He was awful there's no way about it, but sometimes players just have stinkers. He obviously let the pressure get to him and never recovered.

I hope we play him on Thursday, he needs to get that performance out the way, no point letting him dwell on it.

Lingard wasn't just awful he was downright embarrassing and a bit of a disgrace.

This was the derby, the manager has decided you are a key key player in the side so you will start ahead of a darling in Martial, to repay him by not being able to control the ball or misplacing passes and being the wrong positions is unforgivable and he needs to have a long hard look at himself.

If he was a kid, and hadn't have had great performances in key games before perhaps we could let him off, but he was a shambles and I dont think he will last much longer at United.

He will either have to accept bit part roles or move on to another club. A real shame but I think we saw him at his absolute worst and its one of the worst performances I have seen from a United player in many many years.

If he wasn't 'a-lot better' than that showing, he simply wouldn't be cut out for football at any level whatsoever. Horrendous half of football.

If he played at his normal level, we would have seen a much better half. Usually he's sprinting for 90 minutes. Doing his defensive duties, running with the ball at the opposition, usually finds his team mates in the final third. Against city, somehow he couldn't even do one of those things properly. It can't be nerves because he played well in the last derby. I think he just lacked match fitness.

as others have said, he seems to get lumped in with martial and rashford in the sense that he's "young". obviously he's not old, but as he'll be 24 shortly, i don't think he exactly fits the bill of being a prospect.

lingard has obviously scored some important goals for us, but i just don't see what he brings that others can't. i suspect jose sees that now, based on his comments after the game. i wouldn't be surprised to see young or depay given a chance ahead of him next time.

I know he can have excellent games. He was very good in the CS so I don't agree that he is a poor player just based on this game.

Plus it's hardly as if he is a starter now.

He just started in our biggest game of the season. He should be nowhere near our starting 11. It is not based on one game it is based over all the games he has played for us.

Something didn't seem right with him against city. I would've taken him off after the first 10 mins. He just lost the ball every time he touched it. But he is a lot better player than we saw in this game.
I would have been better than him in that game.

He started one game after being benched for the other 3 which shows he isn't a starter. A starter would start most games. He is a squad player and they will play at times during a long season. If Memphis starts next game it doesn't make him a starter either

Overall his last season was good enough for him to be in our team. Obviously he isn't Messi but he has qualities that is integral to the team.

He was woeful, absolutely nothing came off for him. He shouldn't have started in such a high intensity game when he hadn't played in weeks. He showed last season that he can be an ok squad player. Though sometimes I look at him and think he's pretty woeful.

He will get plenty of chances this season with all the games that we have and hopefully he'll have a good season and play his part.

He really hasn't he is stone average at best.

I don't think he is stone average. He is a decent player. He has shown quality during lots of games last season.

Decent is not good enough for United prath especially in the big games.

You don't have a squad in which 23 players are all world class. It is made up of 6 world class, 6 very good consistently, 11 good and reliable players who can be able backups.

He can very easily be in the third category.

Good squad option and a local lad. Somehow turned to utter shit against City, but horror shows happen. With that being said, Martial/Rashford should always start before him.

Really? I don't mind him as a squad player but he needs to add consistency to his game. He was good at times last season but went through a spell for a month or so after the turn of the year where he looked utterly useless. He is a player who has never really stood out as someone who has looked excellent during several loans to Championship clubs and he often failed to start for Derby during his last loan spell (yes, he scored 4 for Birmingham on his debut!).

For me, he's the epitome of bang average, in the context of being a player for a really top club, anyway. Nothing wrong with having some average squad players who will play when needed and can contribute. I still feel he's very, very overrated by some on here who get extremely defensive when he's criticised. I don't get that, personally.

Stayed away from this thread because I knew he'd be getting slaughtered.

Never seen him so nervous.

He went on a run where he didn't score or assist but he was always putting in decent performances. Like against city he was very instrumental.

I am yet to see anyone who calls him world class or something. Almost everyone feels he deserves to play in the squad. And as a squad player it's natural he will start a few games and after his CS performance and martial's indifferent form may have made Jose to try him. Not really sure that is indicative of anything else

He shouldn't be starting our biggest games though. Simple as.

The problem is on Saturday's showing he was neither good nor reliable. The likes of John O'Shea and Wes Brown were in this 3rd category and while they never set the world alight you knew if you picked them in a big game they wouldn't be like rabbits in the headlights. Not saying they didn't make mistakes but they never were overawed by the occasion.

Meh. I am not completely sure I buy that if this happens to a player once, it will necessarily happen again. He had a couple of poor touches early on and just lost confidence. It could easily have gone the other way.

