Jerome Boateng

Seems a bit like a signing to mirror Kompany! Kompany has more passion about him though.

It's the last opportunity to get a big fee for him, you already have his successor and are eyeing an other promising CB in Pavard. It's just good long term planning.
It leaves us with just two good CBs - three if you count in Martinez, who is a bit wasted there instead of playing DM.

Oh fecking hell please don't tell me there's an actual chance of signing him, especially for £50m.

Luckhurst taking the worst out of every situation in an attempt to wind people up, this board especially should be wise to his bollocks by now.

Lurkhurst is a wum but you can't deny what he's saying. Us approaching Bayern four days before the window closes, shows he is way down our list.

Signing Boateng would have been incredible 4 years ago. But he’s crocked. We have enough of those at the back.

Would probably presume any other club had some genius, secret intel on his incredible recovery if they went for him though

This'll only happen on deadline day as a panic buy if we don't get Alderweireld.

He hasn't recovered since Messi spun him and left him on the ground tbh.

Interesting perspective. Has he played at a level comparable to Hummels recently?
Last season he won almost the same percentage of duels on the ground and a much higher one in the air. He also created 3 big chances in his 19 league games, whereas Hummels had 0 in 26. Boateng had 1 mistake leading to a goal in those games, Hummels 2 in his. Both completed almost the same percentage of passes (~87%).
Hummels won and intercepted more balls, Boateng blocked more shots.

You'd still have time to sign a replacement as JP is pointing out though.
It doesn't look like we're getting him this summer though.

£50m lool. Rather be ripped off by Leicester and Spurs thanks. No wonder why Woody’s having a hard time this summer.

Not terrible, not great either all things considered.
I guess it's hard to look bad in a team that dominates that league in such a way.

Did he play CL much?

We play 6 matches less than you, though.

9 games (starting 8 subbed on 1 subbed off 1), same as Hummels.

So why have Bayern been offering him to every team in Europe all summer? Genuine question

They haven't. It was JB who came up with the idea to look a new challenge.

9 games, same as Hummels.

So basically he's still useful!

I wouldn't be adverse to him, I just don't really see the point at that price point.
I don't even think we should pay more than £40m for Toby - considering his contract situation.

If this isn't a smokescreen it's as bad as the Fellaini signing.

Not sure why everyone is acting like Boateng is some joke. He's still a damn good player.

Was he Injured for all of his missed games or could he have been rotated for game time? You do have 3 top quality CB if I'm not mistaken?

Going off that logic Jones proved his fitness during the World Cup also. So no need for a new shiny central defender...

Well that could be the case, but Jones has been injured nearly 3 months in a season since 2013 that's not the case with Alderwiereld. Though I feel the primary reason for buying a new CB is that we need an experienced and capable leader at the back and our current CBs are incapable of fulfilling that role esp against top opposition.

And I genuinely don't know, or understand the board on that one. Probably more to do with off the pitch stuff (salary?) than football.
Just out of curiousity, has he shown any noticeable decline due to the injuries or is he still very good when he plays?

Boateng's not a joke, but there's a very good reason Bayern are looking to get rid. He's not the player he was and Luckhurst, drama queen or not, has it right that it would be a sign of defeat if we get him given he is not one of our top targets.

You’ll have to read back, but I know I’ve read several posts here by people following Bundesliga closely and also Bayern, and who have stated that he has played well below par the last couple of seasons when playing.

He was benched in 7 league games last season where he possibly could have played.
Right now we have Boateng, Hummels, Süle, and optionally Martinez.

Okay cheers.

I hope this Boateng talk is just a smoke screen for Alderweireld or Maguire. IMO both are far better.

I feel like in buying Boateng we are helping Munich unload a player they clearly don't think is good enough and giving them over £40m for the honour, which they will then re-invest in a younger defender, with lots of potential......who they will prob then sell to us in 5 years for double his original price.

It seems to me that this is just a game of brinkmanship with Levy. Maguire and Boateng are smokescreens. Alderweireld wants to join United and after the transfer window shuts he loses a lot of value. Levy wants rid whilst his value is high and United know that.

Terrible player, like signing another Bailly but older and even more injury prone

I suspect this as well. I also suspect Levy will not be fooled that easily...

Jeez - whats the point of having a scouting network if this is what they can come up with !

He started in every important match he was available for, our CL clashes against Real above all (which ended his season last season).
Bringing him to the world cup was doing him a disservice after that, here it showed that he hadn't had enough time to recover, although he was still nowhere as bad as reading this thread would have you believe.

If someone said that, they would be wrong.

If we get Boateng in it almost smacks of "getting someone in for the sake of it" / to appease the fans. Hopefully we're just using him as a lever to get Toby a bit cheaper

Remember when everyone laughed at Liverpool's defence, and Klopp wanted Van Dijk to "solve" their problems at the back?

Only Southampton didn't want to sell, so Klopp didn't sign anyone despite their creaky defence, and a few months later he got his man - and it looks like it's a good fit (based on the half season VVD has been a Scouser).

Meanwhile we want Alderweireld, or Bonucci, or Maguire, but we'd also take Mina, or you say Boateng is available? Great, we'll take him. I mean, we only have 5 CBs (all full internationals), and Jose's only bought two of them. So obviously any fecking CB whatsoever is going to somehow be the answer to our all our problems...

Look, I get that we probably do need an experienced CB to play alongside Bailly (hopefully) but there's no sense of any strategy here. It's just throwing shit at the wall and hoping some of it will stick. And if we end spending £40-50m on Jerome bloody Boateng.... He's crocked, he's past it, there's a reason Bayern are selling him

Well said, except we have 6 CB on the books. I don't get chasing this fellow, Bayern don't sell unless the player is past it or injured most of the time. This bloke seems both. At least we had some good moments with Owen waste of 50 million on this chap.
