I think Hernandez should start alongside Berbatov against Chelsea. If Wayne were unfortunate enough to pick up an injury this season, a good Berba Hernandez partnership might be very important

Agree with this, Wayne will undoubtedly start the season for us against Newcastle. Lets test Berba and Henandez first and foremost in a mostly meaningless fixture.

With certain players having only appeared for between 45 and 90 mins in a relatively easy game, "test[ing]" partnerships will be the last thing on Sir Alex's mind, I would imagine.

And it's not as if we will learn anything from seeing two players in a single game. At best, we might be one game closer to an understanding, but that understanding could take months or even an entire season to fully develop.

If it's going to happen as quickly as we all hope that it does, it really doesn't matter if they play together in this one game. And if it doesn't happen as quickly as we all hope, one game is unlikely to have a profound effect, anyway.

However, if Newcastle come to Old Trafford, defend resolutely, and perhaps nick a goal as they did a few years ago, with many of the players who will start that game having only played, at most, 180 minutes in preseason, we may need our best goalscorer to win us the game.

Was asked in the presser regarding Hernandez and Rooney pairing up and basically said well we haven't played them together yet but, we know what Hernandez brings in pace and (his favorite word) penetration. But, it's not a problem we've played 2 strikers in the past, we won't play it every week but, we'll play it.

Found that bit very interesting in that almost like there will be more of a emphasis on 1 striker. Unless he doesn't consider Berbatov as a striker, we might be seeing only 1 of our strikers in a lot of games?

Sad really, my best memories of utd are playing 442 but it seems like it's not a viable option against quality opposition anymore. He's going to struggle to keep all of our forwards happy this year although sending Wellbeck and Mame out on loan has helped.

That's the thing - we did play 3/5 games with 2 strikers but, will we continue to do so going into this season?

We setup with 2 strikers against the likes of Spurs, Villa, Shitty normally in the past but, will we continue to do so this season? We even did against the dippers but, that very likely could change (or did change at home last year).

What about in the CL - the lesser teams we played 2 strikers but, will we continue?

His words seemed to imply more of a 1 striker setup than we had in the past - which would mean less games for our 5 strikers.

Possibly - they may also play fewer games.

We played 2 strikers last season but most times it was against weaker opposition so it wasn't a risk. Also if we do play Rooney and Hernandez both have the legs to get back and defend and drop into midfield but aslo have the legs to get into attck - something Berba was never really good at.

One of the underrated (well, undermentioned) things about Berbatov is his hold up play. If we're under pressure and manage to hoof it up the pitch to him, you can pretty much count on him to control it, evade anyone coming to close him down and wait for support. In that way, he's actually an effective method of counterattacking. He might not be one to sprint upfield in support of a break, but he contributes in other ways.

I am very interested in seeing how the Berbatov vs Hernandez battle plays out, though. As you say, we do tend to play 4-4-2 against the weaker sides so there will be a spot next to Wayne available, you'd expect it to be Berbatov that gets the lions share, but, you can't help but feel that Hernandez is a natural goalscorer, and it'll start getting hard to drop him should he start scoring the more of the two. Very nice problem to have, though.

It looks like we will play 451 more this season, assuming we don't sign anyone else. Whether we play 442 or 451 is dependent on the midfield. Right now we don't have 2 centeral midfielders who are capable of playing alongside each other in the bigger games without getting run over. Using the 451 in these games gives us more control and possesion in the middle of the pitch and as we saw last season Rooney thrived playing up top alone and was effective in the role. Considering that, I see no reason why we should opt to play the 442 more against the better teams.
Yes it will mean less games for our strikekrs, but if it means getting the best out of Rooney who is our most important player, we should look to give him the service he needs.

I don't see why we would suddenly change the way we play that much. It's been proven effective over the years and with the number of strikers and wingers we have, we'll likely play the same amount of games give and take with the same tactics.

Unless Carrick/Anderson start playing reaaaallly well and SAF is ready to play Rooney in the hole then forget it.

In this case - definitely 'fewer'.

Gordon Bennett, I thought you might have used your downtime to cure that rampant pedantry.

Can't wait for his first league goal, how do you rate his chances of starting against Newcastle?

If he plays he'll surely have a decent chance at getting on the scoresheet.

I hope so anyway, i'll be at that one.

OUR SAVIOUR

He'll be a star for us, people compare him to Owen and hopefully at United we'll manage him better at this vital early stage of a striker in that mold than what happened to Michael. I see Hernandez grabbing 10-15 goals this season, depending on game time, he might even hit 20.

Anyone know a of a betting site which are doing players specials for the amount of goals a player scores in a season?

I want to put a bet on Hernandez scoring more then 25 goals.

Fantastic speed and running!

He seemed to play well with Berbatov too so that looks promising.

He scores in every game - even if he has to twat himself in the face to do it. What a player!
