Opposition managers will set themselves up to combat what they think SAF will play which is usually Rooney and Berba -neither of whom currently play off the shoulder of the last defender.

Thus when Hernandez comes on the oppostion find it difficult to adjust to changing their setup as Hernandez askes different questions of the defence.

When Rooney and Berba play I dount we play any balls over the top. However when Hernandez was on we were looking for the quick ball from deep in behind the defence more often.

When he starts a few games in a row, I think people will begin to lower their expectations.
He is a great impact player, but nothing more than that at this time.

I have enjoyed watching Welbeck more this season.

Of course I am delighted about the goals Hernandez has scored, but judging him as a player, I am not overly excited.

Of course he has done very well.

But he is not a great player that I am excited over.

Do you smell the shit you talk?

So he didn't get you excited when he scored the only goal away at Valencia? You didn't get excited when he scored two away at Stoke? (including the wonderful, inventive backwards header). He has scored vital goals already, you must surely have got excited over him.

Winner at WBA too, no? Hes becoming our new Ole and he looks even younger than a baby ... which makes no sense.

Right now hes a fantastic impact player to have and I hope we continue to exploit his pace with occasional balls over the top from Scholes for him to beat the offside trap.

I'm just giving my opinion. I have said many times, I really like Hernandez, and am surprised by his contribution already, but I am being realistic. I will be surprised if he becomes a starter. In my opinion, his overall game just doesn't have enough. Do you think he has the talent of Rooney or Berbatov? Be realistic.

Regarding Rooney and Berbatov, not every player has that kind of talent they possess. Is Hernandez as talented? No he isn't, but he is a goalscorer and that alone can be enough to start him in matches. His all-round game isn't as bad as a few in here would have you believe, but he's young and learnin' anyway :smirk:

certainly has as much in terms of goal scoring, which is what matters really. Was Michael Owen as talented as Berbatov and Rooney when he was in his prime?

Does he need to have to be, to be a goalscorer?

Gerd Muller, Jimmy Greaves,Paolo Rossi,Lineker....great goalscorers.I wouldn't say they had the all round talent that Rooney or Berba have but boy did they have the knack of popping up at the right time.Soetimes yoy have to acknowledge that it's a real talent and instict, of a different kind

When Johnmufc mentions talent, what does he mean.

Does he mean as I suspect, that Chica can't control the ball as well as Berba. He can't find a pass that Rooney can. He can't hold the ball up like Berba or beat a player for skill like Rooney in his pomp.

Because no, he probably isn't as good at those things as Berbs and Rooney. But he's got some phenomneal attributes which are underrated. He will offer plenty of pace, his off the ball running is phenomenal and he can score plenty of goals.

We've seen v Tottenham he can run back and defend well when needed, and we've seen how good he is at scoring all types of goals.

So yes, he is a player you get excited over. He's a player you get excited over because despite his low exposure and market value when we signed him, he's become integral to every premiership away win we've had this season. You get excited when you see him scoring goals against big teams like Chelsea and Valencia. You get excited when you see him come on against Blackpool and change the game.

Did you think that Solskjaer had the natural talent of Rooney or Berbatov? But he became a star at this club. And Hernandez is having a more immediate impact at United than Ole did.

I think he's a better header of the ball than both of them, quicker and has better movement off the last man.

Okay, maybe I am not appreciating what he does possess. He has great predatory instinct, and this can be invaluable. But when I take everything into consideration, I just don't see him becoming a starter for us. A great third or fourth choice? Yes, but I don't see him as a starter. I would love him to prove me wrong.

This is absolutely where I am too.

He is a perfect impact player - I do hate this term - but Chicharito will score lots of goals. Starting a match in big games is much different, he must hold the ball up, create chances, be aware of his team mates, and play forward passes. He is a poacher, and not the type of player I can see starting because he is limited.

What is third or fourth choice though?

With how many different games and different tactics we use, if someone is getting the third most games as a striker, he's still a regular starter. Chica's worth so far has gotten us where we are.

Why does he have to hold the ball up?It's ridiculous notion that all strikers have to have this attribute. Not all great goalscorers held the ball up, some simply put the ball in the fecking net

He's 22 ffs. If he can take care of himself physically and therefore keep his element of speed, he'll learn more trades every year, become a better player with every game and might be quite a different player (a way better one) in 2-4 years. I'm just glad he's positive, humble and loyal, and he's been pretty impressive in his first season in a proper league. One of my favourite players right now.

quality player and real good to see him doing well. when he missed the furst chance i was shocked as i thought that was guranteed a goal. Great work from the scouts to buy before him world cup started

It was an attractive goal, mainly because of Giggs. I do love Hernandez but he is not a starter kind of player.

Maybe not yet he isn't but that's where the concept of developing and maturing as a player comes in. Not that I'd expect you to understand that.

As for your comment about hold-up play in relevance to us playing attractive football...Since when did holding the ball up become fundemental to an attacking, attractive brand of football? David Villa is hardly Sheareresque in holding it up yet the teams he's played for have played some of the most sumptous football you'll see(Valencia, Barca, Spain). I'd hardly class Van Persie as excellent at that skill either yet his teams play quality stuff too.

Please expand on that, why could he not play up alongside a striker that could hold up the ball ie Berbatov?

Surely his pace, movement and finishing ability is such that he'll put away chances if they're given to him. The Stoke game is a perfect example, you wouldn't expect the person to torment a team of giants would be a little fella but it worked perfectly as they couldn't keep up with his movement.

It's all well and good having someone who can hold the ball up but scoring is the main aim of the game and this lad does that very well and he doesn't care how. Now i can understand him not starting as a lone striker but in a pairing why not, he's the archetypal little man of the "little man, big man" partnership that has been used for decades and is still used now.

Giggs would not have been able to do anything attractive if there was no Chicharito to pass to.

Did you hate van Nistelrooy?

Maybe Kevin Nolan is the missing piece in our jigsaw?

If we sign him, we'll get the sexy football we all crave.

What about Hernandez's excellent first touch?

Because he is born a poacher style of player. He cannot transform or develop into Berbatov, he doesn't have these talents, but he does have some very useful talents. Villa and Van Persie have excellent control, they can turn in tight spaces and play the forward pass. With Chicharito, he usually controls the ball and passes it back.

This is a good post and I kind of agree. He is an excellent partner for Berbatov but I am still not sure he is good enough to start for United. He is just unable to damage the opponent with the ball unless he is in front of goal. This will sound strange but yes he will damage them by scoring goals, but so would Darren Bent, Huntelaar or Inzaghi. He doesn't have anything else to his game.

Maybe Scholsey just used the wrong turn of phrase by saying 'excited' but I agree with the general sentiment unless he improves a lot he won't have enough to his all round game to become a regular starter.

Probably the best option in the world off the bench, wouldn't want anyone else, but you need that something extra that Berba, Rooney and imo Welbeck have to be a starter in a top club.
