Why would one bad half at the start of the season be remembered over an FA cup winner? In the short term sure but I doubt anyone will be talking about or the City game in a month time.
Because media... Jose's failed tactics is a bigger talking point then United winning the final as they were expected to do and Jesse scoring the winner.

It'll take a lot of very good performance for them to forget Jesse being taking off at half time in a big game. Everyone eyes were on the game yesterday and it will be analysed to death. It will be brought up again and again over the course of the season. The FA cup game won't.

Has this happened in the past a lot or something?

There are a lot of mid and lower table players who score a few goals too mate. I'm trying to be objective here and I'm not knee jerking, I've been speaking about Lingard in this way for a while but that recent performance was beyond poor.

You're never going to get a rational reaction from the fanboys

It happens all the time in variety of different circumstances. A recent example was Danny Murphy coming out a few days ago after the Hull game and said that Wayne Rooney has been playing great for a few seasons now. They're lazy thinkers and only remember the biggest and most recent talking points.

That's not an example of what you said though.

He obviously wasn't match fit and it was a strange selection choice by Mourinho considering Mkhitaryan wasn't fully fit either. You make it seem like his City performance sums up what he contributes to United

How Lingard can start over Martial or Rashford beggars belief. I would rather have Mata start than Lingard also. Poor selection by Jose.

Do you actually need a specific example of media writing off a player following a shite game?

How about Carrick after the 2009 CL final? It took him about two years to shake off that game. In fact I don't think he shook it off until 2013 where he carried the midfield and we won the League. The media were resigned to giving him credit because on paper, there was a massive hole in midfield.

I'm not anti Lingard, I just know how the media work. The City games wasn't as big as CL final but Lingards body of work isn't on Carricks level either. This was a big game and Lingard was so poor that he was taken off at half time. Thats all the media will bother making a note of.

You talk about this one game right?

If not, you must have slept through last season. What is the most annoying & frustrating thing about Lingard is he's in good position to receive chance but fails to convert/poor end product.

Yeah, I was commenting mainly on this match. But, the positioning in counter attack has always been horrible, even last season.

He is still not united quality.

People get hung up on this sort of thing.

What is United quality? We've always had our star players and our squad players.
Noone is saying Lingard should always start, but he's plenty of worth as a squad player.

He isn't a first team United player (starting 11)
I don't think he is good enough even to be a "squadie"

It is clear he is first choice since he started over AM, MR and JM yesterday. That is simply unacceptable as a United fan.

That's an incredible assumption to make based on one game. The next couple of games will show he's not in any way first choice. Especially not on the left!

He needs to grow up and quickly, he is not in junior, reserves anymore. Yet against City he looked exactly like a u-21 player. If he can't develop his game, that there is some sort of consistency about him, he will not make it here, even as a "squadie". Right now there are couple of bright moments like that Palace, Leicester goals and then a lot of times when the only thing he can do right is run, while his work with the ball, decision making etc is simply awful.

We sit in North stand, on the left wing when United are attacking towards East stand, so we were very close to the horror show. His head was gone after about 15-20 mins. Everything he had tried didn't come off. Looked like he started to hide (at worst) or only play very safe (at best). Felt very sorry for the lad - the crowd were getting exasperated and I'm sure he was aware of that. The TV cameras wouldn't have shown it but Rooney Zlatan and most notably Pogba each came up to him to give him some ecouragement/tell him to get his head straight. Pogba appeared to be especially encouraging - embraced him and talked to him closely into his ear for a long time when the ball was dead. Jesse looked completely demoralised - kept on shaking his head and looked like he had zero confidence; like he just wanted to disappear.

Terrible game for him. Hope he can recover from the experience - coaches have got a job to do there with his mentality.

He looked like he had been out on the lash the day before.

He was sort of a big game player recently so not at all surprised Jose started him. He's not a better player than Rashford or Martial but he had done well in big games until yesterday and even won us a trophy with his goal.

Big game player!! Feck me where abouts? Its laughable to think Jesse started over Martial Mata or Rashford. Not United starting 11 class and certainly not in the big games.

He played poorly but he's young and these things can happen in matches where there is more pressure/scrutiny than others - seemed to get to the player as he seemed to make one mistake after another. I think young players are far too often overanalyzed - he has potential and shows quality, just not ready to routinely start for United

I was at the East Stand, people around me were ripping into him - especially when he smacked it against his own hand. You could just see him with his head down for most of the time. I think he made one good run where Zlatan didn't pass to him. I noticed the chat with Rooney but not the other ones, thanks for sharing.

He's nearly 24 - not 18/19 - will he be ready when he's 36?

Jesse Lingard is in advanced talks over a new deal, sources close to Manchester United have told ESPN FC.

Lingard will be here at 28/29 and people will still say he's young and waiting for him to improve.

He's a decent enough squad player, just shouldn't start in a derby against City.

Horror shows can happen. Rooney puts one on nearly every week.

He wasn't match fit or sharp enough. I understand why he started. He's a local lad and was there for his ability to work both ways. But once your first touch lets you down once or twice, your confidence drains. And he didn't even have a second half to turn it around. I feel for him.

But he will be back. Mourinho shouldn't have started him. It was what, 5 weeks between the derby and his last appearance. It was a risk that didn't pay off.

I can't remember Rooney ever being as bad as Lingard was. It got to the point that he looked dejected and wanted to go off.

He scored vs Chelsea, FA cup final, community shield, was excellent vs Arsenal and city. How about that for a big game?

Fair point but this is also about inexperience as much as age - he's had effectively one season in the first division. I still think patience is key here, especially after the deer in headlights performance on the weekend - else you really risk breaking the player

Because Rooney doesn't realise how bad he actually is. Rooney often plays like that, but will pop up with an assist or the occasional goal to mask the performance.

You obviously don't remember Villa away 1 or 2 years ago, he was absolutely shocking. So bad that even the Rooney fanboy's didnt make a video if his every touch  Wish I could see it.

You think he merits a start in our big games? Head shake

I know he can have excellent games. He was very good in the CS so I don't agree that he is a poor player just based on this game.

Plus it's hardly as if he is a starter now.

Yes but the fact that he has reached this age without much top class experience must tell people something.
He can score in a cup final but can't handle a local derby. But it's more than just about Saturdays' performance, every player can have a off day but it's the number of off days they have is the problem. If he plays 1 or 2 good games in 10 he's not good enough for us, you would expect 6,7 or 8 good games out of 10.
I think it is more about his mental maturity than his ability - he acts like a 17 or 18 yo.

People overrated him after he scored a couple of important goals. He's always been a mediocre footballer, that has never changed. He is a squad player and there is no way he should start against top teams like City

I like watching developing players, because success is rarely just down to one aspect. I look at Nolito for example and his career really only took off once he returned from loans at Celta Vigo under Lucho, at 27 years of age. Just think we too often put players in a box, especially in terms of age, and expect they will have crossed some magical experience & playing threshold. I think a lot of factors go into a player ultimately excelling at the next level.

I've seen Lingard play great & fearless and I've also seen him look a bit doey eyed out there. Perhaps he will be a perennial backup or small club player but I think it's too soon to judge that, my two cents

Something didn't seem right with him against city. I would've taken him off after the first 10 mins. He just lost the ball every time he touched it. But he is a lot better player than we saw in this game.

If he wasn't 'a-lot better' than that showing, he simply wouldn't be cut out for football at any level whatsoever. Horrendous half of football.
