Javier Pastore

I would love Pastore at the club, but signing him would mean a change in general formation imo, I don't think he would be comfortable in a 442.

For me, signing a player like Pastore would mean going to a 3 man midfield.

.................Carrick
.........Fletcher..Pastore
Valencia......................Nani
................Rooney

That is how I reckon Fergie would be aiming to go if we signed Pastore, which would obviously have an impact on the futures of Berbatov, Owen and Macheda (not saying all would leave, but there would have to be question marks). It would also require Rooney to get back to something like the player we know he can be.

I would also think we would need to sign another midfielder to compliment that formation (as a replacement for Scholes, Hargreaves), a box to box player. Never know though, we could just use the young lads and have Tunnicliffe, Pogba and Morrison to come in for Carrick, Fletcher and Pastore (though Anderson would obviously come in sooner)!

Based on my own judgement of the squad, I don't see us signing an AMC like Pastore (or Gourcuff), as Fergie will want any central midfielders signed to be comfortable playing in a 442, as I believe that is the formation the squad has been built for - it would need a big overhaul in the summer to change the squad balance to a 451.

The lad can even occupy Giggs role on the left in a 4-4-2. He'd just be a top notch singing, period.

Pastore usually plays in front of a 3 man midfield and doesn't do much defensive work so it'd be a big ask to move him in there and expect him to cope with the amount of work we expect our midfielders to get through.

This is definitely true. He needs a lot of energy behind him.

We don't have to adjust anything, all this only in a 3 man bollocks. This would be incredible if true.

Hopefully whoever we get really wants to play for United rather than use it as some sort of stepping stone to one of the Spanish clubs.

I'm thinking that if Madrid can play Ozil with just Alonso and Khedira behind him, then surely we could play Pastore with just Fletcher and Carrick behind him. Not that I think he's necessarily the right buy.

Ahhh, that would rule Pastore out then.

Fergie would get him addicted to fish & chips and classic whiskey collection, he'll never want to leave!

If that article is true it means Barca are super interested which means we would have no chance.

Doubt it is.

Im not surprised he is considering his options after getting thumped 7-0 last weekend by Sanchez and Udinese! I doubt there is much truth in the rumour though as we are going to be linked with every player on the planet between now and June! Would love him here all the same.

Shame it's goal.com he's the real deal this lad and easily worth £35 million in this market.

Remember Andy Carroll?

Total bullsh*t. Why would we be buying another midfielder when Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson have all just agreed new deals and with Scholes likely to be here another season, plus Gibson - why would SAF spend another 40-50k a week for another midfielder. I'd love him at United but I can't see it.

We need goals and creativity from midfield, Fletcher and Carrick don't really provide this - Anderson while showing potential hasn't really shown this too the level a Manchester United midfield requires. Scholes is aging and as much as we love the little fella his legs won't last forever.

Pastore will add talent to a United midfield that desperately needs some. As would a Schweinsteiger or a Hamsik et al.

:wenger:

Where do you expect us to bring reinforcements in next season?

It's certainly not required as much as the midfield. Them players you mentioned had to sign new contracts as they were ruining into their last 2 seasons. Means nothing.

Eh? Midfield is surely the main area we're looking at improving as it's where we're weakest.

I would put money on Scholes not staying on.

I'm not saying we don't need him. I think the article is crap but as for whether or not SAF will go for him I remain doubtfull. SAF has his senior midfield 3 in Anderson, Carrick and Fletch (all whom he clearly thinks can do the job otherwise he wouldn't have extended contracts on) and in reserve we have Gibson and the boys coming through the reserves. SAF has always given youth a chance so I can't see this situation being any different.
Like I mentioned in my first post - I'd love Pastore to come to United because he looks like the goal scoring centre mid we need - desperately, but will united spend, what will be a huge amount, on a player when we are well stocked in that area. When I say we are well stocked in that area, that does not mean I don't think it's up to the job, it's just the way I see it.

You'd better see it.:D

We are definitely replacing Scholes with a playmaker this summer. Whether Scholes retires or not. The only issue is whom. After all SAF clearly likes having up to 6 first team CM's.

Regardless we needed a midfield last year with the same numbers and we will need a midfielder this year. There would be no point letting Carrick and Fletcher go to acquire another one/two midfielders when Hargreaves is as good as gone and Scholes will be gone shortley. Not to mention there is never any guarenteed promises with youth.

I can pretty much assure you that we will be getting a centre midfielder. Whether or not he will be top class or someone younger, only time will tell. I don't see us needing someone up front or in defence.

Pastore ticks a lot of boxes we can assume (and somewhat know) about our transfer policy.

He is both top class and young

He is a marquee signing which would please the fans.

He is can create + score.

Possibly not in central midfield but I see no reason why he couldn't play on the left side of midfield in a 4-4-2, like Zidane did for Real. Evra provides most of the width for us on the left anyway, like Roberto Carlos did for that Real team.

He'd probably just instinctively cut inside though and it'd end up being an unbalanced 4-3-3 in that case.

If that article is true it means Barca are super interested which means we would have no chance.

This is probably just typical chinese whispers stuff from the media, but if United were in for him we've got to have a good chance.

Doesn't matter how much Barca want him - he wouldn't get in the team and has made noises in interviews suggesting he's already tunred both Barca and Madrid down to stay at Palermo and play regularly.

That said, given that United need a midfielder we'll probably see loads of this right over the summer.

Rather it would be the very same 4-4-2 we use with a 38 year old Giggs on the flank.
Giggs nowadays operates as a wide playmaker, just between the fullback and center back. Occasionally attacking the outside of the fullback, with Evra usually overlapping past him. A Pastore can do the same job with consummate ease. It is for that same reason we had been chasing David Silva whilst he was still at Valencia.
