Our players deserve some credit. Lingard, Young, Lukaku, Pogba have individually matched or outplayed the likes of Griezman, Rose, Sterling, Kane etc on their respective teams

Maybe our squad isn't as shite as a few would have us believe

It's all down to the system they are playing. Rapid, youthful and exciting.

First time I saw an English team with a proper system. You don't need 11 world class players to win a tournament.

The fact he took him and Harry off shows how important Southgate thinks he is to England. I agree that the performance dropped when he went off, but we were well ahead and why bust a gut.
Agree with this. But in possession we were a bit more disjointed. For the 6th goal we had 26+ uninterrupted passes before scoring, the most in a World Cup goal since 1966. After Lingard and Kane went off we misplaced many passes.

Didn't matter in the end and it was more important to conserve energy.

I love watching him in a position suited for his qualities. Will be interesting to see him there against better teams.

Yep meanwhile City's attackers look ordinary outside of Pep's system so far.

Sterling seems like a player who is very afraid of the big stage. Several times this season when in big games, he bottled his confidence.

Our Jesse on the other hand is brilliant in this kind of games.

Yep, the opposite of Rashford. Easy to say that Sterling has had a better season with his club, but Rashford seems to enjoy the high pressure games more.

Handy squad player? FFS, he started all the games for England nowadays, some observation here in CAF is baffling.

He is like rich man's Mata, or younger Mata. Up and away Messe, up and away.

Was talking about his role for United, not England if you meant my post.

He is a starter for England, but not a sure starter for us, though he will undoubtedly get his share of games.

It's been a long while now people here saying his level is just a squad player. He can be good first team player for both United and England.

Well, reality is he is a squad player for United. Jose's got Sanchez and is chasing a RW like Willian or someone for a starter.

You can argue that he is the first choice number 10 when we play that system though.

Probably the best player we’ve ever had. #JLingz

That might become Pogba's role if we play Matic, Fred, and Pogba in the midfield.

Regardless, no top team can survive without quality rotation options. Maybe Lingard isn't a nailed-on starter for 55 games a season but he certainly hasn't been a passenger for us these last few seasons. We've got bigger issues to deal with than upgrading on Lingard IMO.

We certainly underrate him, even now.
Simply a very effective player who pops up with screamers every now and then, especially on the big stage.

I can't wrap my head around some of the screamers he scores then misses sitters. Love watching him play
He missed few last season, yeah then look at sterling who is conaidered much better talent, even today he missed a sitter before stones tapped it in, what is inporant that he gets to these chances and scores here and there, there are no layers who even not get i to any, martial makes it look classy dribbling past few players on his good day, but for lingard it is easier to make a clever run and win a penalty or give one two and good run to score a great goal like today... very underappreciated. Football is not about first touch and dribbling. And Lingard certainly is a team player who works hard, putting pressure on opposition often winning ball on top of some great attacking contribution. Even for England he plays way deeper in a rigid set up and people expect wonders, he’s box to box for southgate not a second striker or main player in the team who is expected score goals for fun lime griezmann. i think Lingard would score a lot of screamers and easy goals for Athletico playing as a second striker for sure. Not talking about how many chances Griezmann fluffed and noone talks about them because simply noone watches 60full games of athletico every minute whereas Lingard gets slack for every bad touch he has. Not saying they are players on the same lwvel but certainly not as far as some people say.

Judging by WC and Griezmanns price tag, that seems like a total rip off and Jesse would also be 100m player. For the shit grizzy plays at world cup being one of the main mans and most attacking players in the team full of worldies against Lingard hard working team player - midfielder... I mean judging by the performances I would know who to buy or prefer..

Sorry to say, I was one of the naysayers. His movement has always been good but the final ball/ finish was very inconsistent. Now that's improved, he's become a very good player.
Dont hink he changed that much from his youth days, he always scored alot of goals as an attacking midfielders, he developped steadily and it’s a lot down to his confidence taking some of his chances like he took them imo. Definitely more instinctive finisher who gets to a lot of chances and some of them fluffes rather than clinical striker bt he doesnt play that role does he? Ive seen griezmann, sterling, firminho and other players who are considered on a higher level failing miserably in front of he goal playing more advanced position with a lot more freedom, even Kane missed a lot of sitters. We should be jusging him on his return and not criticize him on what he didnt score. And his return from his more disciplined position is very very good. Maybe if he wasn’t from our academy and his name was mkhitaryan or some brazilian, btw he was a lot like lings in dortmund, he would be judged differently. Yeah Lingard sounds very uninspiring but we should be glad we have such player who never moans gaves his everything and gets paid half of what some other players who has the same return and are considered higher tier...

Yawn against piss poor opposition. Not a world class number 10. People will sing a different tune when we play against big teams and he performs his usual disappearance act.

If we play 433, do you prefer Lingard as RW or the most advanced CM in a midfield of 3 (Pogba position)?

How much game time will he get next season after the arrival of Fred since we will now be playing 3 in CM?

This is simply untrue. He can play well regardless of the opponent. He's not some flat track bully like you imply.

Didn't see the game and not a lingard fan but fair play what a strike kid.

I agree but his goal today was sensational so credit where credit is due buddy.

Maybe players like Lukaku and Lingard are just improving as players? Both have played well this year period.

Who said he was world class. Hes a good player. For United he has scored plenty of goals in big games

I guess he would start as our right winger instead of Mata (if we don't buy a new RW).

Check out the highlight from the Arsenal game at the Emirates, my favourite individual performance of the season.

100% agreed. Kudos to Southgate, he has made this "uninspiring" players to play good football.

And Lingard's goal was a worldie. He's a scorer of great goals.