Mind you, I do think Lingard, good player though he is, is probably at the Cleverley level rather than the very top level.

He had a good game at the etihad last season so I doubt it's a case of overawe or whatever.

It was just a bad game. Based on this game even Pogba isn't reliable or good. That's what happens when you take into account one game.

Is it based on this game alone completely ignoring all his performances vs chelsea Arsenal city and all?

At the end of the day it's not like he went and put himself in the starting eleven. If Jose put him there he is hardly going to refuse to play. So unless you think Jose can't rate players well, I don't really see why you complain he was started. He didn't play well which is his fault but starting a game is based on training and past performances so clearly Jose likes him.

No, he wasn't. He had a spell after Christmas where he was just poor. Have a look at his performance thread last year for evidence of that. I'm not talking about games where he didn't contribute; yes, he had games where he didn't contribute but played well, like all players do.

As I said, he's a grand squad player but he's average.

Seems that Lingard cannot be criticised though without the person being labelled a 'hater'. I have been encouraged by him this season but if we put it into perspective he was poor in a lot of games last season and this game was probably the worst of the lot. I'll give him benefit of the doubt for this game because he didn't look fully fit but the people saying this is a rare bad game have the blinkers on it seems. Long term i'm not sure whether he is good enough to be here, if I was to say my honest opinion i'd say no but let's hope he continues to show the form he has shown under Jose prior to Saturday.

Plenty of the team had a bad game, I'm not singling him out as being the only bad player. Just the nature of Lingard's performance was worrying and all his good work has been reset to 0, he's going to have to do a lot to regain Mourinho's trust.

Honestly, if he wore an Everton, West Ham to Spurs shirt, some on here would be raving about him. We seem to be more critical of our own yet, salivate about other players. Whilst people talk about City players quality, would anyone take any of there defensive players including the keeper over ours?

Couldn't disagree with that statement more. If he played for any of those clubs, I doubt anyone on here would rate him. He's grand as a squad player for now but needs more consistency to his game.

Really....even after watching the goals at Wembley?

It's based on everything I have seen from him. A goal here and there doesn't change the fact he is very very limited and shouldn't be more than a squad player for a club like us.

Maybe so but everyone does have games they have little to nothing going right for them.

He is actually solid in most games that he plays. Yesterday he was crap though

Yeah maybe so. But I guess that's also the case with mkhitariyan now.

Really....even after watching the goals at Wembley?

Yeah Robbie Keane etc over the years scored some belters and no one on here rated them. I don't think our fans would be raving about Lingard if he played for Everton etc, in fact, I would say no one would rate him. He's the kind of player that would really only be appreciated by his own fans, I doubt any oppo fans rate him.

I agree. I still dont think he will make it here long term.

Can't see anyone saying he is anything but that

What do you think is the meaning of a squad player? It's a player who can come in when a first teamer is having a stinker and put in a decent level of performance. That's exactly his role. It didn't work out yday but i doubt anyone sees him as a must start player. And will start in a few games as part of rotation.

He clearly started last game because martial wasn't very good and he had a good community shield. That's the job of a squad player. To push for a starting place thereby forcing the first teamer to improve his own performance

Maybe so but everyone does have games they have little to nothing going right for them.

Well my point was that he badly needs to add consistency to his game and he definitely does. He's a decent little player but he's average. He will do as a squad player as we will have a lot of games this season and I'm sure he can chip in with some goals / assists.

He really shouldn't have started against City as everyone seems to agree on. He hadn't played in weeks and it was stupid to think he would be up to speed for that match. However, he was ridiculously poor and he had a few similar games to that last season, albeit not quite that horrendous.

What the heck does that change. Macheda scored a goal even more important. Look where he is now.

The point I was making is unless I'm mistaken, most accept for example Mikki is a good player but I'm sure it's not on the basis of watching German football every week? If you look at Lingaard based on time on the pitch and again high profile games, it's very good....and that's why his profile in another shirt would look different. Nothing to do with just an important goal. Bit different as both the previous and new manager clearly rate him anyway.

I agree. I still dont think he will make it here long term.

Aye. Strange assertion to make about Lingard of all players. If anything, he's typically the type of player that oppo fans would call utterly useless and I feel it would be the same from our fans if he played for someone else.

I was very surprised to see him start over Martial/Rashford, considering he had not played a single minute since that CS injury. Think he will do decently as a squad option. Not his biggest fan but kinda felt sorry for the lad. He just seemed to have gotten off on the wrong side of bed that day it seemed. Hope he gets a chance to recover from that horror show against Feynoord.
