

Yes. That was essencially where he played till Jorge Jesus put him as RW this year.

He can play all those three positions with reasonable efficiency. I was surprised to see Jorge Jesus put him as RW but it was a good gamble and it paid off. He has been very good as MC and AMC but it was as RW that he was the nominated second best player in the league this year.

Thanks for the info mate, I have watched him more this season where he's been on the right, so wasn't sure. I'd love to see us buy him to maybe start on the RW and then when he's used to the PL move into CM.

Like i said mate, i doubt he will move this year. Sporting rejecting a 35 million PSG bid must mean that Slimani must be the one moving. Yesterday when Slimani interacted with the supporters it felt like it was a goodbye from him. Of course a super Euro by João Mário can change alot of things.

I don't think we'd have any trouble meeting the buyout clause and frankly he is one of the few quality options left in the market before we are left with mediocrity like Mane, Wanyama and other mid level crap that will see us treading water.

You think sporting wouldn't sell him for under his release clause ? Or would something like 45 to 50 million euro get him ?

A deal like with Martial, good direct transfer fee, some big performance related bonuses and maybay we could loan out Januzaj or Pereira to sweeten things up

He's their main man, I think Sly is right in that they wont sell for much below his buyout clause.

I'd like to answer that mate but it depends on what offers our President has at his disposal. For example if Slimani, William Carvalho or Adrien move, our need to cash in on any other transfer is small. That would make our President only accept a price close or even his release clause. If João Mário is the only player attracting offers then a 45 or 50 million offer would be hard to reject.

FF also say PSG won't be coming back with another offer.
I don't believe any word France Football say about transfers anyway, it may just be a convenient way to close their BS story.

Not that João Mário couldn't interest us, he looks good and we need someone in midfield, but it's not how we usually operate.

I guess the top priority of PSG is to recruit a famous winger given the facts that Lavezzi left the club in February and Cavani will stop playing on the left.

This rumour is maybe true because Thiago Motta is very declining given his age: 34 years next August !!

I think it's true because O Jogo has mentioned PSG's interest plenty of times. They are usually reliable. I wouldn't doubt the part about our President too since he's a very hard man to deal with. A Verratti/João Mário midfield

100% agree. The offer report seems dodgy though as we only send formal offers when the deal is in the bag.

@Sly, just wondering what your XI and formation was this season under Jorge Jesus, since I didn't get to see much of Sporting.

4-4-2: Rui Patrício, Ezequiel Schelloto, Sebastian Coates, Rúben Semedo, Jefferson; William Carvalho, Adrien, Bryan Ruiz, João Mário; Slimani, Teo Gutierrez

:D

Do you think he could play the role of Busquets in a 4-1-2-3 system?

He played there in some games in his Vitória Setúbal loan and in the youth ranks at Sporting/Portuguese national team but the Managers saw that he performed better as MC/AMC and recently as RW. I think he could do that role but his real potencial comes from more upfield positions.

Thanks for your answer @Sly

Do you confirm he has a release clause of €60m ?

Pretty annoying hearing about other clubs already making offers for players when we are still stuck with Mcfeckwit and the club can't buy players without really knowing who is going to manage here next year.
