Jerome Boateng

He started in every important match he was available for, our CL clashes against Real above all (which ended his season last season).
Bringing him to the world cup was doing him a disservice after that, here it showed that he hadn't had enough time to recover, although he was still nowhere as bad as reading this thread would have you believe.

If someone said that, they would be wrong.

You mean he played to his level when present this last season, and the season before? Just curious, I haven’t watched him at all, just got another impression from a few others.

Thanks for your response, and don't worry I know he's an excellent player, if he was coming injury free there would be no question in my mind that he'd easily be the best centre back in the PL.

If we get Boateng in it almost smacks of "getting someone in for the sake of it" / to appease the fans. Hopefully we're just using him as a lever to get Toby a bit cheaper

Well looking at the reactions ,they may have failed on that point.

Boateng's not a joke, but there's a very good reason Bayern are looking to get rid. He's not the player he was and Luckhurst, drama queen or not, has it right that it would be a sign of defeat if we get him given he is not one of our top targets.
Maybe Bayern want rid of him because of off field issues and they feel it's the right time to cash in on him. Bayern fans seem to think Boateng is still very good.

I like Smalling but Boateng is better. It wasn't long ago people were calling him one of the best centre backs in the world.

That was before he lost the ability to turn and run... he was a world class defender but injuries ruined him.

Bayern doesnt sell first team players if they are fully fit and important to their team. They are trying to do "a Schweinsteiger" and i suspect they are doing the same with Vidal.

Doesn’t improve us sufficiently (bang average 17/18), will cost too much given age and position isn’t a priority over width. Don’t have a clue what our strategy is, should there be any truth in this. Please don’t do it.

This forum is more knowledgeable and not representative of the wider fanbase - the wider global fanbase will just see it as United prising a high profile World Cup winner from Munich (sounds familiar?)

Indeed. Bayern are no mugs, they are well run and know when to get rid of a player. Unfortunately we're the exact opposite. After all the mistakes we've made in recent years you'd think we would have learnt from them by now.

If Bayern are looking to offload, he shouldn't command a reported £45m. I'd take him for £20m and reasonable wages.

Ain't seen him play for Bayern for a long time, but from what I saw at the WC he was a shower of shite.

He was benched in 7 league games last season where he possibly could have played.
Right now we have Boateng, Hummels, Süle, and optionally Martinez.
So he was fit to play in around 26 games of a 32 game league.
Utd fans immediately data mining to prove how bad a player is has become a terrible habit on here, it just kills discussion.

Could be this. Could also be that a player like Rojo has asked to leave and that we actually need a "squad player" like Mina or even Boateng (even if I think he is suddenly weirdly underrated here). And thats why we are looking below our "first choices" like Maguire or Aldeweireld. Which is also just speculation of course.

The strategy is presumably to get in an experienced ball-playing defender to provide a bit of leadership at the back while Bailly/Lindelof are developing. Our options seem to be a couple of 29 year olds with checkered injury records or the £75m man from Leicester.

From the Bayern forums...

What a joke. Clubs have long since realised that Bayern have no negotiation skills so they abuse us because they know they would get their way.

Since we're so bad we should maybe start considering release clauses.

If they manage to keep him healthy, this transfer may make us look really stupid in a few months of time.

Came to post this...
This is insane
I want Kalle gone and not Uli.

THEN DON'T SELL HIM FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, WHAT IF BOTH MATS AND NICKLAS GET SUSPENDED/INJURED? By the way, Mai is already injured (broken knee ligament)

Wow. It would be insane going into the season with only Hummels and Sule as actual quality CBs, while depending on Javi and Alaba to fill the gaps when needed. Letting Vidal go for 20m is a stroke of genius compared to this one.

So, we will probably end up selling Boateng to United, not getting a replacement for him this summer, and not even getting the much-needed Martial offered by them in return? I sure hope I'm wrong there and that our management is not that stupid.

The only annoying thing I find about Boateng is his injuries. His performance is usually constant throughout the season. He's a world-class defender. But we are tired..so tired of injuries. I hope Pavard comes no matter what happens with Boateng this summer.

Thought this was interesting from Reddit..

according to transfermarkt Alderweirald has missed 5 more games due to injury over the last two seasons.

I'm happy to bow to those who've seen more of him, I dare say there are many on this forum, but he looks a player whose injuries have taken a toll. To be fair he was probably rushed back from a hamstring to play in the WC, but he was poor and I worry about his injury record when we're talking about what looks like a pretty desperate buy for tens of millions.

Those who are referencing Boateng's injuries but are dead set on Alderweireld puzzle me too, as the latter just had a long lay-off, but I'm nervous generally about signing players after injuries. Rightly or wrongly I interpret Bayern looking to offload Boateng now for fine money as an admission they feel he is damaged goods approaching the wrong side of 30.

Of course he is getting older, but it's not like he is a shadow of the player he once was. His composedness and vision are still there, and all our coaches over the last seasons had him play in the important matches (Carlo even let him play against Real straight from an injury without a league match to test his readiness).

From the Bayern forums...

Bayern will most likely sign Pavard if they sell Boateng. For Bayern, selling Boateng and buying Pavard would fantastic business, they will seal their CB partnership for the next 5 years with two top class talents (Sule and Pavard) while having the experience of Hummels alongside.

All poor Ed Woodward wanted to do was sign us up a new official club Boating partner like Bay Liner or Sea Ray, and has inadvertently caused this transfer rumour.

Wouldn't trust a single thing that Sky put out there, it's all geared towards their Sky Bet market and is for all intents and purposes, manipulation of the market. Fox and them will be a good match.

I can speculate too. I’d like to see us spend in accordance with clear priorities and perhaps coach some capability and leadership in, rather than spend by default. Bailly, Lindelof in, Fosu-Mensah out on loan, Smalling and Jones retained, Blind sold.

Injuries mate. If he wasnt injured, fine.

We should throw 50m at Pavard or De Ligt, the next world class Cbs in the making and already at a very good level

100% agree with this, watched De Ligt play for Holland and he was Telling Van Dijk where to go hes going to be something special, all ready showing leadership quality's

If fit he still would be the by far best CB in the Premier League, so you guys should be excited.

He wasn't fit at the WC at all by the way. Wasn't even certain to start.

He's still world class but has been injury prone. Bayern don't need him anymore because we have Hummels, Martinez and Süle (world class talent). Maybe Pavard too.

I would rather we didn't buy another young centre back when we already have Bailly, Lindelof and Tuanzebe to develop. I reckon we lack experience and quality so Alderweireld or Boateng are probably the best available who tick them boxes.

In terms of passing, Boateng is superb. He fits the footballing criteria that most are asking for. Also, it's worth noting that even despite his lack of speed, there are ways around that. Historically, Mourinho managed to coax a brilliant season out of John Terry in physical decline. If we play deep this season, then Boateng's physically decline should be nullified somewhat.

More long term thinking... So far past it he doesn't remember what a football looks like - more disaster prone than Smalling even... wtf are we doing ??

Don't forget Upamecano. Has the ability on the ball like Boateng and top defensive skills.

I thought he'd retired or got injured long term as it'd been that long since i heard anything about him. Turns out he's just languishing at Bayern not getting a game as he's not good enough.

Imagine my surprise when the rumours linking us to him seem to gather steam. No surprise whatsoever. Pitiful transfer market.

That's over the top, his physical robustness worries me and had a very poor World Cup but if he can stay fit he'll give us the experience and composure we're sorely missing at present. It looks a gamble I'll grant you.
