You can't go wrong with a free transfer like this. More than likely to chip in with goals. Could be ideal off the bench or in Cup competitions.

Not a starter but I wouldn't mind at all.

It's not like we are blessed with clinical finishers. It's a shame that idiot Van Gaal got rid of Chicharito. Defoe could do his job off the bench.

No problem with it. If he's happy being 4th choice striker and playing occasionally in the cups and possibly the EL, why not?

If he can score 15 goals for an absolutely atrocious Sunderland team, he's still got something left.

The same guys "hating on him" probably thought Henrik Larsson was amazing for us.

Goalscorer , decent squad player. If he got the same minutes Rooney has I know whom Id prefer.

Voted yes on the premise that he'd be behind Rashford and A.N.Other. Basically filling the bench spot in case of injuries and playing cup games when others need a rest.

He has 15 goals in around 3,000 minutes this season, while Rooney has 7 in around 2,000. So on average if he got the same minutes Rooney did he'd have 10 goals. Only 3 more than Rooney who hasn't even played up front all that often. And that's assuming he'd still score at the same rate he has for Sunderland which is unlikely imo, given he'd be playing less so wouldn't be as sharp and he'd have to deal with packed defences a lot more.

Funny that everyone is agreed that Rooney is nowhere near good enough for us anymore, yet some are happy to replace him with someone who'd barely be better.

Might make sense as cover if he is willing to take that. Minor investment, proven scorer, another option. He is also used to being a counter attack player so would suit Mourinho.

I would happily take Rooney out and replace with Defoe as 3rd/4th choice and at least you wouldn't feel its a wasted effort rotating him in for certain games. Rooney has looked rusty for too long! Also Rooney is £250k+ a week and Defoe would be c.£100k

1st Zlatan replacement, 2nd/3rd Rashford/ Marital, 4th Defoe

First "Is the Cl all that special" and now Jermaine Fecking Defoe . You can't make this shite up. This place is fecking depressing at times.

£100k/week?! For Defoe? No chance.

Depends on how it affects our other transfer plans imo. Obviously I wouldn't want him over any of the younger strikers we're looking at, but if he's in addition to one of those then what's there to lose? He certainly offers more than Owen did when we signed him.

If he is happy being bottom of the barrel, 10 starts plus 10 sub appearances a season, then by all means, but I doubt he would.

I think he would choose starting consistently over coming here. He has a shot at the world cup.

No. Wasn't good enough in his prime and definitely isn't good enough now, free or not.

That's not true. He's certainly good enough to be a squad player now, and if he'd been the attacking sub instead of Rooney and Lingard this season, we would be in the top 4.

Any scenario that involved signing Defoe would be to avoid playing Wayne fecking Rooney on the very rare occasions we have been forced to play Wayne Rooney in the second half of the season. Or is it that you would prefer that sort of role to be reserved for Luis Suarez?

We need a much better striker than Defoe to take the role Zlatan had this season. Rashford will still have the same role, while Defoe can take Rooney's, while Rooney heads to the Championship with Sunderland probably.

How far have we fallen gone from Griezmann to Lukaku to Morata to Hernandez now fecking Defoe :(

I dont think it is a decline to sign defoe.he is going to be an impact subsitute not main striker.he is a natural finisher and rashord and martial can learn from him.with both zlatan and rooney gone - not a very bad idea.
ofcourse the main focus is to bring a top striker.

No, we shouldn't be signing 34-35 year old players even as back up. Ibrahimovic was the exception but signing players who are about to finish their careers makes no sense.

Rashford, Ibra, Defoe, another striker

Sounds good to be

Would be a decent squad player on a free, exactly like Owen was. Nothing more, nothing less.

Tell me about it

Imagine the scenes if we signed Defoe. A player who got relegated, was quite frankly rubbish in the MLS and was dumped off by Spurs like 4 years ago. It would be madness and show a complete lack of ambition on our part.

We're Manchester United and we can sign anyone we want.... Lukaku, Griezmann and Chicharito all look like realistic possibilities.

Wow so much Defoe hate.

This guy has scored over 30 league goals in the last 2 seasons for one of the worst Premier League teams I've seen, why can't he come in as 4th choice?

We could bring a world class attacker in for Ibrahimovic
We could bring Defoe in for Rooney

No brainer for me

Yeah Henrik Larsson who had just come off setting up two goals in the CL Final is the same as Defoe who is coming off getting relegated with Sunderland.

 I can hardly believe it. This guy was kept on the bench by Berbatov and Robbie Keane while in his prime, but yeah sure let's sign him at Man Utd now.

Oh the irony. Begging our backup striker that we dumped a few years ago to come back and play for us doesn't "Show a complete lack of ambition on our part" does it?

Hernandez in the PL for United - Games 103 / Goals 37
Defoe in the PL for Sunderland - Games 90 / Goals 35

Chicharito was rarely a consistent starter for us. So those were often sub appearances.

Poor response, just compare that to the fact Defoe probably gets 1-2 good chances in his 90 minutes in an awful Sunderland side

compared to

Hernandez getting 1-2 good chances in his 15 minutes under one of Fergies best attacking United sides

It's funny. 2 seasons ago, apparently Ronaldo wasn't good enough for MUFC, even though he was scoring more goals than our entire team combined!
I think a lot of MUFC fans seem to believe we are better than we are.
I will say this: our attack is abysmal/atrocious and Defoe is a fox in the box....which happens to be exactly what we need. Martial, Rashford, Mata - their finishing is poor. Scoring 7 league goals per season for a MUFC attacker is embarrassing.

Defoe is a better finisher than all our current attackers. If he plays (when others are tired or injured), he will score goals. There is no doubt about that.
On a 1 year deal, free transfer and reasonable wages, I would take him in the team. if it works out, then great. If it fails, he will be gone in a year, so it doesn't make much difference.

Obviously, if we had Suarez, Messi and Neymar in our team, adding Defoe would be silly, but given that ALL our attackers are very poor finishers, to bring in a top quality finisher, with EPL experience would be an logical decision.
This. This. And this.

There's no down side and only positives. How many times have we said to return to SAF's 4 striker policy? Buy Belotti or Morata, Griezmann and get Defoe for free to play in the cups or in case of injury. He won't say no to joining us.

We play with one striker up front now so we do not need 4 strikers now.

Hernandez averaged 130 mins per goal.
Defoe averages around 190 mins per goal.

Defoe from 2009 (when he returned to Spurs) averaged 185 mins per goal (at Spurs).

His career average is 195 mins per goal, so his goal scoring is consistent with his career average.

Hernandez averages 200 mins per goal in CL, 122 mins per goal in La liga.
