I don't see why everyone is so aggravated by his passing back into the midfield. After he does it he turns on his defender and makes a direct run towards goal. As the team becomes more familiar with him Scholes and Carrick will loft balls in for him to run onto.
Haven't read back in the thread to see who is aggravated by it but, I was one of the people that commented that he'll need to vary his play a little or he stands to become too easy to mark.
Having seen him only in Youtube compilations and then the few friendlies before the WC, in the WC and then for us - the one observation I've made is that when he receives the ball, his first thing is to pass it back to someone - quick and then make a run behind.
That's well and good if once in a while he'll receive the ball and pass it forward or even take it on and then run with it.
If a lay person like me can see the obvious pattern of his play and even not being a footballer other than playing in school - as a person defending him, I'd just let him get the ball and pass it to whoever he wants backwards. Don't let him get behind me with his pace, stand off of him OR let him pass it back and position myself in a way that soon as he turns that he'll run smack into me (usually a big defender or CM player).
The latter happened when he pinged the ball back and then went to turn only to run into Konchesky.
These are professional clubs and they'll have done their scouting and preparing. You can't prepare for all the time he is moving around and timing runs etc except to be aware of him on the field but, they can prepare easily if 95% of the time he receives the ball deep all he does is give it up - makes it easy to defend against.
He'll need to develop more in that part of his game if he is going to be able to suck defenders in so he can turn and spin on them.
