Javier Pastore

Did not Paul Scholes play a lot freer role when he was younger? He was up in the box all the time... In 07/08 season we played three players in free roles, Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez... Because Ronaldo defended less Rooney and Tevez did a bigger contribution. Fletcher too plays in somewhat of a free role? He is everywhere, but he regulates it after his opponents. So can Pastore, he is far more equipped to defend than both Kaka and Rui Costa (whom by the way worked brilliant in a two man midfield in his days in Fiorentina, and that was probably where he had his peak). Zidane actually did quite a bit defensively, like Cantona he seemed to be everywhere.

Problem with comparing Kaka and Pastore is that Kaka is not really a playmaker. He is extremely technical and very fast, but not the best passer in the game, last season he was second only too Marcelo in uncompleted passes. Kaka is a secondary forward, he was a winger before he headed to Milan, and then Ancelotti gave him a new role, where he as you say kind of got carried by Gattuso, Seedorf, Pirlo (the brilliant playmaker at that team) and Shevchenko. After Sheva left, he struggled - you kind of look to your top men to step up after such a departure, and Kaka didn't. Pastore can do a lot of the things Kaka can do, he is fast, not quite the pace of Kaka but still a fast player, but he is a far better passer, better at the defensive bit, he is actually stronger in the body than Paul Scholes whom always have done a decent defensive job... I believe Pastore can too but it will be a lot easier for him to adapt to those changes as young as he is, compared to for example Sneijder whom will be 27.

Punchline: A free role is all about adapting to the rest of the team. As a central midfielder in England you do have to do your share of defending. In Palermo, that is not as important, that does not mean Pastore can't do it (And it is false to claim that he does not contribute to Palermo's defense at all). He would not be used the same way in Manchester United as he would in Palermo, he would play against better opposition in a regular basis, but he would also have better team-mates.

Last thought. We play a lot of 4-5-1... How valuable would not a man like Pastore be in that formation? We really lack such a man when we do play 4-5-1.

After Shevchenko left Kaka was top scorer in the champions league and won world player of the year so dont know how much more he could have stepped up

Which would be bad news for us. I'd rather they got Fabregas than this kid. There's nothing worse than facing a dribbling wizard of a midfielder, who can create.

I personally reckon Madrid will barge in with a blockbuster bid then offload Kaka.

I agree, I think he'd add an extra dimension to Barca.

The thing is they already have Ozil and Canales vying for the same role.

Again, this is Madrid were talking about. They've done it before.

True but last summer it seemed under Mourinho they adopted a less obvious transfer tact, I just don't see that being where the big money is spent by Madrid next summer, I think Jose will look for a big striker.

They wont do that with Jose in charge. Infact the only midfielder I'm certain will interest them is Schweinstieger.

I'm purely speculating, we could say the same about Barcelona having no need of him. Just with the Palermo owner suddenly changing tact and realising he may have a huge cash cow on his hands. The higest bidder will win this one I believe.

Yes. But it will be the biggest bidder amongst those that need him. Barca have space for another attacking midfield talent as Xavi ages and because they do rotate their team often. Real don't even if they sold Kaka.

Yea but even though they don't need him, some Spanish press today have been saying that Pastore is Jose's number 1 target. Admittedly it's the press but whilst I am willing to write it off, they sometimes do get things right. We'll see what the club wants if Marca get the unofficial tapping up policy going.

We shall see. Personally I have no doubts Schweinsteiger is the one Jose wants and will most likely get. Marca for me are just mischief making because Barca are interested. .

This man should be priority #1 to give our midfield some creativity and goals.

Honestly, where would he play in Madrid's 11? Would they play with Ronaldo up top as a striker? Because Ozil appears to have become the fan favorite in the side and I don't see them moving him to the right. Would they sit Di Maria?

Should be, won't be, look elsewhere.

Why wouldn't he? It's Madrid. They are a bigger draw with Latino players than Manchester United.

I support their bid if I could sit in a chair like that whilst watching the match

Javier Pastore pens new contract with Palermo - ESPN Soccernet

Palermo playmaker Javier Pastore has ended speculation linking him with a possible move to Barcelona or Real Madrid by agreeing a new contract with the Serie A club.

Pastore is reported to be a target for both Spanish sides having demonstrated his huge potential during his time in Italy with the Rosanero. The 21-year-old has scored seven goals in 16 appearances this season and also caught the eye last year.

But Pastore has now demonstrated his commitment to his current employers by signing a new contract at La Favorita.

"I have extended my contract with Palermo to 2015," Pastore told Corriere dello Sport. "I'm very happy, I wanted to stay here and the signature I put is the confirmation of my will to stay."

In a separate interview with El Grafico he said: "Maurizio Zamparini [president] loves me, we have a great relationship. I'm glad to hear that Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in me, they are two of the most important clubs in the world.

"It would be nice to go in club like them one day in the future but for now I'm good at Palermo."

/Thread I guess. Georgie Best won't be too happy about this. That's five players in six months. We only have Hamsik left.

So with Barca seemingly having signed every good young player in the world, and Real already having Kaka, Ozil and Canales, does that leave the door open for the likes of us and Chelsea for this kid?

Chelsea yes, us no.

Interesting. Chelsea don't spend that much these days do they?

Yeah, but that doesn't mean we need him. Whereas Chelsea do. We already have Anderson for that role and I really don't see Sir Alex buying someone else for a higher up position. Maybe a defensive minded central midfielder but we already do have Carrick and Fletcher.

He'll be off to Madrid next season I reckon with Kaka going where ever

If you watched AC Milan rather regularly you would see that he did not do as much as he did a few years earlier, despite doing as good on paper... His really big season was 05/06 and a couple of years before that. He just lost his fear factor. Might have been a case of bad managing else on the pitch, but the team just evaporated after Sheva 's departure... Despite Shevchenko also had been downhill in terms of performances a couple of years before he joined Chelsea. Kaka had the team built around him, 15 goals is not extraordinary in such a position in Italy by any means.

I am not sure about that. Palermo is not a huge club... And if a big clubs comes along, Italian clubs usually let their players depart... He will be rather expensive in any case. When that has been said, we are linked to all the biggest names in Europe, Ferguson might never have considered Pastore at all anyway... I feel very confident that Pastore would be a better player for Manchester United than Hamsik.

This might be a good thing if you look away from the extra money he would cost. At least he seems loyal. Tevez would never have signed a new contract with a club like Palermo, he would look to join a bigger club and more money. Ferguson almost never take advantage of contract/bosmans - I believe Owen and Blanc is the two exceptions. He signed Nani right after he signed a new contract with Sporting.

Cretin.

Pastore would be better four us than Hamsik. Pastore doesn't want to come here though.

Have we reason to believe this?

If this was the case when Palermo signed him in 2009. Manchester United had just signed Hargo, Anderson, Carrick. Despite Hargreaves had injured for a year Pastore could not know that Hargo's United career was over as it seems that it is today. Carrick has not been the same the past couple of years that he was in the beginning. As well as both Giggs and Scholes are older.... Our midfield is not what it was back then and it is pretty obvious if he was needed.

Manchester United had a lot of competition for him in the squad... He was a unproven talent at the time, his status today is something completely different. Now he is probably confident that he can play in any club in the world. Nor was there any confirmation that United indeed made a offer for him back then what so ever. I have never seen a quote or read a interview where Pastore says he does not want to join Manchester United. I've only read the rumours in here. Carlos Tevez went to a interview in a United shirt, he said Manchester United was his dream - apparently that was all a lie or he just got some sort of mental breakdown based on his quotes after joining City.

It's not rumours, I can't be arsed going through it all again.
