Okay, fess up - if someone had told you when he was on loan at Birmingham a few years back that he'd score an absolute screamer as England tore apart someone 5-0 in a half of a world cup...yeah.

Still not sure he's top class, but what a moment for a local lad.

He did score 4 goals for Birmingham on his debut mind...

When he scored 4 on his debut for them - I can imagine that thought he would have a good future!

Commentators waxing lyrical about golden boy's 3 penalties and a header while Lingard is the only player to score from open play for England.

I love Jesse! Hope he establishes himself in as a permanent fixture in our first choice lineup next season. His movement is absolutely fantastic, and he has some absolute screamers in his locker. Just needs to become a more consistent finisher to be good for 10+ league goals every season.

Great game from him today and what a finish!

Good enough for his country, not good enough for United of course :smirk:

Not a world beater but a good (often very good) player nonetheless. So happy that he's shut many people up. Hope he continues to improve and play a vital role for United and for his country.

He may act like a kid but his years are starting to give him a footballing maturity that I hope our other youngsters like Rashford will acquire soon.

Talents in general are volatile and misjudgments happen all the time. Caf in particular seems very suspect after reading some past comments.

Handy squad player who scores in the WC and in Cup Finals for Utd. He’s not a handy squad player, he’s a first team player for club and country.

Whenever I mention his movement, some people say its a way to deflect his poor performance, but again, today showed why movement is so important, especially against teams who camp in their own half. It unsettles teams and moves players out of position.

To add to that, his link play was very good and his goal was phonomenal.

Great game by Jesse.

Rumours are that we're after another midfielder, but as I've said before, Lingard can rotate with Pogba in the advanced 8 position.

England were noticeably poorer when he went off.

He's an important player in England's attacking link-up and creative play. He has finishing and smart runs in his repertoire too.

Great player, and will prove vital for England in years to come.

We should really stop treating him as a winger(because he isnt one, specially on the right side) and start using him only as a midfielder. Id love to see Jesse and Pogba in front of Fred/Herrera against the lesser teams.
Unfortunately i can easily see him on the right again, out of position :(

He's a really intelligent and good player isn't he.
You can see Why so many managers trust him.
Hopefully he gets a lot more game time for us and scores more crackers.

They will return in due course. ;)

People really underestimate our players on here. The youth players here who are good enough to even get near the first team are obviously technically excellent. It all just depends on their mentality, fitness and a little bit of luck after that. I’m not an England fan whatsoever but anyone can see how important Jesse is to them and was to us last season. It takes a few seasons trust for young players to really show what they can do. I’m really glad our coaches stuck with lingard because he’s clearly a good intelligent and technical footballer. It Feels weird saying it after that goal but if he worked on his finishing and composure he’d be a top AM. He has that first time curler into the far corner down He always gets chances and he always makes chances.

Waiting for media to rip these players apart at the very next opportunity and the Jesse haters to come back out in force after the next draw/knocked out on pens etc. It’s not just down to lingard when that happens lads, Kane Sterling etc, players posters would love for us sign will be as much a part of the problem then. This is actually the best England team in ages. It’s not just forcing names in for the sake of it and it’s a young and learning team.

Jesse has always been the go-to whipping boy for people who are generally frustrated about the state of the club, the manager, or the style of football we are playing. When Rashford misses a chance its not so much a big deal, but when Lingard misses one the inquest about player quality commences in near real time either in the match day thread or in here. People widdle up all sorts of extravagant theories about why our overall play is somehow Jesse's fault. Not so much the case with Rashford and Martial.

The fact he took him and Harry off shows how important Southgate thinks he is to England. I agree that the performance dropped when he went off, but we were well ahead and why bust a gut.

Handy squad player is underrating him hugely. I think it is because most of the time his play is not particularly eye catching outside the spectacular goals. He is technically very good though, the key reason why he is so much better in tight areas than someone like Ali, intelligence, technical ability and understated athletic ability when it comes to his body control, balance and agility. I think he could easily adapt to playing in a team like City, his style would work there, quick passing, instant movement, in a fluent attacking system he would thrive. Utd is more chaotic and relying on individual moments so many of his strengths are not exploited.

The other lads are still a few years off being complete. That’s the risk you take with young players but I’d sure as hell rather try and develop our own Sánchez or Di Maria than pay world record fees and wages and have them come in and stink the place up just as bad as a player learning the game. Giving youth a chance is the United way. We need build another great team. Signing household names hasn’t worked at all for us. They are just coming here to collect a massive wage and I think proving themselves all over again is a distant second on lots of established players lists. For what it’s worth i think if bale can stay fit hed be an amazing signing. Id stil rather a young signing who we can make a star of and enjoy their peak years here like Rooney and Ronaldo

Our players deserve some credit. Lingard, Young, Lukaku, Pogba have individually matched or outplayed the likes of Griezman, Rose, Sterling, Kane etc on their respective teams

Maybe our squad isn't as shite as a few would have us believe

So happy for him - especially after the elbow and being thrown to ground by them.

You can tell Rio really likes him. Whenever he's analysing a United game and Jesse is the topic, he's always singing his praises. Great to see.

Handy squad player? FFS, he started all the games for England nowadays, some observation here in CAF is baffling.

He is like rich man's Mata, or younger Mata. Up and away Messe, up and away.
