Javier Hernandez | 2013/14 Performances

It's only been in recent weeks that Moyes faith in him has been justified, imo. He had some pretty abysmal performances early season.

It's only been in recent weeks that he's started in his actual position, in fairness.

Hernandez was great when he came on though, notably after Welbeck had made a good run and cut-back. I prefer both to Young by quite a distance.

If Hernandez was able to play in any other position than as a central forward, he might've played more games.

That's our worst problem. He can do a job there, he can do a job here.... When we need a players playing in their preferred positions where they're most effective.

And anyone saying he kept Hernandez out of the side last season is a spastic.

It's not Welbeck's fault that Hernandez can't play on the left wing as well as he can to get into the starting XI.

This+Valencia.

Welbeck isn't good enough to start for a top team either. He's not got a killer instinct and far too often is happy to just play it simple. He's a good player mind you, like Hernandez, just not united quality. Hernandez has been terribly managed though. He should be getting 30 mins every game at least, not 5 minutes once every 3 games.

I agree about Welbeck. I think Hernandez is the perfect super sub for any top 4 team and a huge difference maker.

Which we currently are with Welbeck. My point is that Hernandez would've gotten more gametime if he was able to do a job in any other position considering the quality we got upfront.

I see your point. But I was, speaking in general, about what sir Alex used to do as well. Remember Carrick in central defense and Fletcher at right back? Rafael in central midfield?

Early season... when exactly, you said he was dire in few games as a striker, but looks like you actually can't remember those.

Good cameo. Unfortunately has not played as well when he had got few chances earlier.

He's at least been good in the past, but yeah, the wings are in need of a complete overhaul. Good wingers and a good central midfield would mean either Hernandez or Welbeck up front would score goals, so arguing about which of the two has been worse this season isn't going to really get anywhere - it's not where the problem is.

When exactly was Welbeck poor as centre forward?

Today, for starters.

And anyone saying he kept Hernandez out of the side last season is a spastic.

Welbeck hasn't been pulling up trees on the left wing, let's be honest. He can "do a job" but he hasn't been excellent out wide.

That was due to injuries though.

But you'd definitely play your best central midfielder in his natural position, surely? Also countless times of starting Giggs for 'experience'? We all knew its gonna be a bad game, when we see his name on the first team. But that's been, discussed to death.

Lack of depth in our team is a big, concern. So has been our managers' team selection. Hernandez wouldn't have started anyway, but between him. And young, its a no brainer.

He's a great sub, probably better even than Ole, but he hasn't any business starting when Welbeck or RVP are fit.

If he doesn't like it he can leave at the end of his contract.

I would prefer to see Young ahead of Hernandez on either of the wings 10 out of 10 games though.

I felt that with the type of balls Januzaj put in today, right across goal, there you would have found Hernandez at the end. It's what he does best, and defenders still don't know how to deal with it. Welbeck tried to often to offer the pullback, but it rarely pulled off because the ball across goal was easier, and it's where he should have gone every time. I would prefer to see Hernandez start furthest up the field with Welbeck behind and Januzaj on the left, and continue putting those balls across goal.

Never said he has. The point is Hernandez can't really play in any other position competently apart from up front.

Welbeck is versatile enough to play out wide competently and that is why he played a lot of games on the left last season.

For some reason, earlier in the season people were using this against Welbeck and were saying he was keeping Hernandez out of the side last season.

Ah, fair enough. Yeah, Welbeck wasn't keeping Hernandez out of the side last season.

And since when "today" means "in the games before"? And even if it means, does that mean we should have dropped Welbeck today because we could guess he was going to have a bad game(which he wasn't)?

As long as Van Persie and Rooney remain unavailable this is what should be happening.

He looked superb when he came on. Tough season for him so far but that was really impressive.

Can I call him a bottler for fecking up that one on one and not taking a penalty?

Unless he has a pulled hamstring or something I cannot understand why he didn't step up. Hernandez takes them for Mexico, he's taken them for us before. Of all our available players nobody is better in the box. Was he so injured he couldn't take a short run up and score?

Have to thank him for saving it at the end. But it comes down to his famous touch which led to the Sunderland goal. He is so good but it amazes me how his touch just gets worse.

He looked like he could barely stand.

Can't fault his heart, but some of those first touches were borderline comical. Which is weird, he's looked much better lately.

Still think he's 3rd choice, and first choice to bring on late.

He's been piss poor this season. His first touch is horrible and he just doesn't offer anything to our game. Maybe it's time that he moves on. Like that, he will just be 4th choice striker and rightly so

His general play actually improved a fair bit last season, I think he could still develop into a top tier striker - but he needs more games.

Kudos for the goal, but that performance was embarrassing. His touch was arguably the worst it's ever been.

Pretty sure he indirectly cost us the match with an atrocious first touch in his own half. He's a fantastic sub when chasing a game, but there's no way he should be starting unless the other three are injured.

To be fair to him - in comparison to Danny Welbeck, he had a decent game... in comparison to a normal performance though, he wasn't great. Still, at least he ran his bollocks off, and scored a goal, which is more than you can say for most.

Also, his goal was such a great fecking moment... it now doesn't mean a fecking thing :(
