Coming off a good World Cup, and a decent end to the season. Pretty much the same position as Ronnie Post-World Cup 2006 tbh. If anything, Hernandez is actually better, having had a more consistent goalscoring record compared to Ronaldo at that point in his career...

Ronaldo being a winger...

I rate Hernandez highly but its useless even mentioning Ronaldo at this point. Lets just see if he is better than Berbatov this season.

Ronaldo had also taken his national team to the final of euro 2004, the semi finals of world cup 2006.. and was one of the most entertaining players on the planet despite being so relatively young.

The only thing missing from his game was goalscoring consistency and he ended up being more than just prolific but quite sensational, though he has lost the flair side to his game and I still don't rate him as a natural finisher though he has great power in both feet and has improved his movement and anticipation.

Hernandez looks to be the better natural finisher in my opinion, but to say he can be a better 'player' is going too far, Ronaldo was a sensational talent, amazing dribbler, set piece taker etc.. Hernandez has shown only good striking qualities and the odd glimpse of potential top class vision but too early to tell and certainly these so called pundits have seen way too little of him to make such outlandish claims.

When on his game, he was entertaining, no doubt about that, but he was still incredibly raw. He only turned it on every three or four games.

The post-World Cup hysteria was the catalyst in Ronnie's development.

I feel everyone is underrating the Mexican league. It certainly isnt like the MLS, it has some proper players, many of whom would not look out of place in Europe....

Good, not great. He was pretty much on the same level as Nani was last season...
He had been very good. Then our play changed to a more fluid type of play and Ronaldo/Rooney/Saha turned it on from the start of the season, which helped Ronaldo a lot in being perceived as much better than last season. A player will naturally look even better when playing in a brilliant team.

Seriously, how can you compare Hernandez to Ronaldo?

Obviously Hernandez is a wonderful young talent, but Ronaldo was pretty much a once off, I highly doubt that Hernandez will be named WPOTY when he's 24 years old.

If he keeps scoring at the rate of a goal a game he might. ;)

Totally different type of player. Hernandez is an out and out striker. This season will define him. I wont be surprised if he gets 20 this season.

In all fairness, when Ronnie claimed that he'd be given that award one day, prior to the 06/07 season, I remember people laughing.

Still, I agree with you on the comparison part. He hasn't played a proper match for us yet, can't be expecting that level of performance.

He's really got a buzz surrounding him though, I looked at the guardian journos season predictions thing, and he was pretty much mentioned as one to watch/signing of the season in all but a few of them. Obviously doesn't mean that's likely, but it gives an idea of the reputation he's created on people that don't have a vested interest in him doing well.

It's very hard not to get ridiculously excited about Hernandez now. I can hardly believe the potential partnership he could strike up with Rooney if he keeps progressing.

His partnership with Berbatov has more potential in my opinion; he has been crying out for a player who regularly attempts to beat the offside trap.

Think the Berbatov one is also a useful one in the making, but the thought of Rooney behind Hernandez is frightening. Saying that, I'm not sure how likely it is given the way Rooney has been utilised over the past year.

There's still a part of me, despite the season Rooney had last year, that believes his best position is still behind the front man like he played when we had Van Nistelrooy and Saha, but that would ruin the beautiful understanding that he has with Valencia.

I suppose the beauty of our squad at the moment is that we have the potential to completely change the shape of our attack during a match.

Remember reading a tweet somewhere that he had scored a hat trick in around 1-2 mins in training

Expectation levels are running way too high for this lad imo he looks fantastic but people are expecting way too much from him = leading to disappointment. If he gets anywhere near ten i'll be happy.

I agree Lawman, everyone seems to be hyping him at the moment. Lou Macari was saying he will be the difference for United this season on Sky Sports News.

He's going to score goals as he seems to the type of player to do so. But people need to lower their expectations a little. Still, hope to see him play at some point tonight at OT!

Talent is talent lads, we've pointed out since we've watched the you tube clips that our "little pea" is something that we've lacked in the fwd line, noting wrong from the pundits expecting something from him.

I mean, he did it in the world stage, he did it against Chelsea, what else could you expect ?

The hype was certainly huge even before his debut for us but Little pea just didn't care and focused only on he's football and how to become better, these are the attributes of a great player.

Expecting 10-15 goals is something we can all do if he gets enough playing time that is...

If he doesn't score that much, it wouldn't be disappointing, as I've just witnessed a striker + pace + neat first touch + good in the air and for whats more he costs less than 10m but already looks like a 15m in the making...

This. With this kind of versatility, we could possibly even change tactics and shape without even changing personnel. The potential for adjustments is very promising, especially as a young player like Hernandez gets better and more well rounded. Or if, god forbid, we end up having to play from behind with all three of our strikers on the field, we'd have some degree of fluidity and movement in the shape of our front line.

Lots of Chicharito shirts being sported outside OT today. Apparently outselling Rooney and Nani too #mufc

Chicharito shirts apparently temporarily sold out in the megastore today. Having to get more printed to meet demand #mufc

I hope the guy can live up to the expectations hehe.

He's an exciting player so can see why his shirts are selling but me personally, no way would I wear a shirt with 'Chircarito' on the back. Maybe my view will change in time.

To be honest, if he turns out to be a big hit and he has Hernandez on his back instead, i might probably get his shirt

He'll start on th bench tonight. Ferguson loves having an explosive impact player at his disposal. There will be a few tired legs out there around the 70th minute mark with fitness not quite as high as it could be as its the first game of the season.

I'm going to have him down as an anytime scorer.

Already scored on his United debut. Already scored coming on as a sub.
Time for his first hat trick - nothing less will do. Chico will win the golden boot this year.

:)

Rubbish, sell him, he's the new Berba and I for one don't want him at United. Lazy.

I loved his celebration when Giggsy scored, he was running to the back post for a tap in, the ball went in and he was in the goal with his arms up :D
