For the price Sporting want its blind robbery. he's a tidy player but really nothing special. £20m tops.

Tournament football is such a lottery for players. A couple of months ago people were hearing reports of him being touted around for £40million and not thinking too much of it, but a very mediocre Euro tournament and he is back to being a very average player again. It's amazing that an international tournament can still be the making of a player's career (see John Jensen, El-Hadji Diouf, Andy Van der Meyde, Kleberson, Jordi Cruyff etc).
Don't get me wrong, I'm really not having a go at any fans here but his agent must be crying himself to sleep after every Portugal game.

We are talking about Kia Joorabchian, you know? Not seeing him losing any tears...

What's happening with João Mário is that he's a playmaker who's been forced to play as a winger, much more with Portugal than with Sporting, although their 4-4-2 systems look the same on paper. He can control the tempo of a game like no other in Portugal, but features like that are much harder to appreciate in a tournament that in a long competition.

He played pretty much the entirety of last season for Sporting as a right winger and he was the Liga NOS player of the year playing there. Mario is a very tidy player and would be a solid player in most squads at around £20m. But for the £40m or whatever Sporting want, it's just plain stupidity.

I've been impressed with him. He hasn't played sparkling football but it looks like he has some solid foundations. Good passing, intelligent movement, covers plenty of ground, very mobile.

Sure, but a right-winger in a flat 4-4-2 isn't the same as in a 4-3-3, as Portugal's last game showed, where he was ineffective on the extreme-left, or even Mourinho's 4-2-3-1 unless extremely asymmetrical with a striker like Martial on the left and a central-midfielder like João Mário on the right.

Yes that's true. But I personally don't like him playing on the right wing, as he lacks the pace and physicality that we really need. There are also better right sided midfielders out there, especially for the quoted price of over £40m. Mario is a very good squad player to have due to his versatility, but at this stage we need players who would excel in specific positions. Needless to say, LVG would probably have loved Mario due to his versatility and his technical ability, but he's just frankly not worth the price Sporting would ask for him, nor do I feel he would be outstanding for us.

Didn't Mou already say pretty early on that he had no intention of signing anyone whos playing in Portugal leagues?

Decent tonight. Good corner taker but doubtless we could beat that out of him.

I thought he did really well tonight. Although he's been pretty average (6/10 most of the time) this tournament, I was very impressed by his workrate and intelligence. He seems a strange player as his passing is ok, he's physically very good all round, looks very two footed and has a good attitude. But I'm just not sure how to best fit him into a side. He actually reminded me a lot of Ji-Sung Park with an all round good ability combined with immense workrate. He certainly doesn't seem a match winner or a brilliant playmaker, but I reckon he could be a very useful player for a top team. 20-25 would be a fairer price for him though.

Offers near zero offensively, but a workhorse and impressed defensively. Sporting wont consider any offers under 40 or 50m, which is laughable.

I think that's harsh, considering how Portugal are set up. Physically he definitely seems to be prepared for the EPL. I agree about the fee though.

MotM for me. Loves a one-two and his delivery into the box is pretty good...

Hadn't really impressed me until yesterday mind.

Impressed me this tournament, nothing flashy about him but he does a solid job. Reckon Fergie would have liked him.

He did? Played on the wing I thought? Played there plenty for his club...

Yea he did, at Sporting he plays as a false winger, who cuts into the middle rather than the line,in a 442 system which is quite different from a winger in Portugal's 433.

Playing for Portugal he also didnt have as much freedom and not sure if confidence, tactical orders or lack of "National team status" but he does not try 1vs1 as much he does with Sporting.

I would say him and Renato Sanches were the most sacrificed tactically in favor of team tactics.

He plays on the right but when Carvalho or Adrien won't play he normally plays on a 4-2-2-2 which is a 4-4-2 with 2 players advancing more on the wings.
