Thankfully Kane scored. However did anybody notice when during a cutback he shouted rashford to leave it when he had a clear scoring chance, while he was surrounded, Rashford seemed pretty pissed about it. Why does he freeze infront of goal? And all his decision making becomes stupid specially infront of goal?

Gives a feck if Lingard shouted? That's all on Rashford. If he thinks he can score then he should be hitting it.

I wonder if he practices shooting and finishing enough. He really can move onto the next level if his finishing is more consistent. Its not as if he can't score goals, he is just very inconsistent at them.

Perhaps but just before you're winding up and your good friend and club teammate shouts his, you might think he's had a look and is in a better position. Poor from Lingard in my opinion.

If Scholes shouted "leave it" at Alan Shearer or Michael Owen in 1998, they weren't fecking leaving it. Be more selfish.

Pretty much exactly this. Really like Jesse and he's a really valuable player for us, but he's way too erratic in front of goal.

Today we got away with it, but in big game you might only get 1 half chance all game, and you need to be able to rely on players to take it.

I'm inclined to say you'll create more chances by having him around, on a good day at least

England better with him overall, though he needs to do more with the chances he gets. Didn't go missing which is more than you can say for the likes of Sterling or Alli. Would back him to do better in another game with the same chances.

His movement and knack to appear in the right place all of a sudden is top-notch. Wouldn't call that a dreadful performance but dreadful finishing.

Predictably nonsensical. Do you ever criticize Rashford for missing chances or is Lingard your only crusade of negativity here ?

Dry your eyes Raoul ffs he was honking tonight totally anonymous and when big chances fell his way he fluffed his lines. Do you disagree? He’s a very average player just like this England team.

Thought he was neither here nor there tonight. Are you participating in any other threads slating England player performances or is this the only one ?

Rashford would have got slated as he was in a difficult position to score (if an easy chance I’d agree) but he must leave it at that stage of the game to a shout. Just my opinion.

Thought Young was decent and Rashford did well so what other United players were playing tonight? Think you are a bit paranoid. Let’s just say it as he is he’s very average at best. Tonight he was honking and I’ve saw many a game for United when he’s the same.

His movement makes everything tick. Shame he doesn't combine it with a better finishing or clever passing.

I’m not his biggest fan at all, and his misses were terrible tonight, but I would rather see him miss chances instead of not getting any chances at all. Problem with Lingard is that he always seems to miss when it matters the most.

He plays advanced and he plays a lot, but he needs to double his tally to be a proper United-player next season. I have my doubts unfortunately..

Sorry but rashford came on and looked good, so let’s not try to bash him for leaving it for a shout from a player who he has very good cohesion with.

The caf: But he got into good positions...

Reality: Fluffed every chance that fell to his feet.

tonight summed him up

good movement and lots of energy

quality can vary from excellent to pish

Caused problems, demanded the ball and didn't shy away. Lingard has a great attitude and a good set of balls on him.

I bet opposition hate playing against him.

Anybody saying he should've had 2 or 3 is talking bollocks. 1st one probably should've scored. Rest of the chances were way more difficult, especially the 1v1, he did well to get to it tbh.

He does it with other players, too. Avoid the Herrera thread!

Should remain in the side as his movement was vital in the chances we created. Think Dele should drop out for RLC.

Why is the first statement not a reality? Or you think all England chances came to him and Kane only by luck?
Erm. Maybe because they both play in forward positions. I believe sterling and Alli also ‘got into’ some good positions.
Damn that Pickford for not having great movement off the ball!

Thing with Lingard is, I have more faith in him scoring a half volley from 18 yards, then I so a simple finish from 6.

For us, he's done the exact opposite

Yeah, I really bashed him with that statement didnt I? Hope he doesnt see that one.

He should have finished it himself, period. He is a striker, the game is 1-1 you don't leave it for anyone when you're in that position, you finish it

The best and worst of Lingard in one game. If he could finish in situations requiring composure he'd be a hell of a player.

I thought finishing aside, he had a good game. His movement is amazing. Hopefully now with any first game nerves eliminated, he can kick on and hopefully take some of the chances in the games to come. We can't rely on just Kane to score the goals, no matter how good he is, need the likes of Lingard, Alli and Sterling to chip in with 2-3 goals each during the tournament, especially if we want to get beyond the quarter-finals.

Imagine if Lingard had good finishing!

Had a good game. He still can't finish consistently, which will hold him back until he finds that skill (or doesn't). But he manages to affect the game so much without being on the ball just by making the right runs and manipulating the defense with his movement.

Lingard's weakness has always been composure in front of goal. He can score worldies all the time, but when he has to face down the keeper he struggles.
