Also like someone has already noted Hernandez has had a stop-start season. No consistent run in the team and injuries, no proper pre-season and it's led to a poor bit of form. It's to be expected. Luckily goals have been flowing from our other players this season. I'm confident he still has some important goals in him yet this season.

If his goals get us 6 points again in the second half of the season it'll be a great return, despite not being at his absolute best.

(compared to Rooney's 2 points, Jones' 2 points, Nani 1 point, Welbeck/Berbatov 0 points)

Hernandez'ssszzzz poor awareness of patterns of play etc outside of the 18 yard box make it very difficult for other players and easy for the opposition. Don’t get me wrong we can live with it for the majority of games but at the highest level it becomes and inderence.

He helped barcalona press us so high against wemberley because he didn’t work pique and puyol. He could give the pair of them 5 yards but instead he allowed them to press high up…playing ito his hands but his timing of run was awful, often being in excess of 10 yards offside. He needs to learn to vary his run. He looks for the channels ALLLLL the time. The likes of shawcross and wheater will struggle with him but as it becomes predictable better efenders will simply step up, press the game but us under greater and greater pressure. He needs to learn that sometimes he can drop 10 yards and that will create him as much space as his pace over the top would.

Also, how successful have his runs in the channel been?? I can only think of the chelsea game at ot in may when he has benefitted.

I love hernandez. He will always always always score goals, and important ones at that. But as somebody else pointed out he maybe better used as a super sub as centre forwards that "just score goals" ie ruud, owen (hay day) etc tend to not be so successful in top sides as better teams require the goals PLUS involvement in other aspects of play.

Ruud didn't "just score goals." His all around game was tremendous.

I just wanted to bump this.

I thought yesterday was his best allround performance in a while. Good movement as usual, but it was his link up play, and ability to hold up the ball against strong Stoke-defenders, which pleased me the most.

Not back at his deadly best, but that coolly dispatched penalty should give him some confidence, and it seems he's been working in the gym, to be able to have an influence also in games where we control proceedings entirely against a team defending deep.

I said the same thing in the post match thread, I was shocked to see that someone had claimed that Hernandez was "a bit headless-chickeny".

This is exactly why I told people that I didn't think Cheech would be just a finisher. I do agree it's his best overall performance I've seen in some time. I think it will get better in the future as well. It's nothing terribly obvious but I noticed how he's tried to change things up a bit. There was one pass unsuccessful pass that was attempted for Berba. Although it was unsuccessful, it showed that he has some vision for the pass. If the pass had made it to Berba, he would have been through for at least a shot on goal. Nothing breathtaking but good to see.

Keep up the good work Cheech

Gave us an immense lift after he came on and, of course, got us the equalizer. I'm just disappointed that we didn't manage to get more crosses into the box for the little man to attack after his introduction cos he showed he could leave Luiz and Cahill for dead at will. Plus, for all those who criticize his build up play there were more than a few knock downs and good passes to teammates today. But beyond that he puts the ball into the back of the net. The first half we showed zero willingness to strike it in good areas. You can never accuse Hernandez of being shy. He's not afraid to miss. And when he does get a clear chance you know he ain't screwing it up.

Well done Hernandez. Could be a hugely important goal in the title race.

Could be a very important goal in the run in. very good header.. we should have put in more crosses though.

I'm pleased for him that he managed to get a goal today. He hasn't been his usual self as of late, and he hasn't been able to get in the team, but that could all be about to change now.

We've missed those crucial goals.

He's looking a lot more like the player we know. Fergie's got a few things to consider up front because he surely has more goals to deliver in the months ahead. His movement when he came on was so hard for them to pick up.

And he's right. Hernandez is back in form. We could see that against Stoke, but he proved it today.

SAF's comments seems to suggest he could start next week.

Great to see Hernandez back and playing well. He was good on tuesday and as Fergie says his movement when he came on today was outstanding.

He still lets us down so much in the build up. Crucial goal but he did so many other things wrong. I love Chicharito but he needs to improve his link-up play. I cringe when he gets the ball out side of the box lately because most of the time it ends up with us losing possession. Putting Scholes on helped to even that out though. When in form his link-up play is at least competent, I wish he could gain some of that back.

His movement is so good, watching the game live I thought 'How have Chelsea left him unmarked in there?'

Yeah I just hope team's don't start resorting to what they did early doors against the little man. He was on fire at the start of the season only to get kicked out of the games at home against Chelsea and away at Stoke. Then when he came back he scored winners for us against Everton, Swansea and that and then got injured against the Villa (although that was more his own doing).

His record this season is 1 goal in every 3 games in spite of his injuries and we all know with his abilities he'd score many, many more if he can avoid injury again. But there will be many more that try to 'Ashley Cole' him:

Did we watch a different game? Exactly what did he do wrong?

Thought this was his best game in a whilst really. I actually thought he did well in the build up, something that's struggled with before, he was doing some nice lay off's, attempting to hold the ball up. Best thing though, he's actually discovered a first touch.

Still to many wild around the corner passes though.

Great for him to score such an important goal and gain us a point, which could prove big in the title race. Hopefully this will get his season going properly, and there's more to come from him in the last 3 months of the season.

Much better build up play and a great goal - the movement before the header was brilliant

He's obviously very good at making runs and stretching the defense, but like I said, his link up play is currently horrible. His first touch and passing let him down a lot lately. I still think he is very out of form in regards to this because I've seen him be much better.

Care to point out some examples from today's match? I can remember more than a few top moments from Hernandez in the build up today like the header down to Rooney, a touch off to Rooney for a shot, a short square to Welbs that led to the 2nd goal...Can't really remember any of our attacking moves breaking down with Chico against Chelsea. Open to being shown otherwise..?

You are talking out of your arse. He didnt do anything wrong really apart from beeing offside 1 or 2 times.

I remember a few times when he was on the wing and play broke down because of him. Maybe I was exaggerating originally. I just don't feel he contributed much at all aside from the goal. He may have done better than I gave him credit for I guess, but I still prefer Welbeck in almost every department.

Not sure what you're talking about. Did you watch the stoke game? his link-up play was good and even today it wasn't that bad. Yes, it needs improvement but it's not as bad as you make out

Couple of good knock downs and we looked so much more threatening with him on the pitch - defenders are just scared of him and this gives everyone else a little more space and a lift. Great goal too,

We don't have enough of such strikers, the others might have made Giggs cross look like shit. You need to attack the ball man. I was praying as feck that SAF does not bring on Berba. Noway he moves into that space.
