Will be tough to bench welbeck though. been having a very good season so far. that said, in games like pool and spurs, i wont be surprised to see hernandez start. the knack of scoring goals is incredible.

Chica > Danny Period

Chica is different from Danny. But what Chica does (movement, making space and scoring goals), he does really really well. Danny has a whole other list of attributes, but he hasn't been able to be truly outstanding in any one of them just yet. Honestly I'm still not 100% convinced by Welbeck's partnership with Rooney ie. that they bring the best out of each other.

That being said, Danny is a lot younger and less experienced, but he's got a great attitude, so he can only get better.

im just glad we have both. two excellent prospects that will terrorize defenses for years to come. these two are basically the reason berba isn't getting playing time. whenever one of them reaches some good form, it's hard not to reward that. looks like on current evidence, hernandez will get the nod ahead of welbeck against liverpool. I wouldn't mind Chicha starting on the bench again though. Incredible impact sub

Good post.

AVB described Cheech as "one of the best forwards in the world" in his post match interview.

He reminds me so much of Ole in terms of the type and timing of his goals. We are lucky to have gotten him for 6 million. His impact pissed on many more expensive players in the league.

Chicharito is better coming off the bench.Danny tires the defenders with his pressing and his constant runs behind them, we have a good balance in terms of strikers.

Yeah, agreed. Hernandez is a devastating weapon against tired defenders.

That said, his link-up play has been really good in his last couple of games. Must be pushing for a start soon.

It will be interesting to see if SAF tries to play Chicharito with Welbeck and Rooney on a regular basis, besides a 4231 with Welbeck on the left I'm not sure how that would work.

The best thing about Hernandez is that almost all his goals are "important" goals. He'll rarely score a 4th or 5th goal in a rout or a consolation in a defeat. He'll always be there scoring late equalisers, winners or first goals in important comebacks.

Deduct his goals and we would be 7 points down, more than double any other players' on paper contribution.

Fergie admitted after the match that he'll have a selection problem. Hernandez on form is arguably the best finisher in the league, he could be crucial for the run in.

Yeah, he even said that he probably should've started with Hernandez. Guess we'll see him up front from the kick-off against Liverpool. Even if his contribution has been marvellous so far, I can't help but feel that he's got another level or two before he's at his very best, and when he is he'll win us more games. Many more games!

His performance yesterday is why I have an issue with Plech's "Turning on Hernandez"-thread.

If he performs, he'll get the plaudits, and if he plays shite, we'll say as much. He's a player whose overall contribution is seldom great, bar his goal threat, so when he's not on song and doesn't score, people will not be entirely staisfied. His last two outings have been positive, long may it continue!

Yes I've noticed this too. He does seem to score important goals as you say - winners, equalisers etc.

He's a pure goalscorer, I couldn't care less if he does feck all else but score a goal or two every game, or most games. If he gets 20-25 goals a season doing nothing but scoring, I'll be delighted.

Going by SAF's comments, he'll start against Liverpool. I hope he smashes a hat-trick past them, he's never gotten one for us yet.

Hell of a leap for someone who isn't that tall.

Wonder why Danny starts ahead of him so much then...

The main reason Welbeck often plays ahead of him is because he offers more to the all-round play, and has been playing well this season.

For me, Hernandez needs a second striker in behind him to provide him with support. When Rooney's playing well, he works well with Hernandez, but a major problem for us has been that Rooney hasn't been playing well. If Rooney can find his best form again as our playmaker, then Hernandez will thrive.

Given what Fergie said post match he's surely guaranteed to start against Liverpool.

His technique is brilliant, the way he jamp up yet kept his head down all done on purpose keeping in mind that he had to hit the ball perfectly. Many professionals often dont acknowledge the fact and its the reason they miss free headers occasionaly.

Don't call him Chica :(

Hernandez
Chicharito
Chicha
Whatever
But not Chica ffs; it means little girl in Mexico.

Goals from a variety of players has always (maybe not every season) been an enviable characteristic of Fergie's teams.
It would have been tough to pull Hernandez out when he was in "I can't miss" form. By the same token Welbeck has had great runs of form in between injuries. And don't forget he also scores on a regular basis too!
What a great problem to have! Expect them both to get extended runs in the team.

Yeah that's meaningless in Spanish. It's just 'Chica', it means girl; don't call him Chica or he'll smash your face in.

Ok, Chicharito it is. ;)

And just to add to the comment on his header, I thought it was amazing how high he jumped, that he actually had to make adjustments downwards to make sure he re-directed the ball perfectly. I love this guy.

Only criticism of him is he should've hit the target at 1:05. Next time... ;)

Welbeck for now. Done nothing to warrent benching and would hate to knock his confidence at the moment. Hernandez great on Sunday, though. Far sharper, touch better, hardly any waste. We're becoming a flipping cliche, this 'everything coming together after Christmas' thing...Tony, Rafael, Chicarito, Scholesy..so many of them hitting TOP form at the same time. Great to see.

Hernandez is form is such a useful player to have, whether from the start or as an impact sub.

His sheer pace immediately gives tired teams reason to withdraw, allowing us to win the midfield battle as evident vs Chelsea.
