I don't see the comparison at all tbh.

From what I've seen in pre-season and the Mexican friendlies in the WC, he's not a very calm and composed finisher at all (e.g. missed two great chances in the Chivas game) but he is very good at finishing when he doesn't have time to think (e.g. goals against united/argentina)

I think he'll be one of those players who'll miss his fair share of chances but it won't matter because his great movement means that he won't be long waiting for his next chance.

More of an Andy Cole than an Ole, if you will.

I haven't watched him much in the pre season games. I've seen his World Cup goals and the lob he scored against MLS all stars (?) and he looked fairly composed in those clips.

Cole is a good call though - with the movement and sharpness that you talk about.

Feck it - if he has the United career of either of them, it's happy days!

I think Hernandez will hit the target most of the time as well. And while Ole's rep is obviously based on his best form, best season, best showings for United there was a time when he wasnt finishing all that brilliantly next to Ruud in the 06/07 season. Thats a guess by the way, I dont know if it was that specific season but I remember him being first choice next to Ruud and missing lots of good chances in one of his seasons. He got 11 goals in 32 games in all comps that season so I'm thinking it was that season.

If Solskjaer, a player renown for his cool finishing, can blow cold with his finishing for a season or two then I dont see why one or two weak finishes in pre-season mean that Hernandez cant be a great finisher as he develops. The world cup goals, coming into the side and coming off the bench to score against France and Argentina are a better judge of his composure and finishing than pre-season matches. And he didnt miss much there. He took his chances very well.

I think this little character is going to be the signing you all hoped for, and the main reason Fergie hasn't splashed around lots of money.

Watch him tear defences apart next season.

One to watch.

Hey we are already a more than decent team. (c) SAF 2010 :smirk:

Couldn't have been, we didn't have Van Nistelrooy then. :)

Got to agree on this. He comes across as rushed at times and is best when everything is instinctive rather than when he has time to set himself and make a decision.

Have to say i'm not sure where people are getting this from but he seems like composure personified in front of goal to me. If people are refering to the friendlies he has played please try to remember he had the unusual pressure of settling into a new club.

There must be alot of nerves involved that won't be there once he settles and even then you see his perfomances and finish against MLS all stars and that was virtualy his first clear cut chance.

He strikes me as the type of player who if you game 10 clear cut chances to he would hit the back of the net around 8 times as I believe its not just his pace and movement but also his finishing that is top notch. Again you can see that with him cooly tucking away his first chance against France in the WC and his first clear cut chance against Argentina. Give him chances and he will score.

I really don't think him thinking too much is a problem he seems to me like a player who already makes up his mind what he's going to do when through on goal and then does it.

Looking really really good so far.

Be interesting to see if he starts the season.

Rooney Berbatov Owen Hernandez is looking to be a great foursome of strikers plus the young lads of course.

Looks a quality signing. His movement and pace around the area is going to be a real asset. I can see him starting a lot of games.

That crossfield pass he made was sensational.. there is alot more to him than meets the eye, very intelligent footballer with alot of purpose.

Can't wait to see him partnered with Rooney.

The guy looks quality (his movement and finishing has crossed my eye the most) but lets be honest it is just pre-season, i think the real test would be to see how he fairs against Chelsea in the CS.

His finishing isn't "forced".It looks so natural and easy

His finishing technique appears flawless, but its the vibe he gives.. very clinical, like a Ruud or Owen.

He looks so sharp and clinical right now.

If he carries this pre-season form in the games to come then he will be getting a lot of minutes. I can't wait to see how he handles better players. He should definitely be involved in the Community Shield against Chelsea.

Looks easily our most potent striker heading into the season which should see him get a few chances to show he can do it in competative matches too.

Has settled in well but will want to score when the real games start obviously and to be fair I think Nani and Valencia will be very productive creating chances, especially Valencia

At the end of the season and before the world cup there was a bit of a clamour for a top class striker and a few murmours that we'd gone for an unproven cut priced option.

And then he proved himself against top players at the world cup and showed why we had to buy him before the competition. And David Villa signed for Barcelona. So even if we did decide we suddenly had lots of money and needed to sign a top class striker, there wouldnt be any that are available and significantly better than what we have.

All Hernandez and Macheda need is experience and then they'll be fantastic options.

My thoughts from watching tonight were that we've got a bargain in Hernandez but are very very thin on the ground in the middle of the park.

Players who can play in the middle, excluding Hargreaves, are...

Anderson
Carrick
Cleverly
Gibson
Giggs
Fletcher
Park
Scholes

That doesn't look very very thin on the ground to me.

A good point made was Valencia can also play in the midfield. The post game discussion - the guys on MUTV discussed how he can slot in midfield and having done well for Ecuador there. It's a point often been discussed on the Caf.

Not that we'd want him to play out of position but, in case of injury and need, he can certainly slot in. Same goes with O'Shea as well.

Its another "on paper" argument. On paper, it may seem like we need another mid fielder, but that could be dispelled if one or two players step up this year.

Same with striker. Before the WC, most on here thought we needed another striker. A couple of Hernandez and Macheda goals later, the future looks bright.

Yeah exactly. I was thinking this.

Valencia in the middle, switch Nani over to the right and Park on the left. Would be pretty good imo.

park does well in the middle, but anyway
theres only one place i want hernandez...

bed!

Do this in community shield and he might be the real deal. He appears to be cool in front of goal, no anxiety at all.

Fair point, but our overeliance on Giggs and Scholes who, although still quality, is, I feel, slightly worrying. Looking at that list gives us very few options with the injury list.

Looking at the goal again makes me realise how difficult that sort of finish is, brilliant strike

I have been impressed with the range of goals he's scored so far. He's a threat outside the box, as well as inside.

Yeah, for someone who does remind us of Owen, he's actually lashed in a few well struck efforts from just outside the box, which Owen has never been particular impressive with. One against us and one again last night, for us. Both had good power and direction and were on target although neither screamed into the top corner either. If either one had of done it'd have been a golazo.

There's the left foot strike against us, and again against Argentina, rounding the keeper to the right against France, a volleyed chip on his debut for us, the near post finish last night... I believe he scored his first 5 goals for Mexico with his head... Had he have scored that bicycle against us he'd have completed the set already.
